Overview

The Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-48 Anodised Silver is a premium polycarbonate spray paint specifically formulated for RC car modelling enthusiasts across the UK. Whether you're building a high-performance RC buggy, monster truck, or competition-grade vehicle, this specialist paint delivers professional results with a stunning metallic silver finish. Tamiya's renowned reputation for quality extends to this paint range, which has been developed through special research to produce colours that shine brighter than ever before, giving your RC body a sparkling aluminium appearance that stands out on the track or at the bash spot.

This product is essential for anyone serious about RC car customisation in the UK RC hobby market. The Tamiya PS-48 gives a distinctive anodised silver metallic finish that transforms transparent polycarbonate (Lexan) bodies into eye-catching models. The paint is specifically engineered for Lexan bodies used in RC car modelling, ensuring perfect adhesion and durability. If you're looking to create a professional-looking RC vehicle, this paint is the ideal choice for decorating your polycarbonate shell from the inside out, creating depth and brilliance that catches the light beautifully.

For RC enthusiasts looking for reliable, proven paint solutions that work with fuel-powered and electric RC cars alike, this Tamiya spray paint represents excellent value and professional-grade results. The 100ml can contains exactly the right amount to finish a typical RC body, making it economical and efficient for your RC car UK projects.

Key Features

  • Formulated Specifically for Polycarbonate (Lexan) Bodies — This paint has been developed exclusively for transparent polycarbonate RC car bodies, ensuring perfect compatibility and adhesion that you won't get from standard spray paints. Using a polycarbonate-specific formula means the paint bonds properly to Lexan without damaging or crazing the material, which is critical for maintaining the structural integrity and clarity of your RC body.
  • Metallic Silver Finish with Sparkling Aluminium Appearance — The PS-48 delivers a premium metallic silver colour that produces a sparkling aluminium-like finish, giving your RC vehicle a professional, high-end appearance. Thanks to special research into pigment technology, these colours shine more than ever before, creating depth and visual impact that makes your RC car stand out from the competition.
  • Impervious to Oil and Fuel — Unlike standard spray paints, this polycarbonate paint is completely resistant to oil and fuel, making it safe for use on gas-powered and nitro-fuelled RC cars and trucks. This fuel resistance ensures your paint job remains vibrant and intact even on competition-grade RC vehicles that run on nitro or petrol fuel, protecting your investment in body customisation.
  • 100ml Aerosol Can with Perfect Coverage — Each can contains exactly 100ml of paint, which is the manufacturer-determined appropriate amount for finishing a complete RC model body. This eliminates guesswork about quantity and ensures you have sufficient paint for multiple coats whilst avoiding wasteful overspending on excess product.
  • Quick-Drying Formula — The paint cures quickly between coats, allowing you to complete your RC body painting project efficiently and get your vehicle race-ready without lengthy delays. After the first coat has cured, you can immediately apply additional coats to build up colour depth and coverage.
  • Easy Application from Inside the Body — Simply paint the body from the inside surface, keeping the spray can approximately 30cm away from the polycarbonate shell. This inside-painting method ensures even, professional coverage whilst protecting the delicate Lexan material and preventing overspray onto other RC components.
  • Recommended Undercoat Option for Enhanced Results — For even brighter and more vibrant results, Tamiya recommends spraying the underside with PS-5 Black after applying the PS-48 metallic silver. This undercoat technique creates superior colour depth and brilliance, allowing the metallic pigments to reflect light more effectively and produce a more striking finish on your RC car body.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya PS-48 Anodised Silver spray paint represents sophisticated paint chemistry engineered for the demanding requirements of RC car modelling. This polycarbonate paint is manufactured to strict tolerances, with a semi-gloss finish that provides both protection and aesthetic appeal. The metallic pigmentation technology delivers exceptional colour richness and light reflection properties, creating the characteristic sparkling aluminium appearance that makes competition-grade RC vehicles visually distinctive. The paint's formulation ensures it remains impervious to oil and fuel exposure, critical for reliability on nitro and fuel-powered RC cars and trucks. The 100ml aerosol delivery system provides consistent pressure and atomisation, allowing precise application from the interior of Lexan bodies at the recommended 30cm distance. The quick-drying characteristics mean curing time between coats is minimal, enabling efficient project completion. For optimal results on transparent polycarbonate, apply multiple thin coats rather than one thick coat, building up the metallic finish gradually. The paint's compatibility with polycarbonate chemistry ensures lasting durability without material degradation, whilst its fuel and oil resistance protects the finish on high-performance RC vehicles used in competitive racing or casual bashing throughout the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use Tamiya PS-48 spray paint on plastic model kits? — No, this paint is formulated exclusively for polycarbonate (Lexan) bodies used in RC car modelling and must never be used on plastic model kits. The paint formula is specifically engineered for polycarbonate compatibility and will not adhere properly to standard plastic model materials. Always use Tamiya's plastic-specific paints for plastic model kits and reserve this product for Lexan RC bodies only.
  • Is this paint suitable for both electric and fuel-powered RC cars? — Yes, the Tamiya PS-48 is safe for use on both electric RC cars and gas-powered or nitro-fuelled RC vehicles. The paint's formulation is impervious to oil and fuel, making it ideal for any RC car type, whether you're running brushless electric motors or nitro engines. This fuel resistance ensures your paint job maintains its appearance and integrity regardless of your RC powertrain choice.
  • What is the recommended application technique for best results? — Paint the body from the inside surface, keeping the aerosol can approximately 30cm away from the polycarbonate shell. Apply thin, even coats rather than one thick coat, allowing each coat to cure before applying the next. For maximum brilliance, apply a coat of Tamiya PS-5 Black to the underside after the PS-48 silver has cured, which enhances the metallic effect and colour depth significantly.
  • How many RC bodies can I paint with one 100ml can? — Each 100ml can contains the manufacturer-recommended amount for finishing one complete RC model body. Depending on the size of your body, coat thickness, and spray technique, one can should comfortably cover a standard RC car, buggy, or truck body. Having a second can available is sensible if you plan multiple coats or own multiple bodies to paint.
  • What ventilation is required when spraying this paint? — You must use this paint in an area with plenty of ventilation due to the strong-smelling fumes produced during spraying. Adequate air circulation is essential for both safety and to prevent the fumes from accumulating in your workspace. Use the paint outdoors if possible, or in a well-ventilated garage or shed with doors and windows open. Always follow safety guidelines for spray paint application.
  • Can I combine PS-48 with other Tamiya polycarbonate paints for custom colours? — The PS-48 Anodised Silver works excellently in combination with other polycarbonate spray paints. Many RC enthusiasts back PS-48 with contrasting colours for stunning two-tone effects, or layer it with other metallic shades. The quick-drying formula allows efficient colour layering to create custom finishes on your RC body.
  • Is this paint suitable for beginners in RC car modelling? — Yes, the Tamiya PS-48 is excellent for beginners to RC car painting. The simple spray application method, forgiving coverage, and quick-drying formula make it accessible to newcomers. Beginners should practice spray technique by keeping the can at the recommended 30cm distance and applying thin, even coats. The straightforward method of painting from inside the body eliminates many common painting mistakes, making this ideal for learning polycarbonate body finishing.
  • How does PS-48 Anodised Silver compare to other Tamiya polycarbonate paints? — The PS-48 is part of Tamiya's extensively researched metallic colour range, which produces colours that shine more brilliantly than standard finishes. The anodised silver finish specifically delivers a sparkling aluminium appearance with exceptional light reflection. Compared to standard colours, the metallic formulation provides superior visual impact and depth, making it a premium choice for serious RC enthusiasts seeking professional-grade results on their RC vehicles.
