Overview
The Traxxas Shocks, GTX, medium (aluminium, Blue-anodised) (TRX7861) represent a premium suspension upgrade for serious RC enthusiasts in the UK looking to significantly improve their vehicle's handling and performance. These are huge oil-filled aluminium shock absorbers designed specifically to tame the toughest terrain with exceptional damping characteristics. Whether you're running an XRT™ on challenging off-road tracks or demanding backyard courses, these GTX medium shocks deliver the refined suspension control that separates competitive RC car setups from casual bashers. Built from high-quality aluminium construction and finished in a striking blue anodised coating, these shocks combine performance engineering with eye-catching aesthetics that will make your RC model stand out.
If you're serious about getting the best handling from your ready to run RC truck or upgrading an existing model, these GTX shocks are a game-changer. RC enthusiasts across the UK know that suspension quality directly impacts cornering speed, stability over jumps, and overall driving confidence. The fully assembled design means you can get them fitted quickly without complicated assembly work, though it's worth noting that springs and shock oil are sold separately. This gives you the flexibility to fine-tune your setup with the exact spring rates and damping fluids that match your driving style and terrain preferences.
These shocks come sold as a pair, making them a direct replacement option for compatible Traxxas XRT models. The investment in quality suspension components like these GTX shocks is one of the smartest upgrades any RC car owner can make, transforming how your vehicle responds to bumps, brakes, and aggressive cornering. At RC Model Shop, we stock Traxxas suspension components because we know serious hobbyists demand reliability and performance from every component on their RC vehicles.
Key Features
- Oil-filled aluminium shock bodies — The use of high-quality aluminium construction combined with internal oil damping provides superior vibration absorption and consistent performance across a wide range of terrain types, ensuring your RC vehicle maintains traction and stability even on the roughest surfaces.
- Silky-smooth damping performance — The carefully engineered internal piston and oil combination creates progressive damping that smooths out impacts without feeling mushy, giving you confidence when pushing your RC model to its limits on technical courses.
- Threaded shock bodies for ride height adjustment — The aluminium bodies feature threading that allows you to adjust ride height easily using the spring retaining collar, enabling you to fine-tune your vehicle's geometry for optimal performance on different track layouts or terrain types without requiring special tools.
- Bright blue anodised finish — Beyond just looking stunning, the anodised coating provides genuine protective benefits, resisting corrosion and maintaining the shocks' appearance run after run, keeping your RC investment looking fresh and professional.
- Medium-length design — The GTX medium profile is engineered specifically to balance suspension travel with chassis clearance, making them ideal for vehicles like the XRT that demand a sweet spot between articulation and stability.
- Fully assembled construction — These shocks arrive completely assembled and ready to install, saving you hours of bench work and ensuring professional-quality assembly every time.
- Sold as a matching pair — You receive two identical shocks, ensuring consistent performance across your vehicle's suspension and maintaining even handling characteristics left to right.
Technical Performance
The GTX medium shocks represent Traxxas's engineering expertise in suspension design for high-performance RC vehicles. The aluminium construction offers an excellent balance between weight and rigidity, ensuring the shocks maintain consistent geometry under the extreme forces generated during acceleration, braking, and cornering in competitive RC racing. The oil-filling system is crucial to these shocks' performance—the carefully selected damping oil works in conjunction with the precision-engineered piston to create progressive damping characteristics that respond instantly to terrain changes. This means small bumps are absorbed smoothly without affecting overall vehicle control, whilst large impacts are handled with sufficient resistance to prevent bottoming out. The threaded design of the shock bodies adds genuine functionality beyond aesthetics; it allows adjustable ride height without requiring disassembly, giving you the ability to adapt your vehicle's stance for different tracks, conditions, or driving preferences. These shocks are fully assembled and tested at the factory, meaning they meet Traxxas's exacting quality standards before shipping. They are engineered as replacement components for the Traxxas XRT family, including the XRT VXL-8S in Blue, Orange, Green, and Black variants, as well as the XRT Ultimate models in Blue X and Green X finishes. The medium length designation indicates these shocks are optimised for vehicles requiring moderate suspension travel, striking the perfect balance for aggressive off-road driving whilst maintaining adequate clearance for rock crawling and technical terrain. Performance-focused RC car owners in the UK value these shocks because they directly contribute to faster lap times, better jump landing control, and increased overall vehicle confidence during demanding driving sessions.
What's in the Box
- Two fully assembled GTX medium shocks with blue anodised aluminium bodies
- Spring retaining collars for ride height adjustment
What You Need to Complete
- Shock springs (sold separately) — These are essential for the shocks to function and must be selected based on your weight, driving style, and terrain preferences
- Shock oil (sold separately) — High-quality damping fluid is required to fill the shocks and must match Traxxas specifications for optimal performance
Frequently Asked Questions
- Are these GTX shocks suitable for beginner RC enthusiasts? — Whilst these shocks represent premium suspension engineering, they're most suitable for intermediate to advanced RC drivers who understand suspension tuning and have the knowledge to select appropriate springs and oils. Beginners should start with vehicles that come with shocks and springs pre-assembled, then upgrade to these GTX shocks once they understand their vehicle's suspension geometry and how to adjust it.
- What makes GTX shocks different from standard shocks on ready to run RC models? — GTX shocks feature larger aluminium bodies, superior internal engineering, and oil-filling systems that provide significantly smoother damping and more adjustability than the plastic shocks typically found on budget ready to run RC vehicles. This means faster response times, better terrain absorption, and greater tuning flexibility for serious hobbyists.
- Which RC models are these shocks compatible with? — These GTX medium shocks are engineered as direct replacements for the Traxxas XRT family, specifically the XRT VXL-8S in all colour variants (Blue, Orange, Green, Black) and the XRT Ultimate (Blue X and Green X). Check your vehicle's documentation to confirm compatibility before purchasing.
- Do I need to replace the springs when fitting these shocks? — Springs are sold separately and will depend on your setup preferences. If you're upgrading from standard shocks to these GTX units, you may want to invest in quality replacement springs that are specifically designed for medium-length shocks and match your vehicle's weight and driving style.
- What type of shock oil should I use? — Traxxas sells shock oil in various viscosity ratings (typically measured in cSt), and the correct choice depends on your terrain, temperature conditions, and desired suspension stiffness. Consult Traxxas documentation or speak with experienced UK RC retailers for guidance on oil selection for your specific application.
- Can I adjust the ride height myself? — Yes, one of the key advantages of these GTX shocks is the threaded body design that allows ride height adjustment using the spring retaining collar. This enables you to modify your vehicle's stance without disassembling the shocks, making setup changes quick and straightforward.
- How do these compare to other premium shock options available in the UK? — The GTX range from Traxxas is recognised across the world as premium suspension engineering, offering exceptional damping smoothness and proven reliability from a brand that sponsors professional RC racing teams. The blue anodised finish is also distinctly high-impact compared to many competitors' black or silver alternatives.
