Overview

The Tamiya Plasma Edge II Buggy (TT-02B) is a brilliant shaft-driven 4WD off-road racer that combines the proven reliability of Tamiya's engineering with an exciting, contemporary design. This 1/10 scale RC car UK enthusiasts have trusted for years offers a perfect balance between ease of assembly and genuine performance capability, making it an excellent choice whether you're new to RC hobby cars or looking for a dependable basher for club-level fun. The Plasma Edge II represents an updated interpretation of the classic Plasma Edge design, featuring new stickers and a tweaked body design that gives it a distinctly modern appearance on the track or in your garden.

Built on the dedicated TT-02B chassis, this ready-to-assemble kit brings together proven off-road engineering with practical features that prioritise both durability and maintainability. Tamiya's reputation for straightforward assembly is evident throughout, with identical left and right suspension arms and uprights that make building and maintaining this RC buggy hassle-free. The combination of sealed gearboxes, independent suspension with long arms, CVA oil shock units and protective receiver casing means you get a vehicle capable of withstanding regular bashing while remaining approachable for learners and genuinely satisfying for experienced RC enthusiasts.

If you're searching for an off-road RC car that won't let you down, delivers predictable handling, and gives you plenty of upgrade and customisation options, the Tamiya Plasma Edge II TT-02B is a superb investment. The shaft-driven 4WD drivetrain offers assured traction across varied terrain, whilst the polycarbonate body and rear wing arrive ready for your own paint scheme, allowing you to create a truly personal RC machine.

Key Features

  • Shaft-driven 4WD system — This proven drivetrain delivers predictable traction and reliable power delivery across off-road terrain, giving you the confidence to push harder whilst maintaining control in loose conditions. The shaft-driven approach also means fewer moving parts exposed to dirt, enhancing durability on challenging tracks.
  • Sealed front and rear gearboxes with 4-bevel differentials — Dust and debris cannot penetrate the sealed gearbox housings, keeping your RC buggy running smoothly over extended periods. The 4-bevel differentials ensure smooth operation when cornering and accelerating, providing consistent handling characteristics that make this RC car predictable and fun to drive.
  • Fully independent 4-wheel double wishbone suspension — Long suspension arms combined with white CVA oil shock units provide excellent damping and consistent traction regardless of terrain. This suspension geometry absorbs bumps effectively whilst keeping all four tyres planted, which is essential for maintaining speed and control through jumps and over uneven ground.
  • Skid-shaped TT-02B frame — The bathtub-type chassis frame is specifically engineered for off-road performance, offering excellent ground clearance and durability. The low centre of gravity design ensures stable handling and predictable weight transfer during cornering, making this RC buggy responsive to throttle and steering inputs.
  • Clear polycarbonate body and rear wing — The lightweight shell arrives unpainted, allowing you to apply your own colour scheme and personalise your RC car. The rear wing isn't just aesthetic; it provides additional stability at higher speeds and enhances the racy appearance that makes the Plasma Edge II distinctive.
  • Fluorescent yellow star dish wheels and white CVA oil shocks — These striking components arrive pre-fitted and immediately give your RC buggy a professional, purposeful appearance. The star dish wheel design is both functional and visually distinctive, whilst the white shock bodies provide an attractive contrast to the rest of the chassis.
  • Selectable gear ratios via optional pinion gears — Three separately-sold pinion gear options allow you to adjust the gear ratio to match your driving conditions and personal preferences. Whether you're chasing speed on a smooth track or prioritising torque and control in loose conditions, you can tailor the setup to suit your needs without investing in an entirely new transmission.
  • Protected receiver case and motor cover — These protective covers shield your radio receiver and motor from dirt and debris thrown up during driving, reducing maintenance requirements and extending the lifespan of your electronic components. This practical engineering detail demonstrates Tamiya's commitment to creating RC cars that are genuinely durable.
  • Assembly kit format with straightforward construction — The TT-02B chassis retains the TT-02's excellent drivability and ease of assembly, meaning you'll enjoy a rewarding build experience even if you're new to RC hobby cars. Identical suspension components on both sides of the car further simplify the assembly process, whilst the removable top (secured by just a few screws) makes maintenance a breeze when you need to access the receiver or make adjustments.
  • Motor cooling ducts and Type 540 brushed motor — Integrated cooling ducts help dissipate heat during extended run sessions, protecting your motor from thermal stress. The included RS-540 Torque-Tuned Motor provides dependable, linear power delivery suitable for both competitive racing and casual bashing.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya Plasma Edge II Buggy represents a mature platform that prioritises reliability and controllability alongside genuine performance. At 1/10 scale, the model strikes an ideal balance between portability and durability, with dimensions of 370mm length, 250mm width and 160mm height providing a compact footprint that suits most venues whilst maintaining substantial structural strength. The wheelbase of 266mm combined with track widths of 217mm (front) and 208mm (rear) creates a stable stance that resists tipping during aggressive cornering and landing after jumps. The shaft-driven 4WD system employs sealed front and rear gearboxes housing 4-bevel differentials, delivering a gear ratio of 10.71:1 with the included pinion gear. This configuration provides smooth acceleration and strong hill-climbing ability whilst remaining approachable for drivers of varying skill levels. The fully independent double wishbone suspension uses long arms and CVA oil shock units to absorb impacts effectively, whilst 32mm x 82mm square spike tyres at the front and 41mm x 82mm rear tyres provide excellent grip on loose surfaces. The chassis frame itself is a bathtub-type design that offers superior rigidity and impact protection compared to simpler frame designs. Construction quality throughout is quintessentially Tamiya, with tight tolerances and precision-moulded components that ensure the finished RC car delivers predictable handling and exceptional durability. The three-piece steering tie-rod is proven in countless competitive environments, whilst the kit-included Type 540 brushed motor provides consistent power delivery without the complexity of brushless systems. You will need to source a 2-channel RC unit with electronic speed controller (sold separately), a compatible battery pack and charger, plus six AA/R6/UM3 batteries for your transmitter to complete this assembly kit and get your RC buggy ready to run.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Tamiya Plasma Edge II TT-02B suitable for beginners to RC hobby cars? — Yes, this is an excellent choice for newcomers to off-road RC. The assembly process is straightforward thanks to identical left and right suspension components and Tamiya's reputation for clear instructions. The sealed gearboxes and protected receiver case mean you'll spend less time maintaining and more time driving. The predictable handling characteristics make it easier to learn throttle and steering control compared to more aggressive setups. However, you will need to purchase a separate radio system, batteries and charger to get started.
  • What radio system and batteries does the Plasma Edge II need? — The kit requires a 2-channel R/C unit with electronic speed controller (sold separately). Battery requirements depend on your chosen ESC, but most modern 2S and 3S LiPo packs or equivalent NiMh batteries will work. You'll also need six AA/R6/UM3 alkaline batteries for your transmitter. We recommend consulting the specific ESC manual for battery compatibility details, or our team at RC Model Shop can advise you on suitable combinations.
  • Can I change the performance characteristics of this RC buggy? — Absolutely. Three separately-sold pinion gear options allow you to select from different gear ratios, letting you optimise for speed on smooth tracks or torque and control on loose terrain. Additionally, a wide range of aftermarket option parts are available to customise the chassis, from upgraded shock cartridges and springs to different tyre compounds and wheel designs. This platform has proven popular in the competitive RC scene precisely because of its upgrade potential.
  • How does the Plasma Edge II compare to other Tamiya buggies in the TT-02 family? — The TT-02B specifically adds longer suspension arms, CVA shock units and buggy-specific bumpers to the base TT-02 design, making it superior for off-road work. These enhancements give the TT-02B better ground clearance and more consistent damping across varied terrain. Whilst the TT-02 excels as a versatile platform suitable for multiple body styles, the TT-02B is purpose-built for off-road buggy racing, making it the better choice if off-road performance is your priority.
  • How long does the assembly take and what tools will I need? — Most builders complete the Plasma Edge II in 8-12 hours depending on experience level. You'll need basic hobby tools: a Phillips screwdriver, a small flathead screwdriver, a hex key set, and potentially a screwdriver specifically for polycarbonate body clips. Tamiya provides detailed illustrated instructions that guide you through each step. If you're unfamiliar with RC assembly, our team at RC Model Shop can recommend quality tool kits specifically designed for this purpose.
  • What is the motor included with this kit, and is it brushless? — The Plasma Edge II includes a Tamiya RS-540 Torque-Tuned Type 540 brushed motor, which is not brushless. This brushed motor provides excellent mid-range torque and linear power delivery, making it ideal for learning and recreational driving. If you prefer brushless performance, brushless motor and ESC upgrades are available as separately-sold option parts.
  • Will my completed Plasma Edge II be ready to run straight away? — Once you've assembled the kit, painted the body and installed your radio system and batteries, yes, your RC buggy will be ready to drive. However, many drivers appreciate taking time to fine-tune suspension settings and perhaps add bearing upgrades before their first outing. We recommend checking that all moving parts operate smoothly and that your radio system is properly bound before your first drive.
  • Is maintenance on the TT-02B genuinely straightforward? — Yes. The sealed gearboxes keep dirt out of critical drivetrain components, whilst the protective receiver case and motor cover shield electronics from dust and debris. The removable top (held by just a few screws) gives you quick access for basic maintenance without disassembling the entire chassis. Regular cleaning and occasional lubrication of moving parts will keep your RC buggy running smoothly for years.
