Overview
The Traxxas Differential Carrier Heavy Duty (TRX5681) is an essential upgrade component for owners of the Traxxas Slash 4X4 and other compatible RC models seeking to maximise drivetrain strength and durability. This heavy-duty differential carrier represents a significant performance enhancement over standard components, allowing RC enthusiasts across the UK to push their vehicles harder whilst maintaining reliability. Whether you're a weekend basher looking to extend your RC car's lifespan or a serious competitor preparing for intense track sessions, this differential carrier provides the robust foundation your drivetrain needs to handle power upgrades and punishing driving conditions.
The Slash 4X4 has earned its reputation as one of the most versatile RC platforms available, with a nearly limitless supply of upgrades to match. However, the drivetrain components are subjected to constant punishment during operation, making it essential to invest in reinforced parts before attempting major power modifications. This heavy-duty differential carrier, when combined with matching upgrades such as spiral-cut machined steel ring and pinion gears, ensures your RC vehicle is ready for serious performance gains without the risk of catastrophic drivetrain failure.
Upgrading your RC model with this Traxxas differential carrier is particularly important before installing engine modifications or pushing your vehicle to its limits on challenging terrain. It's better to replace worn or stock parts now than to experience costly failures during operation. RC Model Shop stocks genuine Traxxas components, ensuring you receive authentic, quality parts that will integrate seamlessly with your existing setup.
Key Features
- Heavy-duty construction — This differential carrier is engineered with reinforced design principles to withstand significantly higher torque loads than standard carriers, making it essential for owners planning power upgrades or aggressive driving styles on their RC car UK setups.
- Compatible with Slash 4X4 — Specifically designed for the Traxxas Slash 4X4 platform, this carrier integrates perfectly with the stock chassis and suspension components, requiring no modification to your existing RC truck.
- Supports internal differential gears with large steel brace — When paired with upgraded XO-1 internal differential gears (sold separately), the carrier accommodates a large steel brace for extra support, dramatically increasing gear durability and power handling capacity.
- Accommodates spiral-cut machined steel ring and pinion gears — The carrier works in conjunction with spiral-cut gears that provide a larger surface area for contact between teeth, delivering greater durability and improved power transfer compared to standard spur-cut designs.
- Oil-filled design for lubrication — The carrier is designed to hold differential oil, which lubricates all internal moving parts and helps seal critical components like the X-ring gaskets, extending component lifespan significantly.
- Includes gaskets and seals — Supplied with X-ring gaskets and ring gear gasket to ensure a watertight seal, this carrier package provides everything needed for a proper, leak-free installation on your RC model.
Technical Performance
The Traxxas Differential Carrier Heavy Duty represents a precision-engineered upgrade that transforms your RC vehicle's drivetrain reliability and performance capability. Constructed with reinforced materials and design principles derived from Traxxas's high-performance XO-1 platform, this carrier can handle substantially higher torque loads than factory standard components. The carrier is specifically engineered to work with differential oil (such as 30k weight oil, which provides adjustable locking action depending on your preferences) and features an internal geometry that accommodates the advanced internal differential gears with their distinctive large steel bracing. The X-ring gaskets (supplied as two pieces) and ring gear gasket provide critical sealing functions, preventing differential oil from leaking and compromising the seal integrity when the ring gear is fastened to the carrier using the included hardware. When assembled correctly with the appropriate internal gears and spiral-cut ring and pinion gears, this carrier system delivers significantly improved power handling, gear durability, and overall drivetrain longevity compared to stock Slash 4X4 components. The modular design of the Slash chassis makes installation straightforward, though professional assembly is recommended to ensure proper oil filling, gasket seating, and fastener torque specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this differential carrier suitable for my Traxxas Slash 4X4? — Yes, this heavy-duty carrier is specifically designed for the Traxxas Slash 4X4 platform and integrates with the modular chassis design. It is engineered to replace the standard differential carrier with a significantly reinforced component capable of handling power upgrades.
- What oil should I use in this differential carrier? — Traxxas recommends using differential oil in the carrier; the manufacturer's upgrade guide specifically mentions using 30k weight differential oil. However, you can use any weight you prefer, as the higher the weight, the more locking action your differential will have, allowing you to tune the handling characteristics of your RC car UK to suit your driving style.
- Can I install this carrier myself? — Installation is possible for experienced RC enthusiasts with appropriate tools and mechanical knowledge. The process involves removing the bulkhead assembly, detaching axles, removing the differential cover, and carefully installing the new carrier with precise oil filling and gasket seating. A Traxxas tool kit is recommended for the various screwdriver bits required. If you are uncertain about the process, professional installation is advised to ensure proper assembly and sealing.
- What makes this heavy-duty carrier different from the standard Slash 4X4 differential? — The heavy-duty carrier features reinforced construction principles derived from Traxxas's high-performance XO-1 platform, allowing it to accommodate upgraded internal gears with large steel bracing and handle substantially higher torque loads. This makes it essential for owners planning significant power upgrades or aggressive driving, as it prevents premature wear and catastrophic drivetrain failure that might occur with standard components.
- Do I need to upgrade anything else on my Slash 4X4 at the same time? — For optimal results and maximum durability, Traxxas recommends upgrading additional drivetrain components simultaneously, including spiral-cut machined steel ring and pinion gears (front and rear), upgraded internal differential gears, and a heavy-duty clutch pack with aluminium bearing adapter. This comprehensive approach ensures all drivetrain components work together at the same performance level.
- What is the purpose of the X-ring gaskets and ring gear gasket included with this carrier? — These gaskets provide critical sealing functions that prevent differential oil from leaking out of the carrier assembly. The X-ring gaskets seal around the output shafts, whilst the ring gear gasket seals the joint between the ring gear and carrier body. Proper sealing is essential for maintaining adequate lubrication of internal components and ensuring long-term reliability.
