Overview

The Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-42 Translucent Yellow is a specialist spray paint formulation developed specifically for decorating transparent polycarbonate bodies used in RC car modelling. Whether you are building an RC drift car, RC on-road racer, or RC buggy with a polycarbonate body shell, this paint delivers the authentic translucent frosted glass effect that serious RC enthusiasts demand. Each aerosol can contains 100ml of paint, which is the ideal amount for finishing one complete model body, making it cost-effective and convenient for RC modellers across the UK.

This translucent yellow spray paint is part of Tamiya's renowned range of polycarbonate-specific paints, recognised as the professional choice for RC car body decoration. Unlike standard plastic model paints, these sprays are engineered to work with the unique properties of polycarbonate materials, ensuring perfect adhesion, colour vibrancy, and durability. The paint is impervious to oil and fuels, making it completely safe to use on gas-powered RC car bodies, as well as electric-powered vehicles. Whether you're a seasoned RC competitor preparing your race car, a weekend basher customising your model, or a hobbyist discovering RC car building for the first time, this Tamiya product delivers professional results.

One of the standout advantages of using Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint is the ability to paint from the inside of the body shell rather than the outside, a technique that protects the finished surface from damage and wear. The translucent nature of this yellow spray allows you to achieve stunning visual effects, particularly when combined with Bright Silver to create deep mica colour finishes that really make your RC car stand out on the track or at the club.

Key Features

  • Specialist Polycarbonate Formula — This paint is engineered exclusively for transparent polycarbonate bodies, not standard plastic models. The specialised formulation ensures perfect adhesion to polycarbonate whilst avoiding the damage that regular paints can cause to this material.
  • Translucent Frosted Glass Effect — The translucent yellow colour is designed to achieve a beautiful frosted glass appearance on polycarbonate bodies. When light passes through the painted shell, it creates depth and visual interest that solid colours cannot match, making your RC car body truly distinctive.
  • Fuel and Oil Resistant — These paints are completely impervious to oil and fuel, meaning you can safely use them on both electric RC cars and gas-powered RC vehicles without fear of the paint degrading or peeling over time.
  • Inside Painting Capability — The unique painting application allows you to spray from inside the body shell, protecting the finished painted surface from scratches, dirt, and UV damage during handling and use. This inside-out approach is a hallmark of professional RC body painting.
  • Deep Mica Colour Combinations — When combined with Bright Silver, this translucent yellow creates stunning deep mica colour effects that catch the eye and add depth to your RC model. This mixing capability gives you creative control over the final appearance.
  • Perfect Single-Can Coverage — Each 100ml aerosol contains exactly the right amount of paint to complete one full RC car body, eliminating waste and ensuring you have sufficient paint for the job without excess.
  • Professional-Grade Quality — Tamiya is the recognised leader in RC paint formulations, trusted by serious RC enthusiasts, competitors, and hobby shops worldwide. This translucent yellow spray represents professional-grade quality at an accessible price point.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-42 Translucent Yellow delivers consistent, professional-grade performance when applied correctly to polycarbonate RC car bodies. The paint is formulated to cure properly when applied in thin, even coats from approximately 30cm distance from the surface. For optimal results, apply the paint from inside the body shell, which is the correct technique for polycarbonate bodies and protects the finished paint from external damage. After the initial coat has cured, additional coats can be applied as necessary to achieve the desired colour depth and opacity. The translucent nature means you can layer coats to intensify the yellow hue or keep them light for a more subtle effect. The paint's resistance to oil and fuel makes it equally suitable for electric-powered RC cars and nitro-powered models, providing versatility across different RC platforms. The 100ml capacity is specifically calculated to provide complete coverage for a standard RC car body without excess, making the product both economical and convenient for modellers. When used as part of a colour combination strategy with Bright Silver, this translucent yellow creates authentic mica effects that demonstrate the depth of colour control possible with Tamiya's polycarbonate spray system.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint on standard plastic RC model bodies? — No, absolutely not. This paint is formulated exclusively for polycarbonate bodies. Using it on plastic models will damage the plastic and ruin your model. Always check that your RC body is polycarbonate before applying this paint.
  • What is the correct distance to hold the spray can from the body when painting? — When spraying the body from the inside, keep the aerosol can approximately 30cm away from the surface. This distance ensures even coverage and prevents runs or drips that would ruin the finish.
  • How many coats do I need to apply? — This depends on your desired opacity and colour intensity. Apply your first coat, allow it to cure completely, then assess the colour depth. Apply additional coats as necessary until you achieve your preferred appearance. The translucent nature means you have control over how much colour shows through.
  • Is this paint suitable for gas-powered RC cars as well as electric? — Yes, this paint is completely impervious to oil and fuel, making it safe for both electric RC cars and nitro-powered RC vehicles. You can use it with confidence on any RC platform without fear of fuel degradation.
  • How do I create the mica colour effect mentioned? — Combine this translucent yellow with Bright Silver Tamiya Lexan paint to achieve deep mica colour finishes. The silver acts as a base that reflects light through the translucent yellow, creating a rich, multidimensional colour effect that solid colours cannot achieve.
  • What are the advantages of painting from inside the body shell? — Painting from the inside protects your finished paint job from external damage, scratches, dirt, and UV exposure. This technique keeps the painted surface clean and pristine while you handle and use your RC car, maintaining the professional appearance much longer than outside painting would.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst the paint itself is straightforward to use, RC body painting does require a spray area, protective equipment, and careful technique. Beginners should practice on spare body shells and follow all safety guidelines. The inside-painting approach is actually beneficial for beginners as it reduces the risk of damaging the finished surface.
