Overview

The Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-61 Metallic Orange is a specialist polycarbonate spray paint developed specifically for decorating transparent lexan bodies used in RC car modelling across the UK and beyond. Whether you're building a high-performance 1/10 scale RC car or customising an existing body shell, this premium spray paint delivers a stunning metallic orange finish with fine particle pigmentation that authentically recreates factory paint effects on polycarbonate bodies. RC enthusiasts in the UK who demand professional-quality results will appreciate the precision engineering and compatibility this paint offers.

This is not a general-purpose spray paint — it has been formulated exclusively for polycarbonate lexan bodies, the transparent shells used in modern RC car racing and bashers. The paint contains fine metallic particles suspended in a specialist formulation that bonds perfectly to polycarbonate without degrading or damaging the material. Each 100ml can contains the exact amount needed to finish one complete RC car body, making it economical and ensuring you won't have excess product left over.

What sets this Tamiya paint apart from standard acrylics and enamels is its durability and resistance to the harsh environment RC cars experience. These paints are impervious to oil and fuel, making them safe for use on both electric and nitro-powered RC bodies. When applied correctly from the inside of the transparent body shell, the metallic orange finish creates a striking visual effect that showcases the intricate details of your RC car's construction. For RC hobbyists in the UK seeking authentic, manufacturer-approved paint solutions, the Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-61 Metallic Orange is the industry standard choice.

Key Features

  • Specialist Polycarbonate Formula — This paint has been engineered specifically for transparent polycarbonate (lexan) bodies, ensuring perfect adhesion and colour consistency that standard spray paints cannot achieve on these materials, making it essential for serious RC car builders.
  • Fine Metallic Particles — The formulation includes high-quality metallic particles that create an authentic, professional-grade orange metallic finish with depth and lustre, accurately recreating genuine automotive paint effects on your RC body.
  • 100ml Can Size — Each spray can contains precisely 100ml of paint, which is the optimal amount for completing one full RC car body shell without waste, offering excellent value and convenience for hobbyists.
  • Oil and Fuel Resistant — The paint is impervious to oil and fuel contamination, making it completely safe for use on gas-powered nitro RC cars as well as electric models, with no degradation or colour fading regardless of your RC power source.
  • Interior Application Method — Designed to be applied from inside the transparent body shell rather than the outside, this application method protects the metallic finish and creates a stunning visual effect when viewing the completed RC car body.
  • Quick-Curing Formula — The paint cures rapidly, allowing you to apply multiple coats to build up colour depth and coverage, with each coat bonding perfectly to the previous layer for a professional finish.
  • Compatible with 1/10 Scale Models — Specifically formulated for popular 1/10 scale RC car bodies, making it the perfect choice for off-road buggies, touring cars, short-course trucks, and other mainstream RC vehicle types in this scale class.
  • Authentic Tamiya Quality — As a product from Tamiya, one of the world's most respected manufacturers in the RC hobby, this paint meets the highest standards of consistency, colour accuracy, and performance that serious hobbyists expect.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-61 Metallic Orange represents the pinnacle of specialist RC paint engineering. The formulation has been developed through years of expertise to provide perfect compatibility with polycarbonate body materials, which require a completely different chemical approach compared to painting plastic model kits or traditional paint applications. The 100ml spray can delivers a fine, consistent mist that allows for precise application from inside the body shell, maintaining control and avoiding overspray while ensuring even coverage across the entire transparent body. The metallic particle suspension in this paint is engineered to remain evenly distributed throughout the can, preventing settling and colour variation between applications. When applied according to Tamiya's recommended technique — holding the can approximately 30cm from the surface of the polycarbonate — the paint creates a uniform, professional-grade finish that showcases the metallic orange colour with exceptional depth. The fast-curing properties of this formulation allow builders to apply multiple coats to achieve the desired colour saturation and visual impact, with each subsequent coat adhering perfectly to the previous layer. The resistance to oil and fuel means that whether your RC car is powered by a nitro engine or electric motors, the paint will maintain its colour integrity and not degrade from contact with fuel residue or motor oils. This durability ensures your RC car body remains looking pristine throughout the racing season, resisting the wear and environmental exposure that RC cars endure during outdoor use in the UK and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint on plastic model kit bodies or painted RC car bodies? — No, this paint is formulated exclusively for transparent polycarbonate (lexan) bodies. Never use this paint on plastic models or pre-painted surfaces, as it is specifically designed to bond with polycarbonate material and will not adhere properly to other plastics or existing paint finishes.
  • How do I apply this paint to my RC car body? — The paint is applied from inside the transparent polycarbonate body shell, not from the outside. Hold the spray can approximately 30cm away from the interior surface of the body and apply light, even coats. Allow each coat to cure before applying the next coat if you require additional colour coverage or depth. This inside-application method ensures the metallic finish is protected and creates a striking visual effect through the transparent body.
  • Is this paint suitable for both electric and nitro-powered RC cars? — Yes, this paint is completely safe for use on both electric and gas-powered RC cars. The formulation is impervious to oil and fuel, meaning it will not degrade or discolour when exposed to nitro fuel vapours or motor oils, making it the ideal choice for any RC car regardless of power source.
  • What makes this paint different from standard spray paint available in the UK? — Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint has been engineered specifically for polycarbonate bodies, which require a specialist formulation that standard spray paints cannot provide. The paint contains fine metallic particles for authentic colour reproduction and bonds perfectly to lexan without damaging the material. Standard spray paints will not adhere properly to polycarbonate and may damage the body shell.
  • How much coverage does one 100ml can provide? — Each 100ml can contains the optimal amount of paint to finish one complete 1/10 scale RC car body shell. This precise sizing ensures you have exactly what you need without excess waste, making it economical for hobbyists building or repainting their RC cars.
  • How long does the paint take to cure between coats? — Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint cures relatively quickly, allowing you to apply additional coats to build up colour depth and coverage. Follow the curing time recommended on the can instructions, typically allowing a short wait between coats. Multiple coats will create a richer, more vibrant metallic orange finish.
  • Will the metallic finish remain visible after the paint dries? — Yes, the fine metallic particles in this paint remain suspended in the dried coating, creating a permanent metallic sheen that is visible through the transparent polycarbonate body. This gives your RC car an authentic, professional appearance with genuine depth and lustre to the orange finish.
  • Is this paint available in other colours and finishes from Tamiya? — Yes, Tamiya produces a complete range of Lexan Spray Paints in various colours and finishes, including solids, metallics, pearls, and special effects options. The PS-61 Metallic Orange is one of the most popular colours for RC car bodies, but enthusiasts can explore the full Tamiya paint range to find their preferred finish.
