Overview

The ARRMA Pinion Gear, 34T Mod1 Safe-D5 is an essential replacement component for any serious RC enthusiast running ARRMA vehicles in the UK. Whether you're a competitive racer, weekend basher, or dedicated RC car hobbyist, having quality pinion gears in your toolkit ensures you can keep your RC model running at peak performance. This precision-engineered steel pinion gear is specifically designed to deliver reliable power transmission and exceptional durability, making it the perfect part to carry in your RC tool box for emergency repairs or upgrades on the track or field.

Pinion gears are critical components in any RC drivetrain, responsible for transferring power from your brushless motor to the main transmission system. The 34-tooth configuration provides an excellent balance of acceleration and top-end speed for most RC applications, whilst the Safe-D5 bore design offers enhanced safety and reliability by preventing drive loss during aggressive driving conditions. If you're serious about maintaining your RC buggy, RC truggy, or RC monster truck, this ARRMA pinion gear should be part of your essential spare parts collection.

ARRMA is a globally recognised brand synonymous with durable, high-performance RC vehicles and components, and this pinion gear exemplifies their commitment to quality. The Safe-D5 technology represents a significant advancement in pinion gear design, addressing one of the most common failure points in RC drivetrains. Whether you're upgrading from a worn pinion, experimenting with different gear ratios, or simply maintaining a backup supply for emergencies, this 34T Mod1 pinion gear delivers the precision and reliability that discerning RC enthusiasts demand.

Key Features

  • Strong and Durable Steel Construction — This pinion gear is manufactured from tough, high-quality steel that withstands extreme RC driving conditions, whether you're bashing across rough terrain, racing at high speeds, or competing in organised events. Steel construction ensures longevity and reliability even under sustained load and stress.
  • Safe-D5 Bore Design — The distinctive D-shaped hole matches the motor shaft profile perfectly, which is crucial because it prevents drive loss and brake failure if your set-screw backs out during aggressive driving. This innovative safety feature gives you peace of mind knowing your RC's drivetrain won't fail unexpectedly, making it particularly valuable for competitive drivers and serious hobbyists.
  • Precision Manufactured Wide Tooth Profile — Each tooth is engineered with precision manufacturing techniques to create a wider tooth profile that delivers smooth, efficient power transmission and reduces noise during operation. This design minimises wear and stress on both the pinion and spur gear, extending the lifespan of your entire drivetrain.
  • Compatible with 5mm Motor Shaft Diameter — This pinion gear is specifically designed for motors with a standard 5mm shaft diameter, which is the most common size across modern ARRMA RC vehicles. This universal compatibility means it will work with a wide range of brushless motors commonly found in ready-to-run RC cars and upgrades.
  • Precision Manufactured Threaded Set-Screw Hole — The precision-threaded hole accommodates the included M4 x 4mm set-screw, allowing you to securely fasten the pinion gear to your motor shaft with confidence that it will remain in place during high-speed driving and rapid acceleration.
  • E-Clip Retention System Included — An E-clip designed for 3.2mm motor shafts is supplied with this gear, providing an additional retention mechanism that works alongside the set-screw to ensure maximum security and prevent any possibility of the pinion slipping on the shaft during operation.

Technical Performance

The ARRMA Pinion Gear, 34T Mod1 Safe-D5 represents cutting-edge engineering in drivetrain components for the RC hobby. The 34-tooth configuration is expertly calibrated to provide an optimal balance between acceleration response and top-end velocity for most RC applications, making it suitable for anything from high-speed bashing to competitive racing. The Mod1 pitch specification ensures compatibility with standard RC spur gears commonly found across the industry, whilst the precision-manufactured steel construction maintains dimensional accuracy under the extreme pressures and rotational forces typical of brushless electric RC motors. The Safe-D5 bore design addresses a critical reliability issue in RC drivetrains: the propensity for set-screws to gradually loosen through vibration and shock loading. By incorporating a D-shaped bore that matches motor shaft profiles, this pinion gear eliminates play and ensures positive drive engagement that cannot be lost if fasteners loosen. The wide tooth profile reduces stress concentration on individual teeth, distributing load more evenly across the gear mesh for improved longevity and quieter operation. This component is engineered for demanding conditions and works seamlessly with standard 5mm motor shafts found in contemporary brushless RC systems, from 1/10-scale buggies to larger displacement RC trucks and rock crawlers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Safe-D5 mean and why is it better than standard pinion gears? — The Safe-D5 bore design features a D-shaped hole that matches your motor shaft profile, preventing drive loss and brake failure if your set-screw backs out during extreme driving conditions. Standard pinion gears use round bores, which can slip if fasteners loosen. The Safe-D5 design is superior because it provides a positive mechanical lock that holds even if your set-screw comes loose, which is a critical safety advantage during competitive racing or aggressive bashing.
  • Is this pinion gear suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. This is a straightforward replacement component that any RC enthusiast can install with basic tools. If you're new to RC and you have an ARRMA vehicle, keeping a spare pinion gear like this in your toolkit is excellent practice and shows you're taking your hobby seriously. Installation is simple: slide it onto your 5mm motor shaft, secure it with the provided set-screw, and lock it in place with the E-clip.
  • What is the 34T specification and how does it affect my RC's performance? — The 34T designation means this pinion gear has 34 teeth. The tooth count directly affects your gear ratio, which in turn influences your vehicle's acceleration and top speed. A 34-tooth pinion is a popular all-round choice that balances snappy acceleration with reasonable top-end speed for most driving styles and terrain types. If you want faster acceleration, you'd choose a higher tooth count; for higher top speed, you'd go lower.
  • Will this pinion gear work with my ARRMA RC vehicle? — This gear is designed specifically for ARRMA vehicles using standard 5mm motor shafts with Mod1 pitch gears. Most modern ARRMA electric RC cars, buggies, and trucks use this configuration, but you should verify your vehicle's motor shaft diameter (5mm) and spur gear pitch (Mod1) before purchasing. If you're unsure, our team at RC Model Shop can help you confirm compatibility.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gear? — Pinion gear lifespan depends on driving frequency, intensity, and maintenance. Regular bashers and racers should inspect their pinion gear monthly and replace it if you notice chipped or worn teeth, or if it no longer meshes smoothly with the spur gear. Many competitive drivers keep several spares in their pit box to minimise downtime.
  • What tools do I need to install this pinion gear? — You'll need a hex key or Allen wrench to tighten the M4 set-screw, and you may need a small screwdriver or pinion removal tool to slide the gear onto the motor shaft. Most RC enthusiasts already have these basic tools, and pinion installation is one of the most straightforward maintenance tasks you can perform on an RC car.
