Overview

The AXIAL 32P Portal Gears Underdrive 12/29T (11.5%), AF16P: AXP8 is a premium upgrade component designed for RC enthusiasts who demand enhanced performance from their trail buggies and off-road vehicles. This heavy-duty gear set represents a significant performance upgrade over factory-standard equipment, delivering improved climbing ability and turning capabilities that serious RC hobbyists in the UK have come to expect from Axial's engineering pedigree. Whether you're tackling challenging terrain at your local RC club or exploring demanding natural landscapes, these portal gears provide the mechanical advantage needed to conquer steeper inclines and navigate tighter corners with greater precision.

Portal gears are a sophisticated drivetrain component that offer distinct advantages over conventional gear systems. By moving the gear mesh away from the axle centreline, portal gears effectively increase ground clearance and allow for larger diameter tyres without sacrificing suspension geometry. This design philosophy makes them particularly valuable for rock crawlers, trail buggies and adventure-scale RC vehicles where ground clearance and obstacle negotiation are paramount. The AXIAL 32P Portal Gears Underdrive set is specifically engineered for the AXP8 platform, ensuring perfect fitment and seamless integration with your existing drivetrain architecture.

The underdrive ratio of 11.5% means that these gears will decrease wheel speed compared to stock gearing, trading raw velocity for increased torque and mechanical advantage at the wheels. This characteristic makes the 12/29T set ideal for rear axle installation, where improved climbing and turning capabilities are often more valuable than top-end speed. RC enthusiasts across the UK who specialise in technical terrain driving, whether on purpose-built RC courses or natural outdoor settings, will appreciate the enhanced control and traction delivery these gears provide.

Key Features

  • Heavy-Duty Construction — These 32-pitch portal gears are manufactured to withstand the demanding forces encountered in technical off-road driving, providing durability and reliability that serious RC hobbyists depend upon during extended trail sessions.
  • Underdrive Ratio Technology — The 11.5% underdrive configuration reduces wheel speed whilst increasing torque delivery at the wheels, giving you superior traction and mechanical advantage on steep climbs and technical obstacles.
  • 12/29T Gear Set — The precise ratio between pinion (12-tooth) and ring gear (29-tooth) is meticulously calculated to optimise performance across a range of terrain types and driving styles.
  • AXP8 Platform Compatibility — These gears are engineered specifically for the Axial AXP8 adventure-scale vehicle platform, ensuring flawless compatibility and perfect mechanical alignment with your existing drivetrain components.
  • Improved Climbing Performance — By sacrificing some top-end speed in favour of increased torque, the underdrive ratio enables your vehicle to tackle steeper gradients and more challenging vertical obstacles with greater confidence and control.
  • Enhanced Turning Capability — The increased mechanical advantage provides more precise steering control and improved responsiveness when navigating technical rock gardens, tight switchbacks and complex trail courses.
  • Rear Axle Optimisation — This set is specifically recommended for rear axle installation, where underdrive gearing delivers the most noticeable improvement in off-road performance and vehicle handling characteristics.

Technical Performance

The AXIAL 32P Portal Gears represent a sophisticated approach to drivetrain engineering that prioritises mechanical efficiency and performance delivery over raw speed metrics. The 32-pitch specification indicates the fineness of the gear teeth, with higher pitch numbers providing smoother mesh, reduced noise and more precise power transmission compared to coarser pitch alternatives. This gear set is manufactured to the exacting standards you would expect from Axial's reputation as a leading manufacturer of premium RC adventure vehicles and components. The underdrive configuration fundamentally changes your vehicle's performance character, converting a portion of engine or motor power into additional torque available at the wheels rather than rotational velocity. This engineering approach proves invaluable when operating in demanding terrain where traction, controllability and obstacle-surmounting capability matter more than absolute top speed. The 12/29T ratio delivers an 11.5% underdrive, a carefully calibrated figure that provides meaningful performance enhancement without compromising overall mobility or introducing excessive drag. Installation within the AXP8 portal axle housing ensures that stress is distributed across carefully engineered component geometry, reducing wear and extending component lifespan during regular use. For UK-based RC enthusiasts who specialise in trail buggies, scale crawlers and adventure-focused driving, this gear set represents a worthwhile investment in improved performance and handling characteristics.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is an underdrive gear ratio and why would I want one for my RC buggy? — An underdrive ratio reduces wheel speed whilst increasing the torque available at the wheels, making it ideal for technical terrain driving where climbing ability and traction control matter more than top speed. This is particularly valuable for rock crawlers and trail buggies navigating steep gradients and complex obstacles, which is why many serious RC hobbyists in the UK prefer underdrive gearing for their adventure vehicles.
  • Is this gear set suitable for beginners? — Whilst this is a high-quality component, gear installation requires mechanical knowledge and proper tools. Beginner drivers can certainly benefit from the performance improvements, but should either have experience with drivetrain maintenance or consult detailed installation guides before attempting to fit these gears themselves.
  • What vehicle models are compatible with this gear set? — These gears are specifically engineered for the AXP8 platform, which includes the Axial Gilamon 2.2 4X4 RTR brushed trail buggy and other vehicles built on the AXP8 architecture. Always verify your vehicle's platform designation before purchasing to ensure compatibility.
  • How much of a performance improvement will I notice with the 11.5% underdrive ratio? — You will experience noticeably improved climbing ability, enhanced traction on steep terrain and better overall control when navigating technical obstacles. The trade-off is a modest reduction in top-end speed, which most serious trail drivers consider a worthwhile compromise for the gains in capability and handling precision.
  • Are these gears suitable for both competitive racing and recreational trail driving? — These underdrive gears are optimised for technical terrain and climbing performance rather than competitive racing applications. They are ideal for recreational trail drivers and adventure-scale vehicle enthusiasts who prioritise obstacle-negotiation and terrain mastery over race-course speed.
