Key Features

  • 42T Brush Configuration — The 42-tooth design of this brushed motor determines its torque characteristics and power delivery curve, making it suitable for applications requiring moderate to higher torque output rather than maximum speed, which is essential for stability and control in various RC driving conditions.
  • 280 Motor Size — The 280 size designation refers to the physical dimensions of the motor can, which affects its overall performance envelope and cooling characteristics, ensuring the motor maintains consistent performance during extended running sessions without thermal issues.
  • Brushed Motor Technology — Brushed motors feature commutator brushes that deliver power to the windings, providing straightforward operation with minimal electronic complexity, making them ideal for hobbyists who prefer simplicity and ease of maintenance over cutting-edge brushless technology.
  • Reliable Spektrum Quality — As part of the Spektrum Firma JR's Choice range, this motor benefits from the manufacturer's reputation for building dependable RC components that perform consistently across different weather conditions and driving scenarios typical of UK RC enthusiasts.
  • Easy Installation — This motor is designed as a straightforward bolt-in component that integrates with standard RC car motor mounts, allowing you to upgrade or repair your vehicle without requiring specialist tools or expertise.

Technical Performance

The SPM Firma JR's Choice 42T 280 Brushed Motor represents practical engineering designed around real-world RC car requirements. The 280 motor size combined with the 42T brush count creates a motor specifically optimised for applications where reliability and consistent torque delivery matter more than absolute top-end speed. Brushed motors operate using a commutator and brush assembly that transfers electrical current to the motor windings, creating rotational force that drives your RC vehicle forward. This proven technology has been used successfully in countless RC cars, buggies, and trucks across the UK hobby scene for decades, and Spektrum's implementation of this design reflects the manufacturer's commitment to producing components that work reliably in real-world conditions. The motor's engineering ensures smooth power delivery across its operating range, reducing vibration and noise compared to poorly balanced alternatives. The 280 size provides adequate cooling surface area to dissipate heat generated during normal operation, which means you can run this motor for extended periods without worrying about thermal damage. Whether you're driving in British summer conditions or through typical UK weather, the Firma JR's Choice 42T 280 maintains consistent performance without the electronic complications associated with brushless systems. This makes it particularly attractive for restoration projects, budget-conscious builders, and anyone who values simplicity and ease of maintenance in their RC setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Spektrum Firma JR's Choice 42T 280 brushed motor suitable for beginners? — Yes, this brushed motor is an excellent choice for RC beginners and hobbyists. Brushed motors are significantly simpler to understand and maintain than brushless alternatives, requiring no electronic speed controller configuration or complex setup procedures. If you're new to RC cars in the UK, a brushed motor system is more forgiving and easier to troubleshoot, making it perfect for learning the fundamentals of RC mechanics.
  • What type of RC cars can I use this motor with? — The 42T 280 brushed motor is designed for hobby-grade RC cars and trucks. Its moderate torque output makes it suitable for various applications including crawler-style vehicles, touring cars, and general-purpose RC cars. The exact compatibility depends on your vehicle's motor mount design and the transmission system of your particular RC model, so you should verify that your vehicle's motor mounts accept a 280-size motor before purchasing.
  • Do I need an ESC to run this brushed motor? — Yes, any brushed motor requires an electronic speed controller (ESC) to regulate the power flowing from your battery to the motor. The ESC acts as the intermediary between your radio receiver and the motor, allowing you to control speed and direction. You'll need to select an ESC rated for your battery voltage and the current requirements of your specific vehicle setup.
  • What battery voltage does this motor require? — Brushed motors like the Firma JR's Choice 42T 280 can operate across a range of battery voltages depending on your ESC and vehicle setup. Common RC car battery voltages include 2S LiPo (7.4V), 3S LiPo (11.1V), and older NiMH battery packs. The appropriate voltage for your setup depends on your ESC specifications and vehicle design. Check your vehicle's manual or ESC documentation to determine the correct battery voltage for your particular application.
  • How does brushed motor maintenance compare to brushless? — Brushed motors require periodic maintenance of the brushes and commutator, which gradually wear during use and may eventually need replacement. However, this maintenance is straightforward and requires only basic tools. Many hobbyists appreciate the simplicity of brushed motor maintenance compared to the electronic complexity of brushless systems. If you enjoy hands-on maintenance and prefer mechanical simplicity, brushed motors are ideal for your RC hobby in the UK.
