Overview

The Team Losi Racing Ring and Pinion, Composite (Center Diff Only): 22X-4 represents a significant upgrade path for owners of compatible 1/10 scale 4WD buggies in the UK and beyond. This is a premium replacement drivetrain component designed specifically for racers and enthusiasts who want to optimise their RC buggy's performance through weight reduction and improved handling characteristics. Whether you're running a TLR-1265 22X-4 2.0 AC, TLR-1264 22X-4 2.0 DC, or TLR03026 22X-4 ELITE 4X4 buggy, these composite gears offer a genuine performance advantage that directly translates to faster lap times and superior corner speed on the track.

If you're serious about competitive RC racing or simply want your buggy to perform at its absolute best, upgrading to these composite ring and pinion gears is a proven way to gain an edge. The engineering behind these components is backed by Team Losi Racing's decades of racing heritage, ensuring that every component meets the exacting standards required by serious racers. This is not a beginner modification—it's a targeted performance upgrade for those who understand the relationship between weight distribution and chassis dynamics.

RC car UK enthusiasts and competitors recognise the importance of lightweight drivetrain components. By removing significant weight from the centre of your buggy's chassis, you fundamentally change how the vehicle behaves in corners, allowing it to carry more speed and maintain better grip. This is especially valuable on technical courses where weight transfer and chassis stability determine winners from runners-up.

Key Features

  • High Impact Composite Construction — Moulded from a specially formulated high impact composite material, these gears deliver exceptional durability whilst maintaining the weight savings that make them valuable for racing. The composite material is engineered to withstand the stresses of competitive driving without the brittleness that plagued earlier plastic gear designs.
  • Significant Weight Reduction — Each ring and pinion set removes 11 grams from the drivetrain, meaning if you upgrade both front and rear gears, you'll eliminate 22 grams from your buggy's overall weight. This substantial reduction from the centre of the chassis dramatically improves weight distribution and allows the chassis to stay flatter through corners.
  • Improved Corner Speed and Handling — With 22 grams removed from the drivetrain, the lighter gears allow your chassis to carry more corner speed and maintain better stability. Less weight in the middle of the vehicle means lower polar moment of inertia, enabling quicker directional changes and more predictable handling on demanding racing circuits.
  • Center Differential Compatibility — These gears are specifically designed for centre differential operation only. This critical specification ensures you're using the correct component for your drivetrain configuration and achieving optimal performance characteristics when run in the intended setup.
  • Included Hardware and Shims — The package includes M2.5 x 10mm flat head screws (rather than the standard M2.5 x 8mm screws from the kit) plus two 10x14x0.1mm shims for proper gear and bearing positioning on the gear side, ensuring correct installation and reliable operation.

Technical Performance

These composite ring and pinion gears represent the pinnacle of aftermarket drivetrain optimisation for 22X-4 platform buggies. The specially formulated high impact composite material delivers a superior strength-to-weight ratio compared to stock steel gears, with the added benefit of absorbing vibration and reducing drivetrain noise without sacrificing durability. Each ring and pinion set has been engineered to maintain precise tolerances and tooth engagement, critical factors that determine acceleration responsiveness, top speed efficiency, and overall drivetrain reliability under racing conditions. The 11-gram weight reduction per set is not merely a specification—it represents a fundamental shift in vehicle dynamics. In 1/10 scale racing, where millimetres and grams directly correlate to lap time improvements, removing 22 grams from the drivetrain when upgrading both front and rear creates a measurable performance benefit. The lighter gears reduce the vehicle's rotational inertia, allowing the buggy to respond more quickly to driver inputs and maintain superior speed through technical sections. The inclusion of specific M2.5 x 10mm flat head screws and dual 10x14x0.1mm shims demonstrates Team Losi Racing's attention to detail—these components ensure proper gear mesh alignment and bearing support, preventing premature wear and maintaining peak performance throughout an entire race season. Installation requires attention to detail, but the engineering is straightforward for experienced RC racers familiar with drivetrain maintenance.

  • M2.5 x 10mm flat head screws (4x)
  • Two 10x14x0.1mm shims

What You Need to Complete

  • A compatible Team Losi Racing 22X-4 buggy platform (TLR-1265 AC, TLR-1264 DC, or TLR03026 ELITE)
  • Standard RC tools including hex drivers and screwdrivers for installation

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will these composite gears significantly improve my buggy's performance? — Yes, the 11-gram weight reduction per set (22 grams if upgrading both front and rear) creates a measurable performance improvement by reducing the vehicle's rotational inertia and allowing it to carry more corner speed. The lighter gears help the chassis stay flatter and more stable through technical sections, which directly translates to faster lap times on the track.
  • Can I run these gears with a slipper clutch? — No, these gears are designed for centre differential operation only. Using them with a slipper clutch will likely result in gear failure, as the composite material is not engineered to handle the load characteristics of slipper clutch setups. Stick to centre differential configurations only.
  • What are the installation requirements for these gears? — Installation requires standard RC tools and mechanical knowledge. The package includes M2.5 x 10mm flat head screws and two 10x14x0.1mm shims that must be properly positioned between the gear and bearing on the gear side. Follow your buggy's manual for detailed installation procedures to ensure correct gear mesh and bearing support.
  • How much weight will I actually save by upgrading to these composite gears? — Each ring and pinion set removes 11 grams from your drivetrain. If you upgrade both the front and rear gears, you'll eliminate 22 grams total from your buggy's chassis, a significant reduction that improves weight distribution and handling characteristics.
  • Are these gears durable enough for competitive racing? — Yes, the specially formulated high impact composite material is engineered for durability whilst maintaining the weight savings that make them valuable. These gears are designed for serious racers and have been proven in competitive environments. The composite material absorbs vibration and resists the brittleness of earlier plastic designs, making them reliable for season-long racing use.
  • Which buggies are these gears compatible with? — These gears are designed for Team Losi Racing 22X-4 platform buggies, including the TLR-1265 1/10 22X-4 2.0 AC 4WD Buggy, TLR-1264 1/10 22X-4 2.0 DC 4WD Buggy, and TLR03026 1/10 22X-4 ELITE 4X4 Buggy.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — This product is designed for experienced RC racers and enthusiasts who understand drivetrain components and have experience with mechanical modifications. While installation is straightforward, this is an upgrade component rather than a beginner-level purchase. If you're new to RC, focus on learning to drive and maintain your buggy before investing in performance upgrades.
