Technical Performance

The Traxxas Titan 550 Brushed Motor represents the pinnacle of brushed motor engineering for RC vehicles. At 550-size with a 21-turn brushed configuration, this motor delivers the torque characteristics necessary for serious crawling, rock-racing, and trail driving. The 30% longer armature compared to standard 540-size motors is the key engineering difference that gives the Titan its reputation for extreme monster torque. This extended design increases the moment arm of the magnetic forces acting on the armature, resulting in significantly higher rotational force at the output shaft—precisely what UK RC enthusiasts need when tackling steep inclines, thick vegetation, or rock-strewn terrain in their favourite crawling spots.

The motor is engineered to operate reliably at 14.4 volts, making it compatible with standard 4-cell LiPo battery configurations and traditional 12-volt NiMH packs found in most Traxxas RTR (ready to run) RC crawlers and trucks. The fan-cooled design ensures the motor can handle sustained high-load operation without thermal degradation, a critical feature for bashers and trail runners who demand consistent performance across long driving sessions. The brushed design means straightforward maintenance—brushes can be replaced without specialist tools, and the motor's proven architecture ensures predictable, linear power delivery that many experienced drivers prefer for precise throttle control on technical terrain.

Built to Traxxas's exacting quality standards, the TRX3975R uses quality copper windings, precision-engineered magnets, and durable commutator materials that resist arcing and extend motor life. The 550-size housing provides optimal thermal mass for heat dissipation, whilst the fan-cooled configuration actively removes heat from the motor case during operation. The reverse-rotation specification is critical for certain vehicle platforms where the motor orientation and drivetrain geometry require counter-clockwise rotation—always verify your model's requirements before installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What vehicles is the Traxxas Titan 550 21-turn reverse-rotation motor compatible with? — This motor is designed for Traxxas vehicles including E-Maxx, E-Revo, and TRX-4 crawlers. The reverse-rotation specification makes it essential for specific model configurations where motor orientation requires counter-clockwise rotation. Always verify your specific vehicle's motor requirements before purchase to ensure correct compatibility.
  • What is the difference between 21-turn and other motor configurations? — The turn count refers to the number of wire windings around the motor's armature core. Higher turn counts (like 21) provide more torque but lower top speed, making them ideal for rock crawling, trail driving, and heavy-duty pulling. Lower turn counts deliver higher speed but less torque. For crawlers and trail vehicles, 21-turn is the proven standard for maximum climbing power.
  • What battery does this Traxxas Titan motor need? — The motor is rated for 14.4 volts, which corresponds to 4-cell LiPo battery packs (nominally 14.4V when fully charged) or traditional 12-volt NiMH battery configurations used in many ready to run RC crawlers. Always use a quality charger designed for your specific battery type and follow Traxxas safety guidelines.
  • How does the 30% longer armature improve performance? — The extended armature design increases the lever arm of the magnetic forces, creating greater rotational force (torque) at the output shaft. This means improved hill-climbing ability, better traction in loose terrain, and more responsive acceleration—critical advantages for trail crawlers tackling steep inclines and technical obstacles.
  • Is this motor suitable for beginners? — Yes, brushed motors like the Titan 550 are excellent for beginners and casual RC enthusiasts. They're simpler to maintain than brushless systems, offer predictable power delivery, and don't require specialised ESC equipment. If you're new to RC driving in the UK, a brushed motor provides straightforward performance without steep learning curves.
  • What does fan-cooled mean and why does it matter? — Fan-cooled motors include an integrated cooling fan that rotates with the armature, actively drawing air across the motor case during operation. This keeps temperatures down during sustained high-load driving, extending motor lifespan and maintaining consistent power output. For marathon trail sessions or demanding crawling, this cooling system prevents thermal shutdown and ensures reliability.
  • Can I use this motor as a direct replacement in my existing RC vehicle? — If your vehicle originally used a reverse-rotation Titan 550 or equivalent motor, yes—the pre-fitted Bullet connectors make installation straightforward. However, verify that your vehicle specifically requires reverse rotation. Installing a reverse-rotation motor where forward rotation is expected will cause the vehicle to drive backwards.
  • What is the difference between brushed and brushless motors? — Brushed motors use physical carbon brushes and a commutator for switching, making them simpler and more affordable but requiring occasional maintenance. Brushless motors use electronic switching and run cooler with less maintenance, but cost more and require a brushless-compatible ESC. For UK RC enthusiasts prioritising reliability and ease of repair, brushed motors remain an excellent choice.
  • Is the Titan 550 suitable for racing or just bashing? — The Titan 550 excels at trail crawling, rock racing, and technical driving but isn't optimised for high-speed circuit racing. Its 21-turn configuration prioritises torque over top speed, making it perfect for natural terrain courses, crawling events, and weekend bashers who value climbing power and control over pure velocity.
  • What makes Traxxas motors reliable for UK RC enthusiasts? — Traxxas is an authorised, recognised brand with decades of RC engineering experience. Their motors undergo rigorous quality control, use quality materials, and are backed by comprehensive support. UK RC enthusiasts trust Traxxas because parts are readily available, genuine stock is guaranteed, and performance is proven across countless vehicles worldwide.
