Overview
The Tamiya Scania 770 S 4x2 (TAM56379) is an exceptional 1/14 scale RC truck kit that brings one of Sweden's most impressive commercial vehicles to life. Launched in 2020, the real Scania 770 S represents the pinnacle of the manufacturer's S Series, powered by a formidable 16.4-litre V8 turbo engine producing 770 horsepower. This detailed assembly kit authentically captures that engineering excellence in miniature form, making it an ideal choice for experienced RC enthusiasts and scale truck builders seeking a rewarding, immersive build experience. Whether you're passionate about European haulage trucks, love constructing complex RC models, or want a versatile platform for customisation, the Tamiya Scania 770 S 4x2 delivers outstanding scale authenticity combined with proven Tamiya build quality and engineering.
This is not a ready-to-run model — it's a comprehensive assembly kit (Skill Level 4) designed for builders who appreciate meticulous detail work and want to create something truly special. The kit includes everything needed to construct the chassis, cab, and superstructure, though you'll need to source a radio system, battery pack, charger, and finishing paints separately. The reward for your effort is a commanding 469mm-long replica of a prestigious Swedish truck, complete with authentic 4x2 drivetrain layout, modern interior details, and the flexibility to build it as a standard or custom European-style variant.
For RC enthusiasts in the UK seeking a substantial, detailed tractor truck project that stands apart from typical racing models, the Tamiya Scania 770 S 4x2 represents excellent value and an opportunity to master advanced assembly techniques whilst creating a display-quality model that showcases real truck styling and proportions.
Key Features
- Authentic 1/14 scale dimensions — At 469mm in length, 193mm in width, and 315mm in height (excluding mirrors and antenna), this model faithfully reproduces the commanding presence of a full-size Scania 770 S, with a 272mm wheelbase that creates realistic proportions and handling characteristics on-road surfaces.
- Single front steering, single rear-axle drive 4x2 chassis — The kit features a proper 4x2 layout that mirrors the full-size vehicle's configuration, with the motor and transmission positioned at the front for authentic weight distribution and realistic driving dynamics that distinguish it from typical RC trucks.
- 3-speed transmission with gear-change capability — The assembly-type 3-speed transmission allows gear changes via a separately available 4-channel transmitter, adding a layer of realism and control sophistication that serious RC truck builders will appreciate for varied terrain and driving scenarios.
- Customisable exterior parts for normal and European-styled builds — The kit includes a roof high bar with integrated LED light bar housing, dual horns, name board, drop visor, bullbar, low bar, and sidebars, giving builders the flexibility to construct either a standard specification or trendy customised European variant that reflects real-world truck styling.
- New side skirts and auxiliary machinery — Purpose-designed parts for contemporary European truck aesthetics expand the customisation options, allowing builders to create modern, detailed iterations that reflect current haulage industry trends.
- Modern interior with dashboard and seats — The cab features contemporary design elements including a detailed dashboard and properly proportioned driver's seat, with compatibility for the optional Multi-Function Control Unit (MFC-03, sold separately) to add light, sound, and vibration effects that enhance realism.
- Included 1/14 scale driver figure — A detailed human figure adds character to the cab interior and further enhances the sense of scale and authenticity when displayed or photographed.
- Dual rear tyres with realistic tread — Heavy-duty dual rear tyres with authentic tread patterns replicate the load-carrying capability of commercial vehicles, supported by reinforced resin axles and metal leaf spring suspension for stability and durability.
- LED-ready rear light units — Optional LED brake lights (sold separately) can be installed, allowing builders to add functional lighting effects that further elevate the model's realism and visual impact.
- Brushed motor system — The kit uses a brushed motor configuration, a proven technology that offers straightforward operation and excellent compatibility with Tamiya's extensive range of upgrade and option parts.
- Reinforced suspension engineering — Metal leaf spring suspension combined with reinforced resin axles provides the durability needed for extended on-road driving whilst maintaining authentic suspension geometry that reflects real commercial vehicle design.
- Compatibility with Tractor Truck Option Parts ecosystem — The Scania 770 S 4x2 is compatible with Tamiya's extensive range of tractor truck upgrades and accessories, allowing builders to continuously refine performance, appearance, and functionality over time.
- Recommended Carson Reflex 2 6-channel radio — Whilst any compatible 4-channel transmitter will operate the model, Tamiya recommends the Carson Reflex 2 6-channel radio system for optimal control and potential future expansion.
Technical Performance
The Tamiya Scania 770 S 4x2 is engineered as an on-road focused model built to Skill Level 4 specifications, indicating it's designed for experienced builders comfortable with intermediate to advanced assembly techniques. The 2WD drivetrain (single rear-axle drive) combined with single front steering creates a realistic heavy-truck handling characteristic, where power is delivered to the rear wheels and steering is progressive through the front axle — exactly as it works on the full-size vehicle. The front-positioned motor and transmission layout is not merely cosmetic; it genuinely affects weight distribution and driving dynamics, creating a more authentic experience than many RC trucks that prioritise performance over realism. The 3-speed transmission with separately selectable gears via 4-channel transmitter adds operational depth, allowing builders and drivers to optimise power delivery and efficiency across different driving conditions. Build quality reflects Tamiya's reputation for precision engineering; the kit includes reinforced resin axles capable of handling the stresses of extended operation, combined with metal leaf spring suspension that provides both durability and realistic suspension articulation. The inclusion of dual rear tyres with proper tread patterns means the model handles realistically on-road, with load-carrying geometry that improves stability. All electrical components are designed around standard Tamiya specifications, ensuring compatibility with widely available 7.2-volt NiMh batteries and brushed motor controllers. The model requires a 7.2-volt battery pack with compatible charger (sold separately), which is a standard specification for 1/14 scale Tamiya trucks and means battery options are readily available from UK RC retailers. Surface contact is optimised for on-road driving on smooth, paved surfaces rather than off-road terrain, so performance will be optimal on tarmac, concrete, and sealed surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Tamiya Scania 770 S 4x2 suitable for beginners? — No, this is a Skill Level 4 kit designed for experienced builders. It requires patience, precision assembly techniques, and comfort working with detailed components. If you're new to RC model building, consider starting with a Skill Level 2 or 3 kit before progressing to this model.
- What makes the 4x2 configuration different from other Tamiya Scania models? — The 4x2 configuration features a single front steering axle and single rear drive axle, making it lighter and more manoeuvrable than the 6x4 version (item 56368). The 4x2 is more versatile for general haulage work and is considerably more popular in European fleet operations, hence why Tamiya included it in their Tractor Truck Series. The wheelbase is 35mm longer than some competing models, providing excellent stability.
- What battery does the Tamiya Scania 770 S 4x2 need? — The model requires a 7.2-volt NiMh battery pack with a compatible connector and a suitable charger. These are readily available from UK RC retailers and represent the standard power specification for 1/14 scale Tamiya tractor trucks. You should purchase a battery pack and charger separately when you order the kit.
- Can I add lights and sound to this model? — Yes, the kit is compatible with the optional Multi-Function Control Unit (MFC-03, sold separately), which enables light, sound, and vibration effects. The model also includes LED-ready rear light units where you can install optional LEDs to create functional brake lights. These upgrades significantly enhance realism and are recommended for builders seeking an immersive experience.
- How long does it take to build the Tamiya Scania 770 S 4x2? — Assembly time varies depending on your experience and attention to detail, but Skill Level 4 kits typically require 20-40 hours of focused work. Many builders spread this across several weeks, taking time to paint, finish, and customise their model for a truly professional appearance.
- What radio system should I use? — Tamiya recommends the Carson Reflex 2 6-channel radio system for optimal control of this model. However, any compatible 4-channel transmitter will operate the basic functions. The 3-speed transmission gear changes require a 4-channel or higher system, so single or 2-channel systems will not provide full functionality.
- Is this model waterproof? — No, the Tamiya Scania 770 S 4x2 is designed as an on-road model for dry conditions. It is not waterproof and should not be operated in wet weather or through water. Keep it away from puddles, wet grass, and rain to protect the electronics and motor.
- What's the difference between building this kit and buying a ready-to-run model? — This is an assembly kit where you construct the entire model from component parts — a rewarding process that teaches you how the model works and allows complete customisation. Ready-to-run models arrive assembled and ready to drive immediately, making them suitable for less experienced builders or those wanting instant gratification. This kit rewards patience with superior customisation options and deeper engagement with the building process.
- Can I upgrade performance with Tamiya option parts? — Yes, the Scania 770 S 4x2 is fully compatible with Tamiya's extensive Tractor Truck Option Parts range, allowing you to upgrade suspension, drivetrain, styling, and accessories throughout the model's life. This ecosystem of upgrades means your model can continue evolving as your skills and interests develop.
- How does the 3-speed transmission work? — The transmission can be shifted between three gears using a compatible 4-channel or higher transmitter, allowing you to optimise power delivery and efficiency for different driving scenarios. This adds genuine operational complexity and realism compared to single-speed models.
