Overview
The Traxxas Spur gear, 44-tooth (machined, hardened steel) (wide face) (1.0 metric pitch) TRX6438 is a precision-engineered transmission component designed for serious RC enthusiasts who demand maximum performance and durability from their models. Whether you're running a Traxxas Maxx Slash or another compatible RC vehicle, this replacement spur gear allows you to fine-tune your model's performance characteristics to suit different running conditions, terrains and driving styles. For anyone serious about RC car UK performance tuning, upgrading to a high-quality steel spur gear is one of the most effective ways to optimise acceleration, top speed and overall drivetrain reliability.
This 44-tooth spur gear represents the sweet spot for many RC short course truck and off-road bashers, offering a balanced gear ratio that works well across varied running conditions. Whether you're pushing your brushless RC vehicle to its limits on the track or enjoying weekend bashing sessions, having the right gearing makes all the difference. The Traxxas Spur gear TRX6438 is an essential spare part for any serious RC enthusiast, and its availability means you can maintain peak performance without downtime.
Traxxas has engineered this component to work seamlessly with their range of ready to run RC models, and the 44-tooth configuration provides an excellent compromise between raw acceleration and maximum velocity. Unlike cheaper plastic alternatives, this machined steel gear can handle the extreme stresses of high-powered brushless motors and demanding driving techniques, making it an investment in the longevity of your RC vehicle.
Key Features
- Machined Hardened Steel Construction — This spur gear is manufactured from hardened steel that has been precisely machined to exacting tolerances, ensuring consistent meshing with your pinion gear and dramatically extending the component's lifespan compared to plastic alternatives, which is critical when running brushless motors that generate enormous power.
- Wide-Face Steel Teeth — The extra-wide tooth face design distributes power more effectively across a larger contact surface, reducing stress concentration and wear patterns whilst providing ultimate power handling capability that keeps pace with modern high-KV brushless motors used in competition and recreational RC driving.
- 1.0 Metric Pitch — This industry-standard metric pitch specification ensures perfect compatibility with Traxxas pinion gears and drivetrain components, maintaining the precise spacing and engagement characteristics needed for smooth, efficient power transmission and minimal noise during operation.
- Performance Tuning Capability — By selecting the 44-tooth spur gear option, you unlock the ability to fine-tune your RC vehicle's characteristics, balancing acceleration against top speed to match your specific running conditions, whether you prefer low-end torque for technical terrain or higher velocities on open tracks.
- Genuine Traxxas Component — As an official Traxxas parts specification, this spur gear has been tested and validated to work seamlessly with compatible models, ensuring reliability and performance without the guesswork associated with third-party alternatives.
Technical Performance
The Traxxas 44-tooth spur gear TRX6438 represents a masterclass in precision engineering for RC drivetrain systems. Machined from hardened steel using CNC manufacturing processes, this component delivers the kind of durability that recreational and competitive RC drivers demand. The wide-face tooth profile is engineered to withstand the extreme torque loads generated by modern brushless motors, which can produce peak power levels several times higher than traditional brushed setups. The 1.0 metric pitch specification is fundamental to the Traxxas ecosystem, meaning this gear integrates perfectly with their entire range of pinion gears and transmission assemblies. The 44-tooth configuration places this gear in the mid-range of spur gear options, making it an excellent general-purpose choice that provides balanced performance for both acceleration and top speed. When paired with the correct pinion gear ratio, this spur gear enables precise performance tuning that can be adapted to suit everything from tight technical courses to high-speed speed runs. The hardened steel construction resists the wear, deformation and tooth stripping that plague plastic gears when subjected to the demands of serious RC driving, ensuring consistent performance over thousands of operating hours. For owners of Traxxas Maxx Slash short course trucks and other compatible models, this spur gear is an essential maintenance item that should be kept on hand as a spare, ensuring you're never sidelined by a damaged drivetrain component.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the 44-tooth spur gear ratio used for in RC vehicles? — The 44-tooth spur gear is a mid-range option that provides balanced performance characteristics. When paired with your pinion gear, it creates a gear ratio that offers a good compromise between acceleration and top speed. By changing from a different tooth count (such as a 50-tooth or 40-tooth alternative), you can adjust how your RC vehicle behaves: lower tooth counts accelerate faster but reach lower top speeds, whilst higher tooth counts do the opposite. The 44-tooth is particularly popular for general-purpose driving across varied terrain.
- Is this spur gear compatible with my Traxxas model? — This component is specifically designed for Traxxas models that use 1.0 metric pitch gears, including the Traxxas Maxx Slash short course truck in all colour variants. Always consult your vehicle's owner's manual to confirm compatibility and recommended gearing options before purchase. If you're uncertain whether this part fits your specific model, our expert team at RC Model Shop is happy to help verify compatibility.
- Why is hardened steel better than plastic gears? — Hardened steel gears offer several critical advantages over plastic alternatives. Steel gears resist tooth stripping, deformation and wear far more effectively, especially under the extreme loads generated by brushless motors. Plastic gears may work in low-powered applications but will eventually strip or crack when subjected to serious driving. Steel gears maintain their precise tooth profile over thousands of operating hours, ensuring consistent meshing and efficient power transmission. For anyone investing in a quality RC vehicle, upgrading to steel transmission components is one of the best reliability upgrades you can make.
- What does the wide-face tooth design do? — The extra-wide tooth face distributes the enormous power loads across a larger contact area, which reduces stress concentration on individual teeth. This design approach significantly improves durability and reduces wear patterns, allowing the gear to handle higher power levels and harsher driving conditions. The wider teeth also typically run quieter and smoother than narrower alternatives, creating a more refined driving experience.
- Can I change my RC vehicle's performance by swapping spur gears? — Yes, changing the spur gear tooth count is one of the most effective and economical ways to tune your RC vehicle's performance. The 44-tooth gear sits in the mid-range of available options. If you want more acceleration and quicker throttle response, you might choose a lower tooth count. If you want higher top speed capability, you might select a higher tooth count. Always ensure your motor and ESC are capable of handling the resulting changes in current draw and power demand.
- How often should I replace my spur gear? — Steel spur gears like this one typically last for thousands of operating hours under normal conditions. However, you should inspect your gear regularly for signs of damage such as stripped or chipped teeth, cracks, or visible wear. If you notice these issues, replacement becomes necessary. It's also wise to keep a spare on hand so you're never without your RC vehicle during maintenance.
