Overview

The Traxxas Spur Gear 54-tooth steel (wide face, 1.0 metric pitch) TRX6444 is an essential transmission upgrade component for serious RC enthusiasts in the UK who demand maximum durability and power handling from their models. This precision-engineered spur gear represents the finest in aftermarket RC transmission parts, designed to give you complete control over your vehicle's performance characteristics. Whether you're running a Traxxas Maxx Slash short course truck, a WideMaxx monster truck, or an X-Maxx or XRT brushless platform, this 54-tooth gear delivers the reliability and strength needed for competitive racing, weekend bashing, or trail running across challenging British terrain.

Traxxas spur gears are renowned throughout the RC car community for their precision manufacturing and superior material quality. The 54-tooth configuration allows you to fine-tune your RC model's acceleration and top speed balance, making it possible to optimise your setup for different running conditions—whether that's high-speed circuit racing on tarmac or technical off-road courses with obstacles and elevation changes. By choosing the right gear ratio, you can unlock your model's full potential and enjoy significantly improved performance in whatever discipline you favour.

This particular gear is machined from solid hardened steel, which means it undergoes a special heat treatment process to dramatically increase its strength and longevity compared to standard plastic alternatives. The wide face design distributes loads across a larger contact area, reducing wear and extending the operational life of your transmission system. For RC enthusiasts across the UK looking for a genuine Traxxas component that will last through countless hours of high-performance driving, this is an investment worth making.

Key Features

  • Machined Hardened Steel Construction — This spur gear is manufactured from solid steel that has been hardened through a specialised heat treatment process, which significantly increases its resistance to wear, deformation, and breakage compared to standard plastic gears found on budget RC vehicles. Hardened steel maintains its shape and tooth profile even under extreme loads, ensuring consistent power delivery lap after lap.
  • Wide Face Profile — The extra-wide steel teeth span a greater width across the gear face, which distributes the engine's power and torque load across a much larger contact area. This design innovation dramatically reduces stress concentration on individual teeth, preventing catastrophic tooth stripping failures that commonly occur with narrow-profile gears during aggressive acceleration or high-speed cornering.
  • 1.0 Metric Pitch Standard — This gear uses the industry-standard 1.0 metric pitch specification, ensuring perfect compatibility with Traxxas's precision-manufactured pinion and differential components. The metric pitch standard means the tooth spacing is precisely calculated for maximum meshing efficiency and smooth power transfer throughout your acceleration range.
  • Ultimate Power Handling Capacity — The combination of hardened steel material, wide tooth profile, and precision manufacturing makes this gear capable of handling the extreme power outputs of modern brushless motors whilst maintaining reliability. Whether you're running a high-KV brushless system pushing maximum RPM or a heavily geared low-KV competition setup, this gear will manage the loads without compromise.
  • Fine-Tune Performance Capability — By installing this 54-tooth spur gear alongside different pinion gear ratios, you can precisely adjust your model's performance characteristics to suit specific driving conditions and racing requirements. This level of tuning control is essential for UK RC competitors who need their setups optimised for local track conditions.
  • Exceptional Durability and Longevity — The hardened steel composition and precision manufacturing mean this gear will outlast multiple plastic alternatives, providing excellent value for money over the long term and reducing your overall maintenance costs for replacement components.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas TRX6444 54-tooth spur gear represents professional-grade transmission engineering designed to handle the demands of high-performance RC driving. Machined from hardened steel rather than injection-moulded plastic, this component undergoes rigorous quality control to ensure consistent tooth profiles and precise pitch specifications that interface perfectly with Traxxas pinion gears and differential assemblies. The wide face design is the key to this gear's exceptional performance durability—by spreading the load across a significantly larger contact area than standard gears, it reduces tooth stress concentration and prevents the premature wear and stripping failures that plague cheaper alternatives. The 1.0 metric pitch specification is universal across Traxxas transmission systems, meaning this gear is compatible with a comprehensive range of Traxxas models currently available in the UK market. The hardening process applied to the steel dramatically increases surface hardness whilst maintaining internal toughness, creating a gear that resists both surface abrasion and tooth deflection under load. Whether paired with a low-KV brushless motor for maximum torque delivery or a high-KV setup optimised for speed, this gear maintains consistent performance without slip or tooth chatter. The precision manufacturing tolerances ensure that mesh clearance with your pinion gear remains optimal, eliminating noise and inefficiency whilst maximising power transmission efficiency to the wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which Traxxas models is the TRX6444 54-tooth spur gear compatible with? — This gear is engineered to work with a wide range of Traxxas models including the Maxx Slash 1/8 4WD 6S brushless short course truck (available in red, green, rock and roll, and blue variants), the WideMaxx monster truck (red, green, and rock and roll versions), the X-Maxx Ultimate and X-Maxx Belted brushless monster truck platforms (in multiple colour options including green, blue, orange, and red), and the XRT VXL-8S and XRT Ultimate rock crawler variants. Please consult your specific model's owner's manual to confirm compatibility and recommended gear ratios for your particular vehicle.
  • How does changing the spur gear affect my RC model's performance? — The spur gear ratio directly determines the balance between acceleration and top speed in your RC vehicle. A higher tooth count (like this 54-tooth version) provides more acceleration and torque but reduces maximum top speed, making it ideal for technical courses, heavy loads, or conditions requiring responsive handling. Lower tooth count gears favour raw speed. By selecting the appropriate gear ratio and pairing it with the correct pinion gear, you can optimise your model's performance for your specific driving conditions, track layout, and personal driving style.
  • Why should I upgrade from plastic gears to hardened steel? — Hardened steel gears offer dramatically superior durability and longevity compared to injection-moulded plastic alternatives. The hardening process increases surface hardness, which resists tooth wear and abrasion that accumulates during high-speed operation. Steel gears maintain their tooth profile shape indefinitely under normal conditions, whereas plastic gears gradually strip and degrade, causing inefficiency and eventual failure. For serious RC enthusiasts in the UK who invest in high-performance brushless systems, steel gears are essential to prevent power loss and maintain consistent performance throughout the life of your model.
  • What is the benefit of a wide face gear design? — The wide face profile distributes your motor's torque and power across a significantly larger tooth contact area compared to standard narrow-profile gears. This means individual gear teeth experience less stress and wear per revolution, dramatically extending the operational life of your transmission. Wide face gears also produce smoother, quieter operation because the load is distributed rather than concentrated on a few teeth, and they're far less prone to catastrophic tooth stripping failures during aggressive acceleration or high-power situations.
  • Is this gear suitable for brushless motor setups? — Yes, absolutely. This hardened steel wide-face gear is engineered specifically to handle the extreme power outputs of modern brushless motor systems. Whether you're running a 3S, 4S, 6S, or 8S brushless setup, this gear's material composition and design are rated for the high-torque loads that brushless motors produce. It's an ideal upgrade for anyone running a brushless Traxxas model who wants to maximise reliability and performance.
  • How do I know which spur gear size I need for my model? — The appropriate spur gear size depends on your specific model, the pinion gear you're using, and your performance goals. Traxxas provides detailed guidance in each model's owner's manual regarding recommended gear ratios for different driving conditions. Generally, you'll match a spur gear with a specific pinion gear to achieve your desired ratio. Our team at RC Model Shop can provide personalised recommendations based on your model and driving style if you get in touch.
