Overview

The ARRMA Pinion Gear, 35T Mod1 Safe-D5 Z-ARA311130 is an essential replacement and upgrade component for RC enthusiasts across the UK who demand reliability and precision in their electric RC vehicles. Whether you're a serious competitor, a weekend basher, or someone exploring the world of RC cars and trucks, this tough steel pinion gear delivers the performance and durability needed for extreme RC conditions. As a critical drivetrain component, the pinion gear directly affects acceleration, top speed, and overall power delivery from your motor to the wheels, making it one of the most important gears in your RC car UK setup.

Manufactured by ARRMA, a recognised leader in the RC hobby industry, this 35-tooth pinion gear is engineered with precision and built to withstand the demands of modern electric RC racing and bashing. The Safe-D5 bore design sets this gear apart from standard alternatives, providing a secure connection to your motor shaft that ensures you won't lose drive or braking power even if your set-screw backs out during intense driving sessions. This makes it an indispensable spare part to carry in your RC tool box, and a perfect choice for anyone looking to upgrade their drivetrain reliability and performance on the track or trail.

At RC Model Shop, we stock the ARRMA Pinion Gear, 35T Mod1 Safe-D5 because we understand that our customers deserve genuine, quality components that perform consistently. This gear is compatible with a wide range of ARRMA vehicles and other RC cars that use 5mm motor shafts, making it a versatile addition to your spare parts collection.

Key Features

  • Strong and durable steel construction — Manufactured from premium steel, this pinion gear is built to withstand the extreme forces encountered during high-speed driving, hard impacts, and intense RC racing conditions, ensuring long-lasting performance even with regular use on challenging terrain.
  • Precision manufactured wide tooth profile — The carefully engineered tooth design provides smooth, efficient power transfer from your motor to the rest of your drivetrain, reducing noise, vibration, and wear whilst maintaining consistent acceleration and speed delivery.
  • Safe-D5 bore with 'D' shaped hole — This innovative design features a distinctive D-shaped hole that matches the profile of your motor shaft, preventing the gear from spinning freely on the shaft and ensuring that both drive and braking power are maintained even if the set-screw loosens or backs out during aggressive driving.
  • Suits 5mm motor shaft diameter — Specifically designed for motors with 5mm diameter shafts, this gear is compatible with a wide range of ARRMA vehicles and many other electric RC cars and trucks available in the UK market.
  • Precision manufactured threaded set-screw hole — The expertly threaded hole accommodates an M4 x 4mm set-screw (included) that secures the gear firmly to your motor shaft, with the threading ensuring a strong, repeatable connection that resists loosening during intense driving.
  • E-clip supplied for motor shaft pinion retention — An additional 3.2mm E-clip is included to provide secondary retention on your motor shaft, offering peace of mind that your pinion gear will remain securely fastened even in the most demanding racing and bashing scenarios.

Technical Performance

This 35T Mod1 Safe-D5 pinion gear represents the perfect balance of strength and precision engineering for demanding RC applications. The Mod1 pitch specification means the gear is designed to mesh efficiently with Mod1 spur gears, the standard found on most modern brushless RC cars and trucks in the UK hobby market. With 35 teeth, this is a popular tooth count that delivers a balanced compromise between acceleration and top speed—fewer teeth than a 36T gear provides slightly quicker acceleration and lower top speed, making it ideal for technical courses and indoor track racing, whilst still offering competitive performance on open terrain. The Safe-D5 bore design is engineered specifically to prevent the common problem of pinion gear slip, where worn set-screws or vibration can cause the gear to rotate independently on the motor shaft, resulting in loss of drive and brake control. The wide tooth profile ensures that each tooth engages smoothly with your spur gear, distributing load evenly across the contact surface and reducing stress concentration points that could lead to premature tooth breakage. The precision manufacturing process guarantees tight tolerances and consistent quality, so you can rely on this gear for consistent performance lap after lap. All of this engineering excellence is delivered in a compact, lightweight package that requires no special tools or technical knowledge to install—simply remove your old pinion gear and slip on the new one using the included set-screw and E-clip.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the ARRMA 35T Safe-D5 pinion gear suitable for beginners? — Absolutely. Whilst this is a replacement component rather than a complete vehicle, it is extremely easy to install with just a hex key. Even if you are new to RC car maintenance and upgrades, fitting a pinion gear is one of the most straightforward tasks you can perform, requiring only a few minutes and basic tools. The included set-screw and E-clip make installation foolproof, and removing an old gear and fitting a new one is an excellent first maintenance task for anyone learning how their RC car works.
  • What does the Safe-D5 bore do, and why is it better than a standard round hole? — The Safe-D5 bore features a D-shaped hole that matches the profile of your motor shaft, rather than a standard circular hole. This design prevents the gear from spinning on the shaft if your set-screw becomes loose or backs out due to vibration. With a standard round bore, a loose set-screw means you lose both drive and brake power because the gear spins independently. With Safe-D5, the D-shaped engagement ensures mechanical lock-up even with a failed set-screw, giving you confidence that you won't suddenly lose control during a race or bashing session.
  • How many teeth should I choose—35T or 36T? — The 35T gear in this product provides slightly quicker acceleration and a marginally lower top speed compared to the 36T alternative. The difference is subtle but noticeable on technical, tight courses where acceleration out of corners is important. If you primarily race on long, open, high-speed tracks, a 36T or higher tooth count may give you more top speed. The 35T is an excellent all-purpose choice that works well for mixed terrain, indoor carpet racing, and general bashing.
  • What RC cars and trucks can I use this gear with? — This pinion gear is designed for any ARRMA vehicle and any other electric RC car or truck that uses a Mod1 pitch spur gear and a 5mm diameter motor shaft. This includes many popular 1/10 scale brushless RC buggies, stadium trucks, monster trucks, and touring cars available across the UK. Before purchasing, verify that your vehicle has a 5mm motor shaft and uses Mod1 gearing; if you're unsure, check your vehicle's manual or contact our team at RC Model Shop for guidance.
  • Do I need any tools or special equipment to fit this pinion gear? — No special tools are required. You will need a small hex key (typically 2mm or 2.5mm) to remove and tighten the set-screw, and you may find it helpful to have small pliers or tweezers to handle the E-clip. The entire installation process takes just a few minutes. Our team at RC Model Shop can also fit the gear for you if you prefer professional installation.
  • Is this gear compatible with brushless and brushed motors? — Yes, this pinion gear works with both brushless and brushed electric motors, as long as they have a 5mm shaft diameter and your vehicle uses Mod1 gearing. The Safe-D5 bore and tooth profile design are universal and perform equally well regardless of motor type.
  • How often do I need to replace my pinion gear? — With proper maintenance and regular cleaning, a quality steel pinion gear like this one can last a very long time. However, teeth can become worn or broken if you drive over abrasive surfaces, crash hard, or if your spur gear is worn and causing increased friction. Carrying a spare pinion gear is a smart idea for any serious RC enthusiast, and many drivers keep one in their tool box for emergencies during races or events.
  • What is the difference between Mod1 and other gear pitches? — Mod1 (Module 1) is a standard gear pitch specification that ensures teeth are the correct size and shape to mesh smoothly with other Mod1 gears. Using a pinion gear of the wrong pitch with your spur gear will result in poor mesh, excessive noise, binding, and rapid wear. The Mod1 specification in this product means it is engineered to work perfectly with the standard Mod1 spur gears found on most modern RC vehicles.
