Axial UTB10 Capra 1.9 4X4 Unlimited RC Trail Buggy Overview

The Axial UTB10 Capra 1.9 4WS 4X4 Unlimited Trail Buggy isn't for overlanding or Sunday drives. This is a true rock crawler, meant for the most challenging trails and obstacles. It's the Axial rig that set the standard for 1/10 scale trail buggies - and now, it has raised the bar once again.

Highlighting this next-level 1/10 scale trail buggy is an all-new transmission with lower gearing for even better crawling capabilities. That feature joins many others - including 4-wheel steering, portal axles, Spektrum electronics, and Pro-Line OE (Original Equipment) tyres and wheels - to make the Capra superior to its competition in every possible way. This rig is ready for any trail, obstacle, or hill. It's a crawler that doesn't compromise.

This updated Capra has an improved final drive ratio of 45.37:1 (6.31 internal) compared to 31.4:1 (4.37 internal). This is 45% lower than the previous model, vastly improving the climbing ability and power of this rig.

The Capra's 4-wheel steering (4WS) is such an advantage compared to 2-wheel steering (2WS) crawlers that it may almost feel like cheating! Using the third channel button of the included Spektrum DX3 transmitter, you can steer the rear axle full left, straight, and full right to position the tyres perfectly for conquering obstacles. The user can program the DX3 to enable a 5-position rear steer switch for even for more tunability. In full-scale crawling competition, such subtle maneuvering is a must to avoid losing points from reversing or hitting a marker on the course. With the Capra, you experience more true rock crawling realism.

The Capra's tube chassis not only looks like a real trail buggy, but is optimized for suspension and tyre clearance. Licensed Currie F9 Portal Axles also increase ground clearance while turning the scale Pro-Line OE Holcomb 1.9 wheels and Pro-Line OE Mickey Thompson Baja Pro X tyres. The tyres feature aggressive tread for out-crawling the competition. Dual stage, open cell foam inserts are included, with soft outer foam and firm inner foam to improve grip and sidewall support. Both axles feature metal universals for a smooth, efficient, and durable drivetrain.

Nothing more is needed to complete the ready-to-run Capra except your choice of battery and charger. The included Spektrum DX3 transmitter is fully compatible with the Smart telemetry potential of the rig's Spektrum Firma 40A Smart ESC and Spektrum SR515 DSMR 5-channel receiver. Install a Spektrum Smart LiPo pack, and you can follow on-board battery capacity on the transmitter's voltage level indicator as you maneuver confidently in any weather and trail conditions. The electronics are protected by a waterproof and dustproof design.

It wasn't easy making the best even better, but Axial has done exactly that. Don't settle for a look-a-like copy. Get the rig that set the bar for 1/10 trail buggies and has now raised it again - the Axial UTB10 Capra 1.9 4WS 4X4 Unlimited Trail Buggy.

This isn't a casual Sunday drive vehicle — it's a purpose-built trail buggy engineered to conquer the most challenging obstacles, steep hillsides, and technical terrain that demanding RC hobbyists can throw at it. If you're searching for a ready-to-run RC rock crawler in the UK that actually delivers on its promises, the Capra stands in a league of its own, having earned its reputation as the rig that set the bar for 1/10 scale trail buggies before raising it even higher with this latest generation.

What sets the Capra apart from competitors is its completely redesigned transmission featuring a significantly lower gear ratio that transforms climbing ability and raw power delivery. The new 45.37:1 final drive ratio (with 6.31:1 internal gearing) represents a 45% reduction compared to the previous model, meaning this RTR ready-to-run RC buggy will crawl obstacles that would defeat standard trail buggies. Combined with licensed Currie F9 portal axles, four-wheel steering capability, and a tube chassis design that captures authentic rock crawler aesthetics, the Capra delivers both visual appeal and genuine performance without compromise.

This ready-to-run RC crawler arrives fully assembled with all electronics installed, including Spektrum radio equipment, waterproof servos, and a brushed motor that delivers the perfect balance between speed and technical crawling prowess. Whether you're a seasoned RC competitor or an experienced hobbyist upgrading your collection, the Capra represents the pinnacle of 1/10 scale trail buggy engineering that's available for purchase in the UK market today.

Key Features

  • Four-Wheel Steering (4WS) — Unlike standard two-wheel steering crawlers, the Capra's advanced 4WS system allows you to independently control both front and rear axles using your Spektrum DX3 transmitter's third channel. This gives you an enormous advantage when navigating tight obstacles, as you can position all four tyres perfectly for conquering technical sections, achieving the kind of subtle maneuvering that's essential in full-scale crawling competitions and realistic rock crawling experiences.
  • Improved Lower Gear Ratio Transmission — The redesigned transmission with a 45.37:1 final drive ratio represents a significant engineering upgrade from the previous 31.4:1 ratio. This 45% reduction in gearing vastly improves climbing ability and raw power, allowing the Capra to tackle steep inclines and high-traction obstacles with authority that standard trail buggies simply cannot match.
  • Licensed Currie F9 Portal Axles — These authentically licensed portal axles increase ground clearance whilst maintaining durability and performance. The "ramp style" third member design reduces hang-ups on obstacles, and the axles deliver over 45 degrees of steering capability, giving the Capra a distinct advantage over standard axle trail buggies competing in challenging terrain.
  • Tube Chassis Design with Composite Cage — The tubular chassis captures the authentic scale appearance of a real rock crawler buggy whilst being optimised for generous suspension articulation and tyre clearance. This engineering approach delivers both visual authenticity and functional performance, making the Capra equally at home on the trail or displayed in any serious RC collection.
  • Smooth, Durable 4-Link Suspension — Axial has fine-tuned the suspension geometry to achieve a perfect balance between flexibility and durability. This carefully engineered 4-link setup delivers smooth articulation over obstacles whilst maintaining the control needed for technical crawling, with aluminium oil-filled shocks featuring threaded, anodised bodies that allow precise dampening adjustment through simple spring pre-load rotation.
  • Officially Licensed Pro-Line OE Mickey Thompson Baja Pro X Tyres — The Capra rolls on genuinely licensed Pro-Line Original Equipment tyres featuring aggressive tread patterns specifically designed for out-crawling the competition. These soft-compound tyres mount on scale Pro-Line OE Holcomb 1.9 wheels, and dual-stage open-cell foam inserts with soft outer foam and firm inner foam provide both superior grip and sidewall support for technical terrain.
  • Waterproof Spektrum Electronics — The rig features a waterproof and dustproof Spektrum Firma 40A brushed ESC paired with an SR515 DSMR 5-channel receiver, protected against weather and trail conditions. The included DX3 2.4GHz smart transmitter is fully compatible with Spektrum Smart LiPo battery telemetry, allowing you to monitor voltage levels and battery capacity directly on your transmitter display whilst crawling.
  • Spektrum S683 Metal-Gear Steering Servos — Both front and rear axles are equipped with waterproof Spektrum S683 25T metal-gear servos that deliver reliable steering control with a smooth, durable finish capable of withstanding the demands of serious trail work.
  • Metal Universal Joints — Both axles feature metal universals that provide smooth, efficient drivetrain action and support the full 45 degrees of steering capability, ensuring durability and smooth operation throughout extended crawling sessions.
  • Stainless Steel Suspension Components — All suspension links and pivot balls are constructed from rust-proof stainless steel, ensuring precise suspension geometry and longevity even in wet conditions, muddy trails, or exposed to saltwater environments common in the UK.
  • Ready-to-Run — Truly Complete — This RTR package arrives fully assembled with motor installed, both steering servos pre-installed, ESC, receiver, transmitter, and even AA batteries for the remote control included. All you need to add is a 2-3S LiPo battery and compatible charger to start crawling immediately.

Technical Performance

The Capra's engineering represents the cutting edge of 1/10 scale trail buggy design. At its heart sits an Axial 540 brushed electric motor with a 14T pinion, delivering a balanced power delivery that prioritises technical crawling control over outright speed. The Spektrum Firma 40A brushed waterproof ESC manages power delivery with precision, offering forward, brake, and reverse functionality through the included DX3 2.4GHz smart transmitter with DSMR technology for superior range, response, and interference resistance. The rig accepts 2S or 3S LiPo batteries with EC3 or IC3 connectors, giving owners flexibility in power delivery and run time options. The motor features enlarged cooling ports for extended crawling sessions, ensuring consistent performance even during demanding technical sections. The drivetrain utilises a locked differential design with 4WD capability throughout, ensuring maximum traction when needed. With a wheelbase of 12.7 inches (323mm), overall length of 17.4 inches (442mm), width of 10.7 inches (272mm), and height of 9 inches (229mm), the Capra presents a compact yet substantial presence. The vehicle weighs 4.5 pounds (2.04kg) when ready to run, providing enough mass for realistic obstacle interaction without becoming unwieldy. Ground clearance of 3.33 inches (84.65mm) gives ample space for technical obstacles, whilst the 8.87-inch (225.3mm) front and rear track widths deliver stability across varied terrain. The pinion features 32-pitch gearing, and the vehicle body is constructed from screened polycarbonate with an injection-moulded tubular chassis, combining lightweight construction with genuine durability suitable for UK trails, backyard terrain, and all-terrain environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Axial Capra 1.9 suitable for beginners learning RC rock crawling? — Whilst the Capra is technically an assembled ready-to-run vehicle, it's classified as Skill Level 2, indicating it's best suited to hobbyists with some RC experience. The four-wheel steering system and advanced suspension geometry reward operator skill and understanding of terrain, making it ideal for someone transitioning from simpler RC models to serious trail buggies. Beginners can certainly operate it, but the advanced features will be better appreciated by experienced pilots.
  • What battery does the Capra 1.9 need, and what run time should I expect? — The Capra accepts 2S or 3S LiPo batteries with either EC3 or IC3 connectors. The recommended Spektrum SPMX133S30 1300mAh 3S 30C Smart LiPo battery works exceptionally well, providing good run time for technical crawling sessions. Run time varies considerably depending on terrain difficulty — technical rock crawling uses far less battery capacity than continuous flat-ground driving, but you can typically expect 20-40 minutes of enjoyable trail time per battery depending on how aggressive you're driving.
  • How is the Capra's four-wheel steering better than two-wheel steering crawlers? — Four-wheel steering gives you independent control of both front and rear axle angles via the transmitter's third channel. This allows you to position all four tyres perfectly for technical obstacles — something impossible with standard two-wheel steering. In full-scale crawling competition, this subtle maneuvering is essential to avoid losing points from reversing. The Capra delivers authentic rock crawling realism that two-wheel steering vehicles simply cannot match.
  • What makes the new transmission in this Capra generation significantly better? — The updated transmission features a 45.37:1 final drive ratio with 6.31:1 internal gearing, representing a 45% reduction compared to the previous model's 31.4:1 ratio. This dramatic gearing improvement vastly increases climbing ability and raw power delivery, allowing the Capra to tackle obstacles and inclines that would defeat earlier models or competing trail buggies at the same scale.
  • Is the Capra waterproof enough for wet UK trails? — The electronics are specifically designed with waterproof and dustproof construction, including the Spektrum Firma 40A ESC and SR515 receiver. The Spektrum S683 steering servos are also waterproof. However, whilst this protection allows operation in wet conditions, traditional RC best practices still apply — avoid prolonged submersion and rinse the vehicle with fresh water after exposure to saltwater or heavily muddy conditions.
  • How do I adjust the Capra's suspension for different terrain? — The aluminium oil-filled shock bodies are threaded and allow easy adjustment of spring pre-load by simply rotating the shock collars. This changes the dampening characteristics and ride height, allowing you to tune suspension performance for different trail conditions, obstacles, and driving styles without requiring tools or disassembly.
  • What's the difference between the Capra and other 1/10 scale trail buggies? — The Capra distinguishes itself through several key advantages: the new 45% lower gear ratio transmission for superior climbing, licensed Currie F9 portal axles for increased ground clearance, four-wheel steering for technical maneuvering, and authentic tube chassis design that balances realistic appearance with functional performance. These combined features make it genuinely superior to competing trail buggies in the 1/10 scale category.
  • Does the DX3 transmitter offer programmable options for the rear steering? — Yes, the included Spektrum DX3 transmitter allows programming of a 5-position rear steer switch for even greater tunability. This means you can fine-tune rear steering sensitivity and response characteristics to match your driving style and the specific trail conditions you're tackling.
  • What's the actual crawling performance like on steep hills and technical rock sections? — The Capra excels at steep inclines and technical rock crawling. The combination of portal axles providing ground clearance, the redesigned low-ratio transmission delivering climbing power, stainless steel suspension geometry optimised for smooth articulation, and aggressive Pro-Line tyres with dual-stage foam inserts creates a vehicle that attacks obstacles with authority. Real-world reviews and customer ratings of 4 out of 5 stars confirm the Capra delivers genuine performance on challenging UK trails.
