Whether you're a seasoned RC competitor, a weekend basher customising your own RC car, or exploring the world of RC for the first time, the SBD-1 provides a straightforward and affordable solution to a common RC setup challenge.
RC enthusiasts across the UK trust Futaba products for their reliability and precision. The SBD-1 works seamlessly with both S.BUS and S.BUS2 systems, giving you flexibility in choosing your receiver platform without worrying about servo compatibility. At just £35.99, this decoder lead represents excellent value for anyone building or upgrading their RC vehicle with S.BUS technology.
Key Features
- 3-port S.BUS to PWM converter — The SBD-1 translates S.BUS protocol signals from your receiver into standard PWM (pulse width modulation) signals that conventional servos understand, allowing you to use any standard servo with S.BUS receivers without expensive upgrades or replacements.
- Compatible with S.BUS and S.BUS2 systems — This decoder works with both S.BUS and the newer S.BUS2 protocol, giving you maximum compatibility whether you're using established Futaba receivers or upgrading to the latest S.BUS2 technology, ensuring your investment remains relevant as RC systems evolve.
- Three independent PWM outputs — The decoder provides three separate servo channels, perfect for controlling three different servos independently, whether you're powering steering, throttle and auxiliary functions on an RC car, or controlling multiple functions on a crawler or truck.
- 200mm lead length — The 200mm cable length is optimised for clean, compact installations, allowing you to keep your RC wiring tidy and organised without excess cable loops that can cause interference or create clutter inside your RC vehicle chassis.
- Wide operating voltage range (4.8–7.4V) — The SBD-1 operates safely across a broad voltage range, making it compatible with both two-cell (2S) and three-cell (3S) LiPo batteries as well as NiMH battery systems, providing maximum flexibility in power source selection for your RC build.
- Lightweight and compact design — Weighing just 0.02kg, the SBD-1 adds minimal weight to your RC vehicle, which is critical for maintaining performance and responsiveness, particularly in racing or precision-driving applications where every gram matters.
- Designed by Futaba, the trusted name in RC since 1948 — With over 70 years of radio control expertise, Futaba's engineering excellence ensures the SBD-1 delivers reliable signal conversion and servo control without dropouts, interference or signal degradation.
Technical Performance
The Futaba SBD-1 represents solid engineering focused on solving a real-world problem in RC builds. At its core, this device is a high-quality signal converter that takes the digital S.BUS protocol from your receiver and outputs clean PWM signals for up to three servos simultaneously. The 4.8–7.4V operating voltage range means you can power the decoder directly from your RC vehicle's main battery system, whether that's a 2S or 3S LiPo pack commonly used in modern RC cars, buggies and trucks, or traditional NiMH batteries. The three PWM output channels are independent and fully isolated from each other, preventing signal interference between channels and ensuring smooth, responsive servo operation across all three channels simultaneously. The 200mm lead length is professionally engineered to be practical rather than excessive—long enough to reach servo connections away from the receiver location, but short enough to keep installations neat and compact. Built with the same attention to detail that Futaba applies to their professional-grade RC transmitters and receivers, the SBD-1 features quality solder joints, shielded connections where necessary, and robust connectors designed to survive the vibration and shock typical of RC racing and bashing environments. The black anodised finish provides durability and professional appearance whilst protecting against environmental damage.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use the SBD-1 with my existing conventional servos? — Yes, this is exactly what the SBD-1 is designed for. If you have standard PWM servos (non-S.BUS servos) and you've upgraded to an S.BUS receiver, the SBD-1 converts the S.BUS signal from your receiver into standard PWM signals that any conventional servo will understand and respond to, allowing you to reuse your existing servo collection without replacement.
- Does the SBD-1 work with both S.BUS and S.BUS2 receivers? — Absolutely. The SBD-1 is compatible with both S.BUS and S.BUS2 protocol receivers, which means you can use it with established Futaba S.BUS systems or upgrade to newer S.BUS2 technology without needing to replace the decoder, protecting your investment as receiver technology evolves.
- What voltage does the SBD-1 require? — The SBD-1 operates from 4.8 to 7.4 volts, which covers both 2S LiPo batteries (7.4V nominal) and 3S LiPo batteries (11.1V nominal when first charged, dropping to around 9V under load, though 3S operation may exceed the upper voltage limit), as well as standard 5-cell (6.0V) and 6-cell (7.2V) NiMH battery packs commonly used in RC cars and trucks across the UK.
- How many servos can the SBD-1 control? — The SBD-1 provides three independent PWM output ports, meaning it can control up to three servos simultaneously with independent control signals, perfect for steering, throttle and auxiliary servo functions on an RC car, or multiple functions on larger RC vehicles.
- Is the SBD-1 suitable for beginners? — Yes, the SBD-1 is well-suited to beginners because it solves a specific compatibility problem with straightforward, plug-and-play functionality. If you're building your first S.BUS based RC car or truck and you already own conventional servos, this decoder lead eliminates the need to purchase expensive S.BUS compatible servos, saving money whilst allowing you to learn RC building and operation.
- Will the 200mm lead length be long enough for my RC car? — The 200mm lead is quite practical for most RC vehicle installations. It's long enough to route from a centrally-mounted receiver to servo connection points on a typical RC car or truck chassis, and short enough to keep wiring tidy and prevent cable tangling or interference. If you need a longer connection, you can extend PWM servo leads, but the main decoder lead is optimally sized for clean installations.
- Can I use the SBD-1 with a nitro RC engine or only electric RC cars? — The SBD-1 is purely a signal converter for servos and is completely independent of your power source, so it works equally well with nitro RC vehicles, electric RC cars and trucks, or any other RC platform using S.BUS receivers with conventional servos. The 4.8–7.4V operating range makes it suitable for battery-powered systems.
