Key Features
- 2-Amp Fast Charging — This charger delivers 2 amps of charging current, which is significantly faster than standard 1-amp chargers, meaning your batteries reach full charge in less time and you can get back to the track or bashing field sooner. For RC car UK users who want to maximise track time, faster charging translates directly to more driving sessions per day.
- Peak-Detection Circuitry — Advanced peak-detection technology monitors your battery throughout the entire charging cycle and automatically stops charging the moment your battery reaches full capacity. This intelligent system prevents overcharging, which extends battery lifespan dramatically, saves you money on replacement batteries, and ensures consistent peak performance on every charge.
- 12-Volt DC Power Outlet Compatible — The charger connects to any standard 12-volt DC power outlet, making it universally compatible with workshop power supplies, automotive cigarette lighters, portable power stations, and dedicated RC pit power supplies. This flexibility means you can charge at home, in your van, at the track, or anywhere else you have access to 12V DC power.
- Molex Connector Design — The industry-standard Molex connector provides a robust, secure electrical connection that resists accidental disconnection and delivers consistent power transfer without voltage drops. This connector type is widely recognised across the RC hobby and ensures compatibility with genuine Traxxas batteries.
- 5 to 6-Cell NiMH Battery Optimisation — This charger is purpose-built for 5-cell and 6-cell Traxxas Power Cell NiMH batteries, delivering precisely the right voltage range of 6.0 to 7.2 volts. The charger's circuitry is calibrated specifically for these battery configurations, ensuring optimal charge rates and battery health.
- Status LED Indicator System — The integrated status LED provides real-time visual feedback throughout the charging process. A flashing green light indicates active charging, whilst a solid green light confirms complete charge. This foolproof system eliminates ambiguity and ensures you never remove a partially charged battery by accident.
- NiMH-Only Design — This charger is engineered exclusively for NiMH batteries, with internal protections and charging profiles specifically tuned for nickel-metal hydride chemistry. This specialised design ensures maximum safety and performance for NiMH users and protects your batteries from incompatible charging protocols.
- EZ-Start System Compatibility — The charger is purpose-designed for vehicles running Traxxas EZ-Start systems, which are commonly found on nitro-powered RC vehicles. If you run an EZ-Start nitro car, this charger delivers the exact charging characteristics those systems demand.
Technical Performance
The Traxxas Charger TRX2977 is engineered with professional-grade charging circuitry that delivers superior performance compared to budget chargers. The 2-amp charging rate is a significant advantage over standard 1-amp chargers, reducing charge time by approximately 50% and enabling you to complete more charging cycles throughout a day of racing or recreational bashing. The peak-detection circuitry operates by continuously monitoring battery voltage throughout the charging cycle; as NiMH batteries charge, voltage rises steadily, but the rate of voltage increase slows dramatically as the battery approaches full charge. When the voltage increase rate reaches its minimum point (the peak), the charger detects this change and stops charging immediately, preventing the overcharging that damages batteries and reduces lifespan. This technology is recognised as the gold standard in intelligent charging and is used by professional RC teams and competition drivers worldwide. The 12-volt DC power input is the standard for pit-side charging setups across the UK RC community, allowing you to use the same power infrastructure for multiple chargers and accessories. The Molex connector is constructed from durable plastic and high-quality gold-plated copper contacts that resist corrosion and provide years of reliable service. The housing is designed to dissipate heat efficiently, preventing thermal damage to internal components during extended charging sessions. Build quality throughout is consistent with Traxxas's reputation for durability and reliability in RC products.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this charger suitable for beginners to the RC hobby? — Yes, absolutely. The Traxxas Charger is specifically designed for user-friendly operation—simply plug in your battery and watch the LED indicator. The foolproof status light system means beginners cannot accidentally overcharge their batteries, making this an excellent first charger for anyone new to NiMH battery management. The peak-detection circuitry does all the thinking for you, eliminating guesswork.
- What batteries does this charger work with? — This charger is optimised exclusively for Traxxas Power Cell NiMH batteries in 5-cell (6.0-volt) and 6-cell (7.2-volt) configurations. These batteries are commonly found in Traxxas EZ-Start nitro vehicles, including popular models like the Traxxas Nitro Slash, Nitro Rustler, and Nitro Sport. Never attempt to charge LiPo (lithium polymer) batteries with this NiMH-only charger, as doing so can result in fire, explosion, or severe battery damage.
- How fast does the 2-amp charger really charge compared to standard chargers? — A 2-amp charger charges approximately twice as fast as a standard 1-amp charger. For example, a typical 5-cell NiMH battery (around 5000 mAh capacity) would charge in roughly 2.5 hours at 2 amps, compared to 5 hours at 1 amp. This speed advantage means you can complete more charging cycles throughout your day and spend more time driving your RC cars.
- Why can't I use this charger with LiPo batteries? — NiMH and LiPo batteries have completely different charging characteristics. NiMH batteries charge at a steady rate until peak voltage detection stops the charge, whereas LiPo batteries require careful constant-current, constant-voltage (CC-CV) charging with strict cell-count matching. Attempting to charge a LiPo battery with an NiMH charger will overcharge the battery, causing internal damage, swelling, and potentially catastrophic fire. Always match your battery chemistry to the correct charger type.
- What does the LED indicator tell me? — The status LED provides clear visual feedback: a flashing green light indicates charging is actively in progress, whilst a solid green light means charging is complete and your battery has reached full capacity. This simple colour-coded system makes charging foolproof—if the light is flashing green, leave the battery plugged in; if the light is solid green, your battery is ready to use and should be removed from the charger.
- Is the Molex connector the industry standard for RC chargers? — Yes, Molex connectors are widely recognised across the RC hobby as a robust, industry-standard connection type. They provide secure, reliable connections that resist accidental disconnection and deliver consistent power transfer. If your Traxxas Power Cell batteries have Molex connectors, this charger will fit perfectly.
- Can I leave my battery charging unattended? — Yes. The peak-detection circuitry automatically stops charging when your battery reaches full capacity, so you can safely leave your battery charging without risk of overcharging. However, it's always good practice to check on batteries periodically and never leave chargers operating in extreme heat or near flammable materials.
- What power source do I need to operate this charger? — The charger requires any 12-volt DC power source. This includes workshop power supplies, portable power stations with 12V DC output, vehicle power outlets (cigarette lighter style), or dedicated pit-side RC power supplies. Ensure your 12V DC source can supply adequate current—most workshop supplies easily exceed the charger's requirements.
- Is this charger designed for EZ-Start nitro vehicles? — Yes. The Traxxas Charger TRX2977 is specifically engineered to charge the batteries used in Traxxas EZ-Start systems, which are found on many of Traxxas's nitro-powered RC vehicles. If you run a Traxxas nitro car, this is the charger engineered specifically for your battery system.
- What happens if I try to charge a battery with the wrong voltage? — Never attempt to charge a battery with the wrong charger. Voltage mismatches can cause permanent damage, overheating, swelling, or battery failure. Always use the charger specifically designed for your battery type and voltage. This charger is designed exclusively for 5-cell and 6-cell NiMH batteries (6.0-7.2 volts).
