Overview
The Tamiya Surface Primer for Plastic/Metal in Grey (TAM87026) is an essential finishing material for anyone serious about model preparation and paint application. Whether you're an experienced modeller working on competition-grade RC cars, a weekend basher customising your favourite RC truck, or a newcomer to the hobby discovering the world of RC model finishing in the UK, this primer is specifically designed to prepare your plastic model parts for a professional paint finish. The light grey colour makes it ideal for dark colour applications, providing excellent coverage and a stable base that will help your topcoat colours appear more vibrant and true to your vision.
This spray-applied primer is formulated to work with ABS and Styrene plastic materials commonly found in RC model kits, as well as metal parts, making it a genuinely versatile addition to your finishing kit. The primer creates a smooth, uniform surface that helps subsequent paint layers adhere properly whilst also providing superior coverage compared to painting directly onto bare plastic. For modellers in the UK looking for a reliable, tried-and-tested primer that delivers consistent results, Tamiya's Surface Primer range is the benchmark standard that professional builders trust.
With a generous 100ml capacity per can, this primer provides excellent value and allows you to prepare multiple model components or undertake larger-scale finishing projects. The solid finish ensures even coverage with minimal effort, and the spray application method means you can achieve a professional result without specialised equipment—just a well-ventilated workspace and basic model preparation skills.
Key Features
- Dual-Substrate Compatibility — This primer works exceptionally well on both ABS and Styrene plastics, which are the most common materials used in RC model construction, as well as on metal parts, giving you a single solution for virtually all your model preparation needs regardless of component material.
- Light Grey Colour Formula — The carefully selected grey shade is specifically chosen to provide an ideal base for dark colour paint applications, helping darker topcoats achieve superior colour saturation, depth and a more professional finish compared to white or clear primers.
- Spray Application Method — The convenient aerosol spray format allows for quick, even coverage across model components without the need for brushes, compressors or spray equipment, making it accessible to modellers of all skill levels and perfect for RC enthusiasts working at home.
- Wet Sandable Surface — One of the standout features of Tamiya's surface primers is that they may be wet sanded before paint is applied, allowing you to achieve an exceptionally smooth, professional finish that rivals automotive-quality results on your finished models.
- Excellent Surface Preparation — By creating a uniform base layer, this primer dramatically improves paint adhesion and coverage, reducing the number of topcoat layers needed and ensuring your finished paint job looks more professional and lasts longer without chipping or peeling.
- Ideal for Model Finishing Workflows — This primer fits perfectly into professional model preparation workflows, working seamlessly between your initial assembly and sanding stages and your final paint application, helping bridge the gap between bare plastic and vibrant topcoat colours.
Technical Performance
The Tamiya Surface Primer for Plastic/Metal represents a carefully engineered finishing material developed specifically for scale model applications. With a 100ml capacity per aerosol can, this primer delivers consistent, reliable coverage across both ABS and Styrene plastic substrates as well as metal components, making it the go-to choice for RC modellers preparing everything from small RC car body panels to larger scale model projects. The solid finish formulation ensures even, uniform coverage without runs or drips, even when applied by less experienced modellers. The light grey colour was specifically selected to provide optimal contrast and colour base for dark-coloured topcoats, helping colours like blacks, dark blues, dark reds and other deep hues achieve their maximum visual impact and colour saturation on your finished models. The spray application method delivers a fine, consistent atomisation that creates smooth coverage without requiring specialised spray equipment—a standard aerosol valve system that works reliably in typical UK workshop conditions. The unique wet-sandable property means that after the primer has dried, you can carefully wet-sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to remove any minor imperfections, dust particles or texture inconsistencies, resulting in a glass-smooth base for your topcoat paint. This capability is what separates professional-grade primers from basic alternatives and is why Tamiya's primers are trusted by competitive modellers and serious hobbyists across the RC community in the UK and worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use this primer on both plastic and metal RC model parts? — Yes, absolutely. This primer is specifically formulated to work excellently on ABS and Styrene plastic materials (the most common plastics in RC model kits) as well as on metal components, making it a genuine all-in-one solution for preparing your entire RC model for paint.
- Why should I use primer before painting my RC model? — Primer serves several critical functions in professional model finishing. It creates a uniform base that helps topcoat paint adhere properly, dramatically improves coverage (meaning you need fewer topcoat layers), helps achieve more vibrant and true-to-colour results, and provides protection for your underlying plastic or metal by sealing it against moisture and environmental damage. For any RC modeller in the UK seeking professional-looking results, primer is an essential step rather than an optional luxury.
- What does wet-sandable mean and why does it matter? — After the primer has dried completely, you can carefully sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper and water to remove any dust, imperfections or texture variations, creating a glass-smooth finish. This capability means your final topcoat paint will have a perfectly smooth base to adhere to, resulting in a more professional appearance and better paint adhesion than painting over an unsanded primer surface.
- Why is grey primer better than white primer for dark colours? — The light grey colour of this primer has been specifically chosen to provide an optimal base for dark colour topcoats. Grey offers better contrast and colour base than white, allowing dark colours like blacks, dark blues, dark reds and other deep hues to achieve superior colour saturation, depth and visual impact compared to primer in other colours.
- How much surface area can one 100ml can cover? — A single 100ml aerosol can provides generous coverage for multiple model components or smaller to medium-sized model projects. Coverage will vary depending on your spraying technique and the texture of the surface being primed, but you should expect to prime numerous RC car body panels or similar-scale components with a single can.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Yes, this primer is excellent for modellers of all skill levels, including complete beginners. The spray application method is straightforward and requires no special equipment—just basic model preparation skills, a well-ventilated workspace and the standard aerosol can. Follow Tamiya's application instructions for best results.
- What is the difference between this primer and other Tamiya finishing products? — Tamiya Surface Primer is a dedicated preparation product designed specifically for creating an optimal base for subsequent paint layers. Unlike topcoat paints which are applied for colour and finish, primers like this one focus on surface preparation, adhesion and the ability to be wet-sanded for professional results.
