Overview

The Tamiya PS-58 Pearl Clear Polycarbonate Spray Paint is a specialist finishing product developed by Tamiya specifically for decorating transparent polycarbonate bodies used in RC car modelling. Whether you're building a competitive RC car in the UK or simply enjoying weekend bashing, this premium spray paint delivers professional results with its distinctive pearlescent finish that adds genuine depth and character to your polycarbonate body. Each 100ml can contains the exact amount of paint needed to complete a full body finishing job, making it an economical choice for RC enthusiasts of all experience levels.

This paint is engineered exclusively for use on polycarbonate RC car bodies and cannot be used on plastic model kits. The formulation has been carefully developed to ensure compatibility with the unique properties of polycarbonate materials, providing superior adhesion and durability compared to standard hobby paints. For RC car builders in the UK seeking authentic Tamiya quality and proven results, this pearl clear spray paint represents the gold standard in polycarbonate body finishing.

The PS-58 Pearl Clear finish is particularly prized by RC modellers who want their polycarbonate bodies to catch the light and stand out on the track or at the bash spot. Applied correctly from the inside of the body, it creates a professional-looking pearlescent sheen that enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of your RC car model.

Key Features

  • Polycarbonate-Specific Formula — This spray paint has been specially developed by Tamiya exclusively for transparent polycarbonate bodies, ensuring perfect adhesion and finish quality that cannot be achieved with standard plastic model paints. This specialised formulation is critical because polycarbonate has different surface properties than conventional plastics, and using the wrong paint can result in poor adhesion, clouding, or peeling.
  • 100ml Spray Can Size — Each can contains exactly 100ml of paint, which is the manufacturer's recommended amount for completing a full polycarbonate RC car body finish. This precise sizing means you get the right quantity without waste, and the can is sized perfectly for hand-held spray application at the correct distance from your body.
  • Pearl Clear Pearlescent Finish — The pearl clear lacquer provides a distinctive pearlescent effect that adds depth and visual interest to your polycarbonate body. Unlike flat or glossy finishes, the pearlescent quality catches light beautifully, making your RC car stand out both in photographs and on the track or at the bash spot.
  • Oil and Fuel Resistant — These paints are impervious to oil and fuels, making them completely safe for use on glow engine RC car bodies and gas-powered R/C vehicles. This fuel resistance means your paint finish will not degrade, discolour, or become sticky from exposure to nitro fuel or engine oils, ensuring your body looks fresh and professional for extended periods of use.
  • Inside Application Method — Designed to be applied from the inside of the polycarbonate body, keeping the can approximately 30cm from the surface. This inside-application approach protects the finished paint from scratches and minor impacts that occur during normal RC car operation, and it allows the transparent polycarbonate to act as a protective clear coat layer.
  • Multiple Coat Capable — After the initial coat cures, you can apply additional coats as necessary to build up colour depth and coverage. This flexible approach allows you to achieve exactly the finish intensity you desire, from subtle pearl effects with a single coat to rich, deep pearlescent finishes with multiple layers.
  • Brush Paint Compatible — Small details should be brush painted beforehand using Tamiya bottle paints for polycarbonate, allowing you to combine spray and brush techniques for complete body customisation and detailed work that spray application cannot achieve.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya PS-58 Pearl Clear demonstrates the engineering excellence that Tamiya is recognised for in the RC hobby market. The paint formulation delivers exceptional performance characteristics specifically engineered for polycarbonate substrates. At 100ml per can, this represents the optimal amount of material for complete body coverage on a standard RC car polycarbonate body shell. The pearl clear lacquer finish creates a sophisticated pearlescent effect that is considerably more visually striking than standard solid colours or plain clear coats, enhancing the overall presentation of your RC model. The paint's imperviousness to both oils and fuels means it maintains its finish integrity even on glow-engine powered RC cars that might experience fuel residue or oil exposure. The application technique — spraying from inside the body at approximately 30cm distance — is scientifically designed to provide even coverage whilst allowing the polycarbonate itself to provide a protective transparent layer over the finished paint work. Multiple coats can be applied after curing to achieve the desired depth of pearlescent effect, giving you complete control over the final aesthetic result. For RC car modellers in the UK using either electric or nitro-powered vehicles, this paint represents a professional-grade finishing solution that stands up to regular use and environmental exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Tamiya PS-58 Pearl Clear suitable for all RC car bodies? — No, this paint is specifically formulated for transparent polycarbonate bodies only and must never be used on plastic model kits or other plastic materials. Always confirm your RC car body is made from polycarbonate before applying this paint. Using it on the wrong substrate will result in poor adhesion and finish quality.
  • Can I use this paint on glow-powered RC engines? — Yes, one of the key advantages of Tamiya PS-58 Pearl Clear is that it is completely impervious to oil and fuels, making it entirely safe for use on glow engine RC car bodies and gas-powered R/C vehicles. The fuel-resistant formulation means your paint finish will not degrade, discolour, or become damaged by exposure to nitro fuel or engine oils.
  • How much paint coverage does one 100ml can provide? — Each 100ml can contains the manufacturer's recommended amount for completing a full polycarbonate RC car body finish. This represents one complete body shell application, though depending on body size and your desired colour intensity, you may need additional coats which would require a second can.
  • Should I apply this paint from the inside or outside of the polycarbonate body? — Tamiya specifically recommends applying this paint from the inside of the polycarbonate body, keeping the spray can approximately 30cm from the surface. This inside-application method protects the finished paint from scratches and impacts during normal RC car operation, and allows the transparent polycarbonate to serve as a protective clear coat layer over the paint.
  • How many coats should I apply? — Tamiya recommends applying an initial coat, allowing it to cure fully, then applying additional coats as necessary to achieve your desired colour intensity and pearlescent effect. The pearl clear finish becomes more visually striking and luminous with each additional coat, so experimentation will help you find your preferred result.
  • Can I use this paint on plastic model kits? — No, absolutely not. This paint is formulated exclusively for polycarbonate and will not adhere properly to plastic model kit materials. Using it on plastic kits will result in poor adhesion, peeling, and an unsatisfactory finish. Always use paints specifically designed for your substrate material.
  • What is the difference between PS-58 Pearl Clear and other Tamiya spray paints? — Tamiya PS-58 Pearl Clear is specifically formulated for polycarbonate RC car bodies, whereas other spray paints in Tamiya's range may be designed for different materials or applications. The polycarbonate-specific formulation ensures optimal adhesion and compatibility with polycarbonate's unique chemical and physical properties, whilst the pearl clear finish provides a distinctive pearlescent effect rather than solid colour or flat finish options.
