Overview

The Hobbywing QuicRun WP 1625 Waterproof Brushed ESC is purpose-built for new beginners and intermediate RC modellers who want reliable, easy-to-use electronic speed control without unnecessary complexity. This compact speed controller combines Hobbywing's renowned build quality with a focus on simplicity, making it an ideal choice for anyone stepping into the world of RC car racing in the UK. Whether you're piloting a 1/16th or 1/18th scale touring car, buggy, monster truck or truck, this ESC delivers the performance and protection you need to enjoy your RC hobby with confidence.

What sets the QuicRun WP 1625 apart from other entry-level ESCs is its waterproof and dust-proof design, which means you can take your RC car out in all weather conditions without worrying about water or dust damage to the electronics. This all-weather capability is particularly valuable for UK RC enthusiasts who don't want to be limited by unpredictable British weather. The ESC's robust construction, combined with advanced software technology, ensures high power output and reliable overload protection that keeps your speed controller safe even during intense racing sessions.

The philosophy behind the QuicRun WP 1625 is straightforward: provide genuine Hobbywing engineering excellence in an accessible package that doesn't overwhelm beginners. With automatic throttle calibration and easy parameter setting via jumper caps, you can have your RC setup running in minutes, not hours. This is the speed controller for RC enthusiasts who want proven reliability without the learning curve of complicated programmers or technical menus.

Key Features

  • Waterproof and Dust-Proof Design — The sealed construction protects all internal electronics from water ingress and dust contamination, allowing you to run your RC car in wet conditions, muddy terrain, or dusty environments without risk of damage. This all-weather capability is essential for UK RC car racing where weather can be unpredictable.
  • Automatic Throttle Calibration — The ESC automatically calibrates your transmitter's throttle range when you first power it up, eliminating the need for manual calibration procedures. This feature is particularly valuable for beginners who may not understand the technical aspects of throttle programming.
  • Easy Jumper Cap Parameter Setting — Rather than requiring a complicated programmer or LCD screen, the QuicRun WP 1625 lets you adjust settings using simple jumper caps. This approach is more intuitive for new modellers and reduces the risk of accidental misconfiguration.
  • Small Compact Size — At just 34.0 x 24.0 x 14.0mm and weighing only 24 grams, this ESC fits easily into tight spaces in small-scale RC vehicles. The compact form factor doesn't sacrifice performance or durability despite its diminutive size.
  • Built-in Capacitor Module — The integrated capacitor smooths power delivery and protects against voltage spikes, extending the lifespan of both the ESC and your motor. This is especially important when using brushed motors that draw variable current during acceleration and braking.
  • High Current Endurance — With a continuous current rating of 25 amps and peak rating of 100 amps, this ESC provides genuine power for aggressive driving without thermal shutdown. The high peak rating ensures responsive acceleration even from a standstill.
  • Forward, Reverse and Brake Modes — The ESC supports three-way directional control with dedicated brake function, giving you complete vehicle control in sport racing and casual driving scenarios. This flexibility suits various racing formats and driving styles.
  • Multiple Protection Systems — Low voltage cut-off protection prevents over-discharging your battery, over-heat protection shuts down the ESC if temperatures become unsafe, and throttle signal loss protection activates brake function if your radio connection drops. These safety features extend equipment lifespan and prevent damage during malfunctions.
  • Small TAMIYA Connectors — The battery input uses small TAMIYA connectors, which are industry-standard on RC cars at this scale and widely available. The 4.0mm bullet connectors on the motor output are robust and reliable.
  • Reliable Hardware and Advanced Software — Hobbywing's combination of high-quality components and sophisticated firmware creates an ESC that delivers consistent performance lap after lap. The synergy between hardware and software ensures predictable handling characteristics.

Technical Performance

The QuicRun WP 1625 represents a mature design optimised specifically for small-scale brushed motor RC vehicles. Its 25-amp continuous current capability with 100-amp peak capacity is perfectly matched to the torque characteristics of 280T, 370T and 380T brushed motors commonly used in 1/16th and 1/18th scale touring cars, buggies and monster trucks. The ESC accepts input power from 2-3S LiPo batteries (7.4-11.1 volts) or 6-9 cell NiMH battery packs, providing flexibility in battery choice depending on your budget and performance preferences. On 2S LiPo configuration, brushed motors should not exceed 30,000 RPM; on 3S LiPo, the RPM limit drops to 20,000 to protect the motor and ESC from over-speed damage. The integrated 6-volt, 1-amp BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) in linear mode provides stable power to your receiver and servos, eliminating the need for a separate battery pack to power your radio equipment. With a forward resistance of just 0.003 ohms in both directions, the ESC minimises energy loss and voltage drop during power delivery. The 1kHz PWM frequency provides smooth motor control across the entire throttle range, from crawling speeds to maximum acceleration. At just 23.5 to 24 grams, the ESC's lightweight construction helps keep your overall vehicle weight low, improving acceleration and handling response. The compact dimensions make it easy to fit into small vehicle chassis without requiring extensive modification. Whether you're running on tarmac at a local RC track or bashing across rough terrain, the waterproof electronics ensure reliable operation season after season in the UK climate.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Hobbywing QuicRun WP 1625 suitable for beginners to RC car racing? — Yes, the QuicRun WP 1625 is specifically designed for new beginners and intermediate modellers. The automatic throttle calibration removes one of the most confusing aspects of ESC setup, and jumper cap programming is far more intuitive than using an LCD programmer. If you're just starting out with RC cars in the UK, this ESC takes the guesswork out of configuration.
  • What battery does the Hobbywing QuicRun WP 1625 require? — This ESC accepts either 2-3S LiPo batteries (7.4 to 11.1 volts) or 6-9 cell NiMH battery packs (7.2 to 10.8 volts). 2S LiPo provides higher performance and faster charging, whilst NiMH is more forgiving for beginners and cheaper to purchase initially. On 2S LiPo, motors should not exceed 30,000 RPM; on 3S LiPo, keep motors below 20,000 RPM.
  • Can I use this ESC in wet weather? — Absolutely. The waterproof and dust-proof design specifically allows the QuicRun WP 1625 to function in all weather conditions without risk of water or dust damage. This makes it ideal for UK racing where weather can be unpredictable, though you should still avoid submerging the ESC in water.
  • What brushed motors are compatible with this speed controller? — The ESC is designed for 280-size, 370-size and 380-size brushed motors, which are standard in 1/16th and 1/18th scale RC cars. These motor sizes are widely available and reasonably priced, making replacements easy to source.
  • Does the QuicRun WP 1625 require a programmer to set up? — No, this is one of the major advantages for beginners. Parameter setting is done via jumper caps rather than a programmer, and throttle calibration is automatic. You can have the ESC running with just a battery, transmitter and receiver.
  • What protection features does this ESC include? — The QuicRun WP 1625 features low voltage cut-off protection to prevent battery over-discharge, over-heat protection that shuts down if temperatures become unsafe, and throttle signal loss protection that applies the brake if your radio connection drops. These three layers of protection extend the life of your equipment.
  • Is this ESC better than the original QuicRun 1625 non-waterproof version? — The waterproof version (WP) has sealed electronics to resist moisture and dust, making it superior for the UK's variable weather. If you plan to race outdoors regularly, the waterproof design justifies the choice over older non-waterproof models.
  • How does the 100-amp peak rating translate to real-world performance? — The 100-amp peak allows the ESC to deliver maximum acceleration without current limiting for approximately 3-5 seconds. This gives you that responsive launch off the line and powerful punch when accelerating, but the 25-amp continuous rating is what you'll experience during sustained driving.
  • What connector types are used? — Battery input uses small TAMIYA connectors, which are standard on most RC cars at this scale. Motor output uses 4.0mm female bullet connectors. Both are soldered and ready to install — you don't need to make any of your own connections.
