Technical Performance

The Associated Kimbrough 87 tooth 48 pitch Spur Gear represents the standard in precision RC drivetrain engineering for 1/10 scale vehicles. The 87-tooth configuration, when paired with appropriate 48DP pinion sizes, creates the gear ratios that Associated engineers have specifically calibrated for different driving styles and conditions across their model range. The 48 pitch (48DP) specification is an industry-standard tooth pitch that ensures perfect mesh compatibility with matching drivetrain components, maintaining the engineering integrity that keeps your RC car running smoothly through corners, over jumps, and across varied terrain. Manufactured to exacting tolerances, this spur gear is produced from quality materials that withstand the stresses of competitive racing and casual bashing alike. The precision of the tooth profile ensures minimal backlash in the drivetrain, which translates to more responsive handling, better traction control, and efficient power delivery from your brushless motor or brushed motor system. Whether you're running a 2WD buggy, a 4WD off-road truck, or a short course platform, this gear is engineered to provide reliable service throughout extended driving sessions. The AS9654 is a drop-in replacement that restores your drivetrain to factory specification, eliminating the slight performance variations that can develop as gears wear over time with use.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which Associated RC cars and models does the AS9654 87 tooth spur gear fit? — The Kimbrough 87T 48 pitch spur gear is compatible with a comprehensive range of Team Associated 1/10 scale platforms, including the B4, B4.1, T4, T4.1, T4.2, B44, B5, B5M, T5M, SC5M, B6, and B6D models. Before purchasing, check your vehicle's documentation to confirm your model uses a 48 pitch drivetrain and requires an 87 tooth spur gear, as different models and generations may use alternative tooth counts and pitch specifications.
  • Why is pitch specification important when choosing a spur gear for my RC buggy? — Pitch specification (in this case 48DP) defines the size and spacing of the gear teeth. Using the correct pitch is absolutely critical because the spur gear must mesh precisely with your pinion gear. Using an incorrect pitch will result in either the gears not meshing at all, or meshing improperly, which causes vibration, rapid wear, potential tooth breakage, and drivetrain damage. Always verify that your replacement gear matches the original pitch specification of your vehicle.
  • How often do I need to replace the spur gear on my Associated RC car? — Spur gear wear depends on driving frequency, driving style, and maintenance practices. Aggressive driving, racing, and frequent use cause faster wear than casual bashing. Regular inspection of your gear teeth for signs of damage, chipping, or excessive wear will help you identify when replacement is needed. Most serious RC racers and regular drivers keep spare spur gears on hand so they can perform quick drivetrain maintenance and swaps without interrupting their driving schedule.
  • Is the AS9654 a genuine manufacturer part or an aftermarket gear? — The AS9654 is a genuine Team Associated original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part, manufactured to the exact specifications and quality standards set by Associated. This means it's engineered to perform identically to the gear originally installed in your vehicle, with no compatibility issues or quality compromises that might occur with third-party alternatives.
  • What is the difference between 48 pitch and other pitch specifications in RC gears? — Pitch refers to the spacing and size of the gear teeth. Common pitch specifications in 1/10 scale RC cars include 32 pitch and 48 pitch, with 48 pitch being a finer tooth specification (smaller, more numerous teeth) than 32 pitch. The two pitches are completely incompatible — you cannot use a 48 pitch spur gear with a 32 pitch pinion or vice versa. Always use gears of matching pitch specifications as designed for your specific vehicle.
  • How do I know if my spur gear needs replacing? — Visible signs that replacement is needed include chipped or broken teeth, flat-topped teeth that show wear, stripped sections where teeth have worn smooth, or vibration and noise coming from the transmission area during operation. Additionally, if your RC car seems to have lost responsiveness or acceleration, a worn spur gear may be the cause as tooth damage reduces efficiency of power transfer from motor to wheels.
