Overview

The Axial Upper Rear Link Riser in aluminium is a premium suspension upgrade component designed specifically for the UTB18 Capra rock crawler. This precision-engineered part represents a significant enhancement over standard components, delivering measurable improvements to your crawler's climbing performance and durability. Whether you're a serious RC rock crawling competitor, a weekend trail enthusiast, or someone exploring the world of scale RC crawlers in the UK, this upgrade directly addresses one of the most critical challenges in steep terrain negotiation: preventing the rear of your rig from squatting down during aggressive climbs and difficult ledge negotiations.

The UTB18 Capra platform has earned respect among UK RC enthusiasts for its authentic scale appearance and capable suspension geometry, making it an excellent choice for those interested in rock crawling. However, like all crawler platforms, its performance can be optimised through strategic upgrades. The Upper Rear Link Riser is one such upgrade that delivers tangible benefits without requiring complex installation or significant modifications to your existing setup. For RC car enthusiasts in the UK looking to improve their crawler's real-world performance on challenging terrain, this component offers genuine value and engineering integrity backed by Axial's reputation for quality.

Built from premium aluminium alloy, this riser immediately distinguishes itself through material choice alone. Aluminium provides the ideal balance of weight efficiency and structural rigidity that rock crawlers demand, ensuring your suspension geometry adjustments translate directly into improved performance rather than being absorbed by flex or deflection in the mounting structure itself.

Key Features

  • Aluminium Construction — Manufactured from high-quality aluminium alloy, this component resists corrosion and maintains dimensional precision across countless climbing sessions, ensuring consistent performance whether you're crawling wet, muddy British terrain or dry desert-style courses.
  • Increased Anti-Squat Geometry — By raising the upper link mounting points, this riser fundamentally alters your suspension's anti-squat characteristics, a critical suspension geometry principle that limits how much the rear end squats down under acceleration and climbing forces.
  • Prevents Rear-Over Tendencies — The primary benefit of improved anti-squat is eliminating the dangerous situation where aggressive climbing attempts cause the rear of your rig to squat so severely that it pulls the entire vehicle backwards over its own centre of gravity, a failure mode that frustrates drivers and damages equipment.
  • Enhanced Climbing Performance — With anti-squat properly optimised through this upgrade, your UTB18 Capra gains the geometric advantage needed to confidently tackle steeper climbing angles and more challenging ledge obstacles that previously felt risky or impossible.
  • Direct Fitment for UTB18 — Engineered specifically for the UTB18 Capra platform, this component integrates seamlessly with existing suspension components without requiring additional modifications or compatibility adjustments.
  • Proven Axial Engineering — As an official Axial component, this riser benefits from the same engineering scrutiny and quality standards applied to complete rock crawler models, ensuring it performs reliably across demanding terrain.

Technical Performance

The Upper Rear Link Riser represents a focused engineering solution to a specific suspension geometry challenge in rock crawling. The core principle involved relates to anti-squat, a suspension geometry configuration that limits how much the rear end of a vehicle squats downward under acceleration and climbing forces. In full-scale rock crawling and off-road vehicle design, anti-squat is measured and carefully balanced to prevent exactly the scenario this component addresses: the rear of the vehicle squatting so dramatically that it pulls the entire rig backwards, potentially causing roll-overs or putting the driver in a dangerous and uncontrolled situation. By raising the mounting points of the upper rear suspension links, this aluminium riser effectively increases the angle at which those links attach to both the axle assembly and the chassis, directly improving the vehicle's anti-squat characteristics. The aluminium material ensures that this geometric benefit isn't lost to flex or deflection in the mounting structure itself—a critical consideration in a sport where precision suspension geometry directly translates to performance on obstacles. For drivers of the UTB18 Capra who frequently encounter steep climbs and challenging ledges, either in competitive rock crawling events or recreational trail sessions across the UK's varied terrain, this component delivers measurable improvements in confidence and capability without requiring advanced mechanical knowledge to install or understand.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does anti-squat mean and why is it important for my RC rock crawler? — Anti-squat is a suspension geometry configuration that limits how much the rear end of your vehicle dips downward when you accelerate or attempt steep climbs. This is critical in rock crawling because excessive rear squat can cause your rig to pull itself backwards over its own centre of gravity during aggressive climbing attempts, leading to rollovers and lost control. By installing this riser to increase anti-squat, you're essentially preventing the rear from squatting as much, which keeps the vehicle balanced and prevents this dangerous failure mode.
  • Will this riser work with my standard UTB18 Capra setup? — Yes, this component is engineered specifically for direct fitment on the UTB18 Capra platform and integrates seamlessly with existing suspension components without requiring modifications or additional parts.
  • Is this suitable for beginners to RC rock crawling? — Whilst this is a performance-focused upgrade component rather than a complete ready-to-run vehicle, it is certainly appropriate for anyone building or modifying a UTB18 Capra. The installation process is straightforward for anyone with basic RC mechanical knowledge, and the performance benefit is immediate and noticeable. Beginners to rock crawling will benefit from the improved climbing confidence this component provides.
  • How does aluminium construction benefit this component compared to plastic alternatives? — Aluminium offers superior durability, corrosion resistance, and structural rigidity compared to plastic composites. In a suspension component like this riser, material rigidity is essential because any flex or deflection in the part means your carefully engineered geometry improvements are partially lost. Aluminium ensures the suspension geometry changes you're paying for actually translate into real performance improvements.
  • What is the difference between this riser and other suspension upgrades available for the UTB18? — This component addresses a specific suspension geometry challenge—anti-squat during climbing—by raising the upper link mounting points. Other upgrades might focus on different aspects such as droop settings, shock oil viscosity, or spring rates. This riser is the focused solution for preventing rear squat and the backwards-pulling sensation during aggressive climbs.
