Every Thunderbird 9A comes backed by a full one-year factory warranty and the company that set the standard for customer service in the hobby industry. You don't have to settle for poor quality, unknown-origin ESCs anymore. Castle Creations brings consistent quality and proven design at a price that won't disappoint, all manufactured in the USA. When you choose the Thunderbird 9A, you're choosing an ESC from a company that understands what RC pilots need.

Key Features

  • Battery Eliminator Circuit (BEC) — The integrated BEC eliminates the need for a separate receiver battery, simplifying your aircraft setup and reducing overall weight. This is particularly valuable in lightweight RC flight models where every gram counts towards performance and flight time.
  • Automatic LiPo Detection and Cutoff — Right out of the box, the Thunderbird 9A automatically detects LiPo battery chemistry and applies appropriate cutoff protection. This safeguards your battery from over-discharge damage and extends its lifespan, all without any programming from you. You can also change this setting to fly NiCad or NiMH packs if preferred.
  • Low-Torque Soft Start Protection — The soft-start feature protects gearboxes and belt drives from sudden shock loads when the ESC powers up. This extends the life of mechanical components and ensures a smooth, controlled power delivery every single time.
  • Safe Power On Design — The power-on sequence is engineered to be safe and predictable, preventing unexpected motor movements that could damage your aircraft or injure bystanders during setup.
  • Smooth Reverse Exponential Throttle — The throttle curve is carefully calibrated to provide smooth, predictable control throughout the entire stick travel, whether flying forward, hovering, or in reverse. This responsiveness is essential for precision flying and aerobatic manoeuvres.
  • Self-Calibrating Endpoints — The ESC automatically learns your transmitter's stick range and maximises usable stick travel, eliminating the need for manual calibration and ensuring you get full control authority from your radio system.
  • Audible Arming Signal — A clear audible tone confirms when the ESC is armed and ready to fly, providing essential audio feedback so you know the system is live before spinning up the motor.
  • Auto Motor Cut-Off with Reset — If the ESC detects a problem or loses signal, it will cut motor power automatically. The reset function allows you to regain control without having to power cycle the entire aircraft.
  • Auto Shut-Down When Signal is Lost — Should your radio signal drop, the ESC automatically shuts down the motor to prevent a runaway aircraft, protecting both your model and anyone nearby.
  • Microprocessor Controlled — Advanced microprocessor technology monitors and controls every aspect of the ESC's operation, delivering intelligent protection, smooth throttle response and reliable performance in all flying conditions.
  • Tough Surface-Mount Construction — The compact board features rugged surface-mount components and construction that can withstand the vibrations and impacts common in RC flight. The small form factor makes it ideal for weight-sensitive applications.
  • Simple Setup with No Complicated Switches or Wiring — Unlike many flight ESCs, the Thunderbird 9A doesn't require a maze of DIP switches or confusing configuration jumpers. The straightforward design means you can get airborne quickly without fussing over complex setup procedures.

Technical Performance

The Castle Creations Thunderbird 9A Flight ESC represents a carefully engineered balance between simplicity, safety and performance. Measuring just 25.9mm in length, 17.0mm in width and 8.1mm in height, this ESC is remarkably compact—ideal for fitting into tight spaces in lightweight RC flight models where space is at a premium. At only 8 grams, the weight penalty is minimal, making it perfect for applications where every fraction of a gram affects climb rate, agility and overall flight characteristics. The ESC handles a continuous maximum current of 9A, making it suitable for small brushed or brushless motors in RC aeroplanes, trainers, and other lightweight aircraft. With an input voltage rating of 15V maximum, the controller supports single and multiple-cell LiPo packs, as well as NiCad and NiMH battery chemistry when configured appropriately. The microprocessor-controlled design ensures intelligent power management, smooth throttle delivery and rapid response to stick inputs. Forward and braking functions give you precise control over motor behaviour, whether you're executing smooth transitions or performing sharp aerobatic manoeuvres. The BEC output eliminates the need for a separate receiver battery pack, reducing overall system weight and complexity—a significant advantage in RC flight models where weight directly impacts performance. Build quality is evident in the surface-mount construction, which uses robust components designed to withstand the vibrations inherent in powered flight and the occasional hard landing.
