Overview

The Futaba R202GF is a compact 2-channel surface receiver that brings dependable radio control to your RC cars, boats and other surface models. This lightweight, straightforward receiver is designed for hobbyists who want reliable 2.4GHz control without unnecessary complexity. Weighing just 6 grams, it's an ideal solution for RC enthusiasts looking for a proven, no-nonsense receiver that integrates seamlessly with Futaba's S-FHSS or FHSS transmission systems. Whether you're piloting an RC car UK enthusiasts trust or exploring surface RC for the first time, the R202GF delivers the performance you need in a package that won't weigh down your model.

Built by Futaba, the world's leading RC radio control manufacturer since 1962, the R202GF benefits from decades of expertise in frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology. This surface-specific receiver is engineered for straightforward installation and operation, making it an excellent choice for anyone seeking a reliable ready-to-run RC setup or upgrading an existing vehicle. The combination of simplicity and Futaba's renowned build quality means you can focus on the fun rather than worrying about your radio equipment.

The R202GF is particularly suited to RC car UK buyers, RC boat enthusiasts, and anyone else piloting surface vehicles who values reliability and ease of use. Its single external aerial makes installation straightforward, whilst its compact dimensions ensure it fits neatly into tight spaces within your model. With proper pairing to a compatible Futaba transmitter, this receiver provides the stable, interference-free control that Futaba systems are famous for.

Key Features

  • 2-Channel PWM Control — This receiver provides two independent channels of control, allowing you to operate throttle and steering simultaneously with smooth, responsive PWM signal processing that translates your transmitter inputs into precise model movement.
  • Futaba S-FHSS or FHSS Compatibility — Works seamlessly with Futaba's advanced spread spectrum radio protocols, which automatically hop across multiple frequencies to provide rock-solid signal stability and immunity from interference, a technology trusted by RC enthusiasts worldwide.
  • 2.4GHz Digital Control — Operating on the 2.4GHz frequency band used by modern RC equipment ensures your surface model responds instantly and reliably to your transmitter commands without lag or dropouts.
  • Simple Bind Button — The one-touch bind function makes pairing your receiver with a compatible Futaba transmitter quick and straightforward, so you can get on the water or track in minutes rather than hours.
  • Status LED Indicator — A helpful LED provides visual feedback about the receiver's operating status, letting you know at a glance whether the unit is powered, searching for signal, or bound and ready to control your model.
  • Single External Aerial — The external antenna design allows for optimal signal reception and easy installation in virtually any model layout, eliminating the need for complex routing or hidden antenna placement.
  • Ultra-Lightweight Design — At just 6 grams, the R202GF adds negligible weight to your RC car, boat or surface vehicle, meaning your model's performance and handling are virtually unaffected by the radio equipment.
  • 4.8–7.4V Battery Support — The receiver accepts power from the spare battery port and supports a wide voltage range, allowing you to power it with standard 2S LiPo batteries or traditional NiMH packs without additional regulators.
  • Compact Dimensions — Measuring just 35.1 × 23 × 8.5mm, the R202GF fits into confined spaces within your model's chassis, making it ideal for cars, boats and other compact surface vehicles where space is at a premium.

Technical Performance

The Futaba R202GF represents the engineering excellence Futaba has built its reputation on since the 1960s. This receiver operates on 2.4GHz using Futaba's proprietary S-FHSS (Surface Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) or FHSS protocols, technologies specifically designed for surface RC applications. The PWM signal processing ensures smooth, linear control response across both channels, critical for precise steering and throttle modulation in RC cars and boats. The receiver's compact form factor at just 35.1mm long and 23mm wide means it integrates easily into modern RC designs without compromising vehicle performance or balance. The ultra-lightweight 5.9 gram specification (manufacturer spec) or 6 gram (alternative measurement) ensures weight distribution in your model remains optimal. Construction quality is consistent with Futaba's reputation for durability, featuring a robust PCB design that can handle the vibration and environmental conditions associated with surface RC use. The voltage tolerance of 4.8–7.4V provides flexibility in power source selection; users can employ either 2S lithium polymer batteries or traditional nickel-metal hydride packs via the dedicated spare battery port connector. Signal stability is paramount, and the R202GF's use of Futaba's frequency-hopping technology delivers interference-free operation in crowded RC environments. The single external aerial captures signal effectively whilst remaining robust enough to handle the minor impacts and vibrations inherent in RC model operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Futaba R202GF suitable for beginners new to RC cars and boats? — Yes, absolutely. The R202GF is specifically designed for straightforward operation. The one-touch bind button makes pairing with a compatible Futaba transmitter simple, whilst the status LED provides clear visual feedback. If you already own a Futaba S-FHSS or FHSS transmitter, this receiver requires minimal setup knowledge and is an excellent choice for beginners exploring surface RC vehicles.
  • What battery does the Futaba R202GF need and how do I connect it? — The receiver accepts power between 4.8 and 7.4 volts via the spare battery port, which uses a standard receiver connector. You can use either a 2S lithium polymer (LiPo) battery or traditional 2S nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) pack. Many RC car UK and boat builders use 2S LiPo packs for their excellent power-to-weight ratio and performance characteristics.
  • Is the R202GF compatible with my Futaba transmitter? — The R202GF works with Futaba transmitters that support S-FHSS (Surface Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) or FHSS protocols. It is not compatible with all Futaba transmitters—for example, it will not work with the T6EX. Check your transmitter's manual or contact our team to confirm compatibility before purchasing. Models like the T4YF and 3PV have been confirmed compatible by users.
  • Can I bind two R202GF receivers to one Futaba transmitter for controlling multiple models? — Yes, if your Futaba transmitter has model memory. You can bind each receiver as a separate model in your transmitter's memory, allowing you to switch between controlling different RC cars or boats without needing to rebind. This is particularly useful if you have multiple surface vehicles in your collection.
  • Can I use the R202GF receiver's battery port to power additional equipment like a transponder? — Yes, provided the additional equipment uses a standard receiver plug connector and operates within the receiver's 4.8–7.4V tolerance range, you can power it through the spare battery port. This is useful for powering lap timing systems, telemetry units or other auxiliary equipment.
  • What does the status LED indicate on the R202GF? — The LED provides visual status feedback. During normal operation when the receiver is bound and receiving a strong signal, the LED will indicate this status. If the receiver is searching for signal or experiencing issues, the LED will display this differently. Always refer to the manual for specific LED status codes.
  • How do I bind the R202GF to my Futaba transmitter? — The receiver features a simple bind button on the unit itself. Press and hold the bind button whilst powering on the receiver, then activate binding mode on your Futaba transmitter. Once successfully bound, the receiver will retain the pairing even after power-down, and you only need to rebind if you want to pair it with a different transmitter.
  • Is the R202GF waterproof for use in RC boats? — The receiver is designed for surface RC use including boats, however you should protect the receiver and connectors from direct water immersion. Consider housing the receiver in a waterproof box or using protective covering whilst maintaining aerial exposure. The external antenna should remain accessible for optimal signal reception.
