Overview

The Traxxas Gear, 23-T pinion (1.0 metric pitch) (fits 5mm shaft) with set screw (TRX6481X) is an essential performance tuning component for RC enthusiasts across the UK who want to optimise their Traxxas models. This precision-engineered pinion gear allows you to fine-tune the performance characteristics of your RC car, helping you achieve the perfect balance between acceleration and top speed for your specific running conditions. Whether you're a competitive racer, a weekend basher, or someone new to the world of RC cars UK, understanding and adjusting your gearing setup is a fundamental skill that can dramatically improve your driving experience.

Traxxas pinion gears are designed with precision engineering to ensure reliable performance and longevity. The 23-tooth configuration offers a specific gear ratio that works in conjunction with your spur gear to determine how quickly your motor accelerates and the maximum speed your brushless RC car can achieve. This particular pinion features a 1.0 metric pitch and is engineered to fit 5mm motor shafts, making it compatible with a wide range of Traxxas models including the WideMaxx Monster Truck, XRT VXL-8S, XRT Ultimate, and Funco Motorsports Pro Scale vehicles. The included set screw ensures secure installation and reliable power transmission during intense driving sessions.

For RC enthusiasts looking to customise their setup, changing gear ratios is one of the most effective and affordable ways to tailor your model's performance. Whether you need more acceleration for technical courses or prefer higher top speed for open track driving, the right pinion gear can make all the difference. This 23-tooth pinion represents a popular mid-range tooth count that provides balanced performance across diverse running conditions.

Key Features

  • 23-Tooth Configuration — This tooth count delivers a balanced gear ratio that works well across a variety of running conditions, allowing you to fine-tune acceleration and top speed without sacrificing overall performance or reliability.
  • 1.0 Metric Pitch — The 1.0 metric pitch specification ensures compatibility with other Traxxas components designed to the same standard, guaranteeing smooth meshing with steel spur gears and efficient power transmission from your brushless motor.
  • 5mm Shaft Bore — The 5mm bore fits standard Traxxas motor shafts, making this pinion compatible with a broad range of Traxxas RC cars and trucks, from ready-to-run models to custom builds.
  • Set Screw Included — The supplied set screw provides a secure mechanical connection between the pinion and motor shaft, preventing slippage during acceleration and ensuring consistent power delivery throughout your driving session.
  • Steel Spur Gear Compatibility — Designed specifically for use with steel spur gears, this pinion ensures reliable engagement and durability, protecting both components from premature wear and maintaining optimal gear mesh alignment.
  • Performance Tuning Capability — By selecting the appropriate pinion tooth count, you can modify your vehicle's gear ratio to optimise acceleration, top speed, and overall handling characteristics for your preferred driving style and track conditions.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas 23-T pinion gear represents precision engineering designed to meet the demands of competitive and recreational RC car enthusiasts throughout the UK. This component is manufactured to exacting standards to ensure proper tooth profile geometry, allowing for smooth meshing with your steel spur gear and efficient power transmission from your brushless motor. The 1.0 metric pitch specification is a universally recognised standard in RC gearing, ensuring compatibility across multiple Traxxas model lines and allowing you to easily swap pinions when tuning your setup. The 5mm shaft bore is engineered to tolerance specifications that provide a secure fit without excessive play, critical for maintaining consistent gear mesh during acceleration, cornering, and braking. By selecting the correct pinion tooth count in combination with your spur gear, you can precisely control your vehicle's final gear ratio, which directly impacts both acceleration response and top speed capability. The set screw mechanism provides a mechanical lock that prevents the pinion from rotating on the motor shaft, ensuring reliable power delivery even during aggressive driving sessions with sudden acceleration and deceleration.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why would I need to change it on my RC car? — A pinion gear is a small gear mounted on your motor shaft that meshes with a larger spur gear to create your final drive ratio. By changing the pinion tooth count, you can adjust your vehicle's acceleration and top speed characteristics. A smaller pinion (fewer teeth) creates a higher final gear ratio, providing faster acceleration but lower top speed, whilst a larger pinion (more teeth) reduces acceleration but increases top speed potential. The 23-tooth size offers a balanced middle ground suitable for varied running conditions.
  • Is this 23-tooth pinion suitable for beginners? — Yes, the 23-tooth pinion is an excellent choice for beginners and experienced drivers alike. It provides balanced performance across different driving conditions, making it ideal if you're new to gearing concepts. As you develop your skills and preferences, you can experiment with different tooth counts to optimise your specific model's performance.
  • Which Traxxas models are compatible with the TRX6481X pinion? — This pinion is compatible with multiple Traxxas models including the WideMaxx Monster Truck (red, rock n roll, and green variants), XRT VXL-8S (blue, orange, black, and green variants), XRT Ultimate (green and blue variants), and Funco Motorsports Pro Scale 8S 2WD Electric Sand Car (orange, green, red, and blue variants). Always consult your specific model's owner's manual to confirm recommended gearing options.
  • Can I use this pinion with plastic spur gears? — No, this pinion is designed specifically for use only with steel spur gears. Steel spur gears provide superior durability and longevity compared to plastic alternatives, and they mesh properly with this pinion's tooth profile geometry. Using this pinion with plastic spur gears may result in poor engagement and premature component failure.
  • How do I install the pinion gear on my motor shaft? — The pinion slides onto your 5mm motor shaft and is secured using the included set screw. Simply align the pinion bore with the shaft, slide it on, and tighten the set screw firmly to lock it in place. Please consult your model's owner's manual for detailed installation instructions and recommended set screw torque specifications.
  • Will changing my pinion gear affect my brushless motor performance? — Changing your pinion gear ratio will affect how your motor performs, but not the motor itself. A higher final gear ratio (from using a smaller pinion) will cause your motor to turn faster but with less torque, whilst a lower ratio (from using a larger pinion) will reduce motor speed but increase torque. Always ensure your ESC and battery system can handle the resulting motor load.
