Overview
The Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-51 Purple Anodised Aluminium is a specialist polycarbonate spray paint designed specifically for RC car bodies. This premium spray paint has been engineered by Tamiya to deliver professional-quality finishes on transparent polycarbonate (Lexan) bodies commonly used in RC car modelling across the UK and worldwide. Whether you're building a competition RC car, customising your weekend basher, or restoring a classic RC model, this purple anodised aluminium finish offers a stunning metallic sheen that genuinely replicates the appearance of real anodised aluminium components.
The distinctive purple anodised aluminium colour is perfect for RC enthusiasts who want their polycarbonate body to stand out on the track or the field. This spray paint is ideal for RC car UK hobbyists who demand professional results without compromise. The formula has been specifically developed to work with transparent polycarbonate materials, ensuring perfect adhesion and durability on Lexan bodies used in everything from 1/10 scale touring cars to larger scale RC vehicles. Each can contains exactly the right amount of paint to finish a complete RC car body, making it economical and efficient.
What sets this paint apart is its remarkable durability and shock resistance. Once applied, the paint forms a tough, flexible finish that won't peel or flake off, even when your RC car takes hard impacts during enthusiastic driving sessions. The paint is also impervious to oil and fuels, which makes it exceptionally suitable for gas-powered RC bodies, adding another dimension of versatility to this product. For RC model shop customers seeking reliability and professional aesthetics, this Tamiya spray paint represents outstanding value and performance.
Key Features
- Specialist Polycarbonate Formula — This paint has been developed exclusively for transparent polycarbonate (Lexan) bodies and will not work on standard plastic models, ensuring perfect compatibility and finish quality on your RC car body.
- Purple Anodised Aluminium Finish — The colour realistically reproduces the distinctive shiny metallic appearance of anodised aluminium parts, giving your RC body a professional, premium aesthetic that catches the eye.
- Highly Adhesive — The paint bonds excellently to polycarbonate material, creating a permanent finish that stays attached to your RC body through countless driving sessions.
- Shock-Resistant Formula — The flexible paint coating won't peel or flake off even when your RC car experiences impacts, jumps and collisions typical in RC car racing and bashing.
- Fuel and Oil Impervious — This paint is completely resistant to oils and fuels, making it perfectly safe for gas-powered RC car bodies and ensuring the finish remains pristine regardless of fuel exposure.
- Optimal Coverage — Each 100ml can contains precisely the right amount of paint to complete the finish on one full-size RC car body, eliminating waste and ensuring consistent results.
- Optional Black Undercoat Compatibility — After the paint dries, you can optionally apply a coat of Tamiya PS-5 Black underneath for an even sharper, more defined finish, though this step is not necessary as the paint delivers excellent shine without it.
- Professional Application Designed — The spray can is engineered for optimal atomisation and coverage when applied from approximately 30cm away, allowing both experienced modellers and enthusiasts to achieve excellent results.
Technical Performance
This Tamiya spray paint represents the pinnacle of polycarbonate finishing technology, engineered with precision to meet the demanding requirements of RC car modelling. The 100ml capacity is specifically calculated to provide complete coverage for a standard RC car body when applied correctly, with two coats recommended for optimal finish quality and colour depth. The paint's engineering emphasises both aesthetic excellence and practical durability, with a shock-resistant formulation that flexes slightly with the polycarbonate substrate, preventing the common problem of paint flaking that occurs with inferior products. The purple anodised aluminium colour is achieved through specialised pigmentation that creates a genuine metallic sheen, distinct from flat or standard colours. The paint's imperviousness to oil and fuel is a critical performance feature for gas-powered RC cars, as many standard paints will degrade or discolour when exposed to these substances. Application should be performed from the inside of the polycarbonate body, maintaining the recommended 30cm spray distance to achieve even coverage and professional atomisation. The paint cures to a hard, durable finish that provides lasting protection and aesthetic appeal, though curing time should be observed before handling or using the painted body. For detailed work on small areas, Tamiya bottle paints for polycarbonate should be used with a brush before spray application, ensuring clean lines and professional results throughout the body.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Tamiya PS-51 spray paint suitable for all RC car bodies? — No, this paint is specifically formulated for transparent polycarbonate (Lexan) bodies only. Never use this paint on standard plastic models, as it has been engineered exclusively for polycarbonate compatibility and will not adhere properly to other materials.
- Can I use this paint on gas-powered RC car bodies? — Yes, absolutely. This is one of the key advantages of this paint formulation. The paint is completely impervious to oils and fuels, making it ideal for gas-powered RC cars where standard paints might degrade or discolour.
- Do I need to apply a PS-5 Black undercoat? — No, this is entirely optional. The paint delivers sufficiently sharp and shiny results without a black undercoat, though applying one will create an even more defined and striking finish if you prefer maximum depth and contrast.
- How much paint do I need for my RC body? — Each 100ml can is the appropriate amount for finishing a complete standard RC car body. This is why Tamiya has specifically sized each can, ensuring you have exactly enough paint without waste.
- What's the best way to apply this spray paint? — Apply from the inside of the polycarbonate body, keeping the spray can approximately 30cm from the surface. Apply thin, even coats and apply a second coat after the first dries. Small detail work should be done beforehand using Tamiya bottle paints applied with a brush.
- How long does the paint take to cure? — The paint requires curing time before the finished body can be used, though specific curing times are not detailed in the manufacturer specifications. Allow adequate drying time between coats and before handling.
- Is this the same purple as other purple paints? — No, this PS-51 paint offers a distinctive purple anodised aluminium finish with a metallic sheen that replicates the appearance of actual anodised aluminium components, creating a more sophisticated and professional look than standard purple colours.
- Can I brush paint this instead of spraying? — This product is designed as a spray paint and should be applied using the spray can provided. For small detail areas, Tamiya bottle paints for polycarbonate are recommended for brush application.
