Key Features

  • Dual-colour pack — This pack includes one metre of red heat shrink and one metre of black heat shrink, allowing you to colour-code your connections and follow standard polarity conventions in your RC builds, making circuit tracing and troubleshooting significantly easier.
  • 15mm nominal diameter — The tubing is sized to slip comfortably over 15mm diameter wire, making it ideal for protecting large gauge silicone wire, heavy-duty battery connectors, and substantial cable bundles commonly found in high-powered RC systems.
  • Flexible construction — The tubing remains flexible even when shrunk, allowing you to route it around corners and through tight spaces in your RC chassis without cracking or becoming rigid, which is essential for practical RC applications.
  • Flame retardant properties — The material is formulated to be flame retardant, providing an extra safety margin when working with high-current electrical systems in your RC vehicles, and it produces low smoke if accidentally exposed to flame.
  • Wide operating temperature range — From -45°C to 125°C, this heat shrink maintains its integrity across extreme conditions, whether you're running your RC buggy in winter conditions or dealing with heat generated by high-performance brushless motors and ESCs.
  • Professional mechanical protection — Beyond insulation, heat shrink tubing provides genuine mechanical protection to wire connections and terminals, preventing abrasion damage and maintaining connection integrity even in off-road RC bashing scenarios.
  • Precise 3:1 shrink ratio — The tubing shrinks to approximately one-third of its expanded diameter (from 18mm down to 6mm), ensuring a tight, professional finish that doesn't leave excess material bunching up at connection points.

Technical Performance

The LOGIC Heat Shrink 15mm tubing is engineered to professional standards required by RC hobbyists working with serious electrical systems. The un-shrunk expanded diameter of 18mm allows the tubing to slip freely over 15mm diameter wire and connectors before heat is applied. When heated to the activation temperature of 125°C, the tubing undergoes a controlled 3:1 shrinkage, contracting to a recovered diameter of approximately 6mm. This precise engineering ensures consistent results across all applications — whether you're protecting XT90 battery connectors on your RC truck, bundling silicone power cables on a brushless RC car, or insulating multiple wire connections on an RC aircraft electrical system. The lay flat width of 28.3mm provides a reference dimension for understanding how the tubing will appear when not yet shrunk. The material's flexibility, even after shrinking, means connections remain protected without compromising the mechanical integrity of your RC builds. The flame retardant formulation and low-smoke characteristics make this tubing suitable for use in enclosed battery compartments and tight spaces where safety is paramount. The wide operating temperature range from -45°C to 125°C ensures reliable performance whether you're driving your RC buggy through winter British conditions or dealing with sustained heat from high-performance brushless motors generating significant thermal output during competition or intensive bashing sessions.

How to Use Heat Shrink Tubing

Using heat shrink tubing correctly is straightforward but requires proper technique. First, slide the heat shrink tubing onto your wire or connector before soldering or crimping — it must go on before the connection is made. Once your connection is complete and cool, position the tubing to cover the joint you wish to protect. Apply heat using a heat gun, soldering iron, or lighter (though a heat gun provides the most controlled results), slowly rotating the tubing to ensure even heating. The tubing will begin to shrink as it reaches its activation temperature of 125°C, contracting smoothly around the connection. Avoid overheating, which can damage the insulation or your components. Once fully shrunk, the tubing will have created a tight, protective seal. For RC applications involving high-current connections, always allow the tubing to cool completely before handling to ensure the seal has fully set.

Why Size Matters in Heat Shrink Selection

Selecting the correct heat shrink size is crucial for proper protection and professional results in RC electrical work. The LOGIC RC system specifies heat shrink sizes as their nominal expanded dimensions — so this 15mm tubing has an internal diameter of approximately 18mm when expanded, allowing it to comfortably accommodate wire up to 15mm diameter. The inside diameter is approximately 20% larger than the nominal size, providing easy fitting without forcing the tubing or damaging wires. When fully shrunk, the same tube recovers to around 6mm internal diameter. Understanding these dimensions means you can select the correct size for any RC application. Too small a size won't fit over your wire or connectors; too large and you'll have excess material that creates a bulky, unprofessional-looking finish. This 15mm size is specifically suited to heavy-gauge silicone wire, large battery connectors, and substantial cable bundles commonly found in high-powered RC systems, making it an essential stock item for anyone building or repairing performance RC vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What temperature does LOGIC heat shrink activate at? — LOGIC heat shrink tubing activates and begins contracting at 125°C. A heat gun is the recommended tool for even, controlled heating, though a soldering iron or lighter can also be used. Always apply heat gradually and rotate the tubing for uniform shrinkage.
  • Can I use this heat shrink on battery connectors? — Yes, absolutely. This 15mm size is ideal for protecting large battery connectors like XT90, AS150, and similar heavy-duty connectors commonly used on high-capacity RC LiPo batteries and brushless RC systems. The heat shrink provides both electrical insulation and mechanical protection.
  • What's the difference between nominal, expanded and shrunk diameters? — The nominal size (15mm in this case) refers to the pre-shrunk diameter of the wire the tubing is designed to fit over. The expanded diameter when you receive it is approximately 18mm (about 20% larger for easy fitting). When heated, it shrinks to approximately 6mm. This engineering allows the tubing to slide easily onto wire before connection, then provide a tight seal after shrinking.
  • Is this tubing suitable for RC helicopter or RC aircraft applications? — Yes, LOGIC heat shrink is suitable for aircraft and helicopter wiring where space is often limited. The flexibility of the material even when shrunk makes it ideal for routing through tight cable runs in RC aircraft fuselages and rotor systems. The low-smoke characteristic is also beneficial in enclosed spaces.
  • How do I know which heat shrink size I need? — LOGIC provides a helpful sizing guide: measure your wire or connector diameter and select heat shrink tubing with a nominal expanded size slightly larger than that measurement. For 15mm diameter wires or connectors, this 15mm tubing is the correct choice. RC Model Shop stocks sizes from 1.5mm through 90mm to cover all possible applications.
  • Can I use heat shrink tubing in wet conditions? — Once fully shrunk and cooled, heat shrink tubing provides reliable insulation and protection even in wet conditions, making it suitable for waterproof RC boats and amphibious RC vehicles. However, allow tubing to fully cool and set before exposing it to moisture.
  • What is the shrink ratio of this tubing? — LOGIC heat shrink features approximately a 3:1 shrink ratio, meaning the tubing shrinks to roughly one-third of its expanded diameter. This 15mm tubing shrinks from approximately 18mm expanded down to 6mm recovered diameter, providing a neat, tight finish.
  • Is this heat shrink flame retardant? — Yes, LOGIC heat shrink tubing is formulated to be flame retardant and produces low smoke if exposed to flame, making it safer for use in tight battery compartments and other enclosed spaces within your RC models.
