Overview
The Traxxas Spur 54-tooth Steel (wide-face, 1.0 metric pitch) TRX6449R is a premium drivetrain component designed for serious RC enthusiasts looking to optimise their monster truck or high-performance RC vehicle. Whether you're running a Traxxas X-Maxx, WideMaxx, Maxx Slash, XRT, or compatible brushless RC truck, this steel spur gear offers the durability and performance tuning capability that separates casual bashers from dedicated RC car UK hobbyists. As a spare part, this gear is essential for maintaining peak performance and extends the lifespan of your drivetrain when wear occurs during intense off-road running or high-speed competition.
Traxxas spur gears are recognised worldwide as precision engineering components that allow you to fine-tune the performance characteristics of your RC model. The 54-tooth configuration provides a specific gear ratio that directly influences how your vehicle accelerates and reaches top speed. By changing gear ratios strategically, you can balance acceleration and top speed for different running conditions—whether that's a grass field, sand dunes, or tarmac surfaces. This means one vehicle can be adapted for multiple environments simply by swapping spur gears, making this TRX6449R an invaluable addition to any serious RC hobbyist's spare parts collection.
What sets this particular spur gear apart is its construction: premium steel with extra-wide tooth faces. Steel is the ultimate material choice when maximum power handling and durability are required. If you're running a high-powered brushless RC motor in your truck, the standard plastic spur gears will wear out quickly under the stress. This steel upgrade eliminates that problem, offering dramatically improved longevity and heat resistance. For RC model owners in the UK looking to get the most out of their investment, upgrading to a steel spur gear is one of the smartest maintenance decisions you can make.
Key Features
- 54-tooth configuration — The specific tooth count determines the gear ratio of your spur gear, directly affecting how quickly your RC vehicle accelerates and how fast it reaches top speed. The 54-tooth ratio is a popular middle-ground setting that balances speed and torque delivery, making it ideal for a wide variety of running conditions and styles.
- Extra-wide steel teeth — Unlike standard plastic spur gears, these extra-wide steel teeth are engineered to handle the massive power output of modern brushless motors without stripping, cracking, or wearing prematurely. Wide-face gears distribute load more evenly across multiple teeth, reducing stress concentration and extending component lifespan significantly.
- 1.0 metric pitch specification — The metric pitch determines how the gear meshes with the pinion gear on your motor. A 1.0 metric pitch (also known as 1.0 Mod) is the standard specification for Traxxas performance vehicles, ensuring perfect meshing compatibility and reliable power transmission without gaps or excessive wear.
- Premium steel construction — Steel delivers the ultimate in durability and heat resistance compared to plastic alternatives. Under the extreme stresses of brushless RC performance, steel gears maintain their shape, don't soften from motor heat, and resist the warping that can occur with plastic gears over time. This makes steel the preferred material for high-end RC vehicles.
- Traxxas OEM quality — As an official Traxxas replacement part, this spur gear is manufactured to the same exacting standards as components fitted to new vehicles. You're getting genuine Traxxas engineering and quality assurance, not a third-party clone that may not fit perfectly or perform reliably.
- Performance tuning capability — By swapping this 54-tooth spur for different tooth counts (lower for more top speed, higher for faster acceleration), you can completely reshape how your RC truck behaves. This makes it an essential tool for drivers who want to optimise performance for specific courses or running styles.
Technical Performance
The Traxxas TRX6449R represents precision engineering at its finest. Built from high-grade steel with an extra-wide face design, this 54-tooth spur gear is specifically engineered to withstand the tremendous power output of modern brushless RC motors without failure. The 1.0 metric pitch specification ensures perfect meshing with compatible pinion gears, eliminating gaps that could cause noise, inefficiency, or premature wear. Steel's superior material properties mean this gear maintains its precise dimensions even under extreme heat and stress—something plastic gears cannot match. The wide-face design is particularly important under load; by distributing pressure across a larger tooth surface area, the gear resists the kind of catastrophic failure (stripped teeth, cracked roots) that commonly occurs with plastic components in high-power applications. For owners of brushless RC trucks like the Traxxas X-Maxx (8S), WideMaxx, Maxx Slash, XRT, and X-Monster, upgrading from plastic to steel spur gears is one of the most effective reliability upgrades available. The investment pays dividends in reduced downtime, fewer stripped gears requiring replacement, and the confidence that your drivetrain can handle maximum power delivery without compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between a 54-tooth spur gear and other tooth counts? — Spur gear tooth count directly determines the gear ratio and therefore your vehicle's acceleration versus top speed characteristics. A lower tooth count (such as 50 teeth) produces higher top speed but slower acceleration—ideal for racing on open circuits. A higher tooth count (such as 58 teeth) produces faster acceleration but lower top speed—better for crawling or technical terrain. The 54-tooth is a popular middle ground offering balanced performance for general bashing and recreational driving. Consult your Traxxas owner's manual for the recommended gear ratios for your specific model and intended use.
- Why should I upgrade from plastic to steel spur gears? — Steel spur gears offer multiple advantages over plastic: they resist stripping and cracking under the immense power of brushless motors, they maintain precise dimensions even under extreme heat, and they last far longer before requiring replacement. If you own a brushless RC truck and regularly bash at full throttle, steel spur gears will save you money in the long run by dramatically extending the service life of your drivetrain. The initial investment is recovered through reduced replacements and less downtime.
- Which Traxxas models is the TRX6449R compatible with? — This 54-tooth steel spur gear is compatible with a comprehensive range of Traxxas vehicles, including the Maxx Slash (all colour variants and 6S models), WideMaxx Monster Truck (all colours), X-Maxx Belted 4WD (all variants and colours), X-Maxx Ultimate, X-Monster Chassis, and XRT VXL-8S and XRT Ultimate models. Always verify compatibility with your specific model's documentation before installation.
- How do I install the TRX6449R spur gear? — Installation varies by model. Generally, you'll need to remove the spur gear cover, unbolt the existing spur gear from the main differential shaft, slide on the new TRX6449R gear, and secure it with the factory fasteners. Always consult your vehicle's owner's manual for detailed step-by-step installation instructions specific to your model, as torque specifications and exact procedure may vary. If you're uncomfortable performing this maintenance yourself, RC Model Shop can provide guidance or recommend a local service technician.
- What is 1.0 metric pitch and why does it matter? — Metric pitch (also called Module or Mod) describes the spacing between teeth on a gear. A 1.0 metric pitch means each tooth is spaced precisely 1.0 millimetres apart on the gear's diameter. This specification must match your pinion gear's pitch to ensure proper meshing, correct power transmission, and minimal noise or wear. Using mismatched pitches will result in poor contact between gears, inefficient power delivery, and accelerated wear. Always use gears with matching pitch specifications.
- Will this steel spur gear fit my Traxxas vehicle? — The TRX6449R is designed for large-scale Traxxas brushless trucks with 1.0 metric pitch drivetrain components. It is confirmed compatible with Maxx Slash, WideMaxx, X-Maxx, X-Monster, and XRT models. However, different Traxxas vehicle lines use different gear standards, so always verify your model's part number and specifications before ordering. Check your owner's manual or contact RC Model Shop if you're uncertain about compatibility with your specific vehicle.
