Overview
The Traxxas TRX-4 1979 Chevrolet Blazer 1:10 4X4 Electric All-Terrain Crawler represents the pinnacle of scale trail crawling, combining authentic 1970s styling with cutting-edge RC technology. This Ready-To-Race (RTR) model honours the rich heritage of the original 1979 K5 Blazer — a vehicle that defined the sport utility market when it launched in 1969 and became a favourite among 4x4 enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. Whether you're a seasoned RC car enthusiast looking for a reliable ready to run RC crawler, or someone discovering electric RC vehicles for the first time, this Traxxas masterpiece delivers genuine performance wrapped in period-correct bodywork that turns heads at any RC meet or local trail.
Built on the renowned and battle-tested TRX-4 chassis, this 1:10 scale electric 4WD RC crawler combines meticulous attention to detail with uncompromising mechanical engineering. Every aspect of this brushed electric RC truck has been designed to conquer challenging terrain whilst maintaining the authentic visual character of its real-world inspiration. The Traxxas TRX-4 is already recognised as one of the most capable scale crawlers available to UK RC enthusiasts, and this Blazer variant elevates that reputation further with its stunning replica Rally wheels, highly detailed chrome grill, and comprehensive suite of scale details that capture the essence of the original vehicle. This isn't just another RC car — it's a faithful tribute to an automotive icon, engineered to perform on demanding trails and rocky terrain.
What truly sets this model apart is the innovative new clipless body mounting system, exclusive to the TRX-4 79' Chevrolet K5 Blazer. This ingenious design combines clean, flowing lines with secure latching convenience, allowing the body to stay locked tight through the most intense trail action whilst releasing in just seconds for effortless chassis access. The complete package arrives ready to drive, including the waterproof XL-5 HV electronic speed control, the powerful Titan 21T reverse rotation motor, the advanced TQi 2.4 GHz radio system, and all necessary maintenance tools. You'll simply need to add batteries, a charger, and alkaline batteries for the transmitter to begin your crawling adventures.
Key Features
- Authentic 1979 K5 Blazer Styling — This beautifully detailed reproduction captures the iconic look of the 1979 Chevrolet Blazer with replica Rally wheels and a highly detailed chrome grill, making it instantly recognisable to enthusiasts and collectors whilst delivering genuine trail-crawling capability that honours the original vehicle's spirit.
- Revolutionary Clipless Body Mounting — New to the TRX-4 Blazer, this innovative system combines clean flowing lines with secure latching convenience, holding the body firmly during intense trail sessions yet releasing in seconds for quick chassis access and maintenance without tools or fuss.
- Waterproof XL-5 HV Electronic Speed Control — The waterproof ESC protects your investment during wet conditions and water crossings, whilst the HV designation means enhanced performance capability when paired with compatible battery configurations, giving you more power and control in challenging terrain.
- Titan 21T Reverse Rotation Motor — This high-torque brushed motor is specifically engineered for trail crawling with reverse rotation design, delivering the torque and control characteristics essential for technical rock crawling and obstacle negotiation rather than pure speed.
- 2-Speed High/Low Transmission with Remote Shifting — The dual-range transmission allows you to select high gear for faster terrain or low gear for maximum torque when tackling steep climbs and rocky obstacles, and you can shift remotely without stopping, adapting instantly to changing terrain demands.
- Remote-Locking Differential System — The 4-gear remote-locking differential enables you to lock the differentials electronically whilst driving, transforming the vehicle's traction characteristics to maintain power to all wheels when needed or allow free-spinning for smoother cornering on less demanding sections.
- Steel Ladder Frame Chassis — The chassis features a robust steel ladder frame construction with nylon composite crossmembers, providing the strength and rigidity necessary for serious trail crawling whilst keeping weight managed for better manoeuvrability and suspension performance.
- Shaft-Driven 4WD System — The proven shaft-driven four-wheel-drive system ensures reliable power delivery to all four wheels through a durable, well-proven drivetrain design that has earned respect among competitive RC crawlers and bashers alike.
- Electronic Hill Hold Brake System — The electronic hill hold brake prevents roll-back on steep descents, holding the vehicle in place when throttle is released on inclines, an essential safety feature for technical trail crawling.
- Advanced TQi 2.4 GHz Radio System — The TQi 2.4 GHz four-channel radio system includes integrated cruise control functionality and operates on a frequency that avoids interference, giving you reliable control range and multiple channel support for future upgrades.
- 2075X Metal Gear Servo — The durable metal gear steering servo provides the torque and reliability needed for precise steering control on rocky terrain and technical obstacles without stripping gears under extreme loading.
- Impressive Approach, Breakover and Departure Angles — With a 59-degree approach angle, 59-degree breakover angle, and 47-degree departure angle, this crawler is geometrically optimised for technical terrain, allowing it to climb steep obstacles and maintain ground clearance over irregular surfaces.
- Excellent Ground Clearance and Proportions — At 3.14 inches (80 mm) of ground clearance combined with a 20.62-inch overall length and 10.05-inch height, the Blazer achieves authentic scale proportions whilst maintaining the physical clearance necessary for serious trail work.
Technical Performance
The Traxxas TRX-4 1979 Chevrolet Blazer is engineered as a dedicated trail crawler rather than a speed machine, and every technical decision reflects that focused purpose. The XL-5 HV waterproof electronic speed control manages the Titan 21T reverse rotation brushed motor, delivering smooth, controllable throttle response essential for precise technical driving over rocks and obstacles. The motor's reverse rotation is specifically calibrated for crawling characteristics — providing excellent low-speed torque control rather than top-end velocity. The transmission system features a 2-speed high/low design with 32-pitch gearing and remote shifting capability, allowing instantaneous gear changes without stopping the vehicle. The differential system uses 4-gear construction with electronic remote-locking functionality across both axles, transforming traction characteristics on demand to suit varying terrain challenges. The chassis architecture employs a proven steel ladder frame with nylon composite crossmembers, combining rigidity with targeted weight distribution. Suspension geometry is meticulously balanced with front and rear shock lengths both measuring 3.54 inches (90 mm), ensuring consistent ride characteristics and predictable handling. Wheel fitment uses 12 mm hex hubs with 1.9-inch diameter wheels shod in 4.64-inch diameter tyres (118 x 48 mm front and rear), providing excellent ground contact and traction. The overall vehicle weighs 2.84 kilograms, striking a balance between stability and agility. Ground clearance of 3.14 inches combined with impressive angles (59° approach, 59° breakover, 47° departure) means this crawler tackles terrain that would stop ordinary RC vehicles. The waterproof XL-5 HV ESC accepts a wide variety of battery configurations including 4–7 cell NiMH batteries or 2S–3S LiPo batteries, giving you flexibility in power source selection depending on desired performance characteristics. The TQi 2.4 GHz radio system operates interference-free on a frequency band congested with many RC hobbyists, yet the system maintains reliable communication range through its advanced spread-spectrum technology. The 2075X metal gear servo ensures steering remains responsive and reliable throughout extended trail sessions, whilst the electronic hill hold brake prevents unwanted roll-back on steep terrain. This is a properly engineered trail tool, not a rushed compromise — every specification contributes to genuine off-road crawling performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Traxxas TRX-4 1979 Chevrolet Blazer suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. The TRX-4 platform is rated as Skill Level 1, making it suitable for newcomers to the hobby. The Ready-To-Race format means it arrives fully assembled and requires only batteries and a charger to operate. The 2-speed transmission and remote-locking differential can seem complex at first, but their presence actually makes the vehicle more user-friendly on varied terrain. Beginners should start in high-gear mode with the differentials unlocked until they gain confidence, then experiment with low-gear and locking features as their skills develop.
- What battery does the TRX-4 Blazer need, and how long does it run? — This model accepts either NiMH batteries (4–7 cell) or LiPo batteries (2S–3S configuration). NiMH packs are more forgiving for beginners, whilst LiPo offers higher performance. Battery capacity and cell count determine runtime — typically between 20 and 45 minutes depending on terrain, driving style, and battery capacity chosen. The XL-5 HV ESC is compatible with both battery types, though higher voltage LiPo configurations provide enhanced performance.
- What makes this Blazer different from other TRX-4 models? — This particular variant features the innovative new clipless body mounting system unique to the 1979 K5 Blazer version, allowing tool-free body removal. The authentic 1979 styling, replica Rally wheels, and detailed chrome grill also distinguish it. If you're comparing to the 1972 K5 Blazer High Trail Edition, this model offers the newer clipless system and slightly different visual proportions, though both share the same proven TRX-4 chassis platform.
- Is this model waterproof? — The electronics are waterproof-rated, specifically the XL-5 HV electronic speed control, allowing operation in wet conditions and through water crossings. The motor itself is a brushed type suitable for damp conditions. However, the body is painted plastic and not waterproof, so prolonged submersion should be avoided. After wet running, rinse the vehicle with fresh water and allow it to dry completely.
- What are the ground clearance and approach angles? — Ground clearance measures 3.14 inches (80 mm), with an impressive 59-degree approach angle, 59-degree breakover angle, and 47-degree departure angle. These figures make the TRX-4 Blazer exceptionally capable over rocky terrain, steep climbs, and obstacles. For reference, most standard RC cars offer significantly smaller angles.
- How do I maintain and service this crawler? — The high-quality maintenance tools included in the box cover basic adjustments. Regular maintenance includes checking for debris in the drivetrain, inspecting tyre condition, ensuring servo linkages move freely, and checking electronic connectors for corrosion. The steel frame may require occasional light cleaning, particularly after muddy terrain. Differential oil should be checked periodically and replaced as needed using Traxxas differential fluid.
- What's the advantage of the 2-speed transmission? — The 2-speed high/low transmission with remote shifting allows you to select the optimal gear for current terrain without stopping. High gear provides better speed and manoeuvrability on smoother sections, whilst low gear delivers maximum torque for climbing steep obstacles and rocky terrain. This flexibility makes the TRX-4 Blazer effective across diverse trail types.
- Can I upgrade this model with aftermarket parts? — Yes, the TRX-4 platform has extensive aftermarket support from companies like Treal Hobby, offering aluminium axle housings, upgraded suspension components, and various performance modifications. The ecosystem of available upgrades means your initial purchase can evolve with your skills and interests.
