Technical Performance

The Futaba R3204SB represents the pinnacle of modern receiver engineering for RC aircraft applications, combining cutting-edge technology with proven reliability in a package so small and light that it virtually disappears once installed in your aircraft. The receiver's construction utilises premium-grade components throughout, with professional-quality PCB design and manufacturing standards that ensure consistent performance across temperature ranges and environmental conditions typical of RC aircraft operation. The T-FHSS Air protocol implemented in this receiver uses frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology, which provides both security and resistance to radio interference—critical features for RC aircraft UK pilots operating in busy RC flying sites where multiple aircraft may be airborne simultaneously. The dual diversity antenna system continuously monitors incoming signals, automatically selecting the strongest signal path to maintain uninterrupted control authority regardless of aircraft orientation or distance from the transmitter. With support for both PWM and S.BUS protocols, the R3204SB bridges traditional and modern RC aircraft designs seamlessly; operators can use the four dedicated PWM channels for elemental controls like aileron, elevator, rudder, and throttle, or step up to the full 18-channel S.BUS data stream for complex aircraft requiring simultaneous control of multiple servos through a single signal line. The receiver's ability to operate from input voltages between 3.5V and 8.4V, with nominal operation at 3.7-7.4V DC, makes it perfectly suited to single-cell lithium polymer batteries that have revolutionised RC aircraft performance. This wide voltage tolerance ensures stable operation whether you're starting a flight with a freshly charged 1S LiPo at 4.2V or nearing the end of the flight cycle as battery voltage gradually decreases. The 4.8-gram weight specification is achieved through careful engineering and material selection, ensuring that every component serves a critical purpose without unnecessary bulk. For RC aircraft enthusiasts seeking professional-grade receiver technology in the smallest, lightest package available, the R3204SB delivers uncompromising performance backed by Futaba's reputation for excellence in RC radio control systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Futaba R3204SB suitable for beginner RC aircraft pilots? — The R3204SB is designed primarily for intermediate to advanced RC aircraft pilots who appreciate the advanced features, compact size, and telemetry capabilities this receiver offers. Beginner pilots typically benefit from larger, more robust receivers with more straightforward installation requirements. However, if you're an experienced fixed-wing aircraft pilot upgrading your RC aircraft equipment or a drone enthusiast familiar with compact electronics, the R3204SB would be an excellent choice. The receiver's reliability and Futaba's comprehensive documentation support pilots at various skill levels once they understand basic RC systems.
  • What battery does the Futaba R3204SB need? — The R3204SB is designed specifically for 1S LiPo (single-cell lithium polymer) batteries, operating optimally between 3.7V and 7.4V DC nominal voltage. In practical terms, this means you'll power the receiver from lightweight 1S LiPo batteries that have become standard in modern RC aircraft due to their exceptional power-to-weight ratio. The receiver's input voltage tolerance of 3.5-8.4V provides flexibility across the typical discharge curve of a 1S LiPo battery from full charge through to safe minimum discharge levels. Always ensure your battery management system includes proper low-voltage cutoff protection to prevent over-discharging your 1S LiPo, which can permanently damage the battery cells.
  • What is the difference between the four PWM channels and 18-channel S.BUS capability? — The R3204SB provides four traditional PWM (pulse-width modulation) channels, which are the standard control method for individual servos in RC aircraft. Each PWM channel sends a separate signal to one servo, so you can directly control four servos using the four PWM outputs. Additionally, the receiver supports S.BUS protocol, a digital data stream that can carry up to 18 individual servo signals down a single data wire to a compatible S.BUS servo controller or flight computer. This flexibility means you can use traditional RC aircraft with basic four-servo setups using PWM, or upgrade to complex modern aircraft with multiple control surfaces using the S.BUS capability without needing a larger receiver.
  • How does the dual diversity antenna system improve RC aircraft performance? — The dual diversity antenna system continuously monitors signals arriving at both antennas simultaneously, automatically selecting whichever antenna is receiving the strongest signal at any given moment. This switching happens many times per second, ensuring that your aircraft always receives the strongest possible control signal regardless of aircraft orientation, distance, or environmental radio interference. In practical flying conditions, especially at distance or in areas with metallic structures or radio noise sources, this dual diversity arrangement provides noticeably improved range and control signal reliability compared to single-antenna receivers.
  • Is the R3204SB waterproof or weather-resistant? — The R3204SB is not explicitly rated as waterproof in Futaba's specifications, so it should be treated as standard electronics that require protection from water and moisture. Typical installation practice in aircraft models includes mounting the receiver in a protective box or tube within the fuselage, naturally sheltering it from rain and condensation. For outdoor flying operations, ensure your aircraft is not left exposed to water when not in use, and store the receiver in a dry environment.
  • Can I use the R3204SB with transmitters other than Futaba? — The R3204SB is specifically designed for operation with Futaba T-FHSS Air transmitters that support this receiver's protocol and Link ID pairing system. It is not compatible with transmitters from other manufacturers such as Spektrum, JR, or other brands. Always verify that your Futaba transmitter supports the R3204SB receiver before purchasing to ensure full compatibility and access to all telemetry and advanced features.
  • What is the shipping weight and dimension specification? — The receiver itself weighs 4.8 grams and measures 41.4 x 18 x 9.9 millimetres, making it extraordinarily compact and lightweight for space-restricted aircraft installations. The shipping weight for the packaged receiver is 0.05 kilograms (approximately 50 grams), which includes the protective packaging and antenna assembly.
