Overview

The Corally 48 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 34 Teeth Shaft Dia. 3.17mm (C-71434) is a high-performance replacement pinion gear designed for RC car enthusiasts across the UK who demand precision engineering and reliability. This specialist component is manufactured by Team Corally, a recognised leader in RC drivetrain components, and represents an essential upgrade or replacement part for anyone running 48 DP gearing on their electric RC car. Whether you're a competitive racer fine-tuning your setup for the perfect gear ratio, a weekend basher maintaining your vehicle, or an experienced RC hobbyist building a custom transmission setup, this pinion gear delivers the concentricity and durability you need for consistent, vibration-free performance on track.

Built from special hardened steel using CNC manufacturing techniques, this 34-tooth pinion is engineered to withstand the demands of serious RC racing whilst maintaining ultra-precise tooth geometry. The gear is created on specialist gear-cutting machinery that guarantees perfect tooth shaping and concentricity—critical factors that directly affect how smoothly your motor engages with the spur gear and how efficiently power is transferred to the wheels. Every pinion produced to these exacting standards ensures vibration-free operation, meaning less noise, less wear on surrounding components, and better overall performance on any track surface.

The C-71434 is part of Corally's comprehensive range of 48 DP pinion gears, allowing you to select the ideal tooth count for your driving style, track conditions, and motor choice. This particular 34-tooth configuration suits a wide variety of RC car builds and provides a balanced setup for many popular vehicles in the UK RC market.

Key Features

  • Special Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion is manufactured from hardened steel specifically chosen for its toughness and durability, meaning it can withstand the continuous stress of motor engagement without deforming, stripping, or wearing prematurely, even under heavy use or high-torque conditions.
  • CNC-Cut Teeth for Perfect Geometry — Each tooth is precisely cut on computer-controlled machinery, guaranteeing perfect tooth shape and pitch accuracy that ensures smooth, quiet meshing with your spur gear and eliminates the drivetrain noise and inefficiency that comes from poorly manufactured gears.
  • Unparalleled Concentricity — The gear is manufactured with ultra-precise concentricity, meaning the teeth are perfectly centred around the shaft bore, which is essential for vibration-free operation and consistent power delivery across every rotation.
  • Ultra-True Running Design — Every pinion features ultra-true running characteristics, which means less wobble, less vibration, and less wear on bearing surfaces—translating to smoother acceleration, better handling predictability, and longer component lifespan on your RC car.
  • Tooth Number Identification Marking — Each pinion is clearly marked with its tooth count, making identification quick and easy when selecting the correct gear or when storing multiple pinions for different setups.
  • European Manufacture — Built in Europe to exacting quality standards, this component represents quality manufacturing you can rely on, not mass-produced alternatives that may vary in quality or tolerances.
  • Universal 48 DP Compatibility — This 48 DP pitch pinion fits all RC cars equipped with 48 DP gearing systems, making it a versatile upgrade or replacement option for a wide range of vehicles in the RC market.
  • 3.17mm Motor Shaft Compatibility — Designed specifically for motors with 3.17mm output shafts, which is an industry-standard size found on many brushless and brushed motors used in modern RC cars across the UK.

Technical Performance

The Corally 48 DP Pinion represents the pinnacle of drivetrain engineering for RC cars, combining material science, precision manufacturing, and decades of racing heritage into a single component. The use of special hardened steel means this pinion can handle the continuous engagement forces generated by high-torque brushless motors without flexing, cracking, or gradually wearing down the tooth profile. Unlike cheaper alternatives, the hardened steel construction maintains consistent tooth geometry throughout the pinion's lifespan, ensuring that your gear ratio remains stable and your power delivery stays predictable lap after lap. The CNC cutting process creates teeth with perfect involute geometry—the mathematical curve that ensures smooth meshing with your spur gear. This precision is not merely cosmetic; it directly impacts efficiency, noise levels, and longevity. The concentricity specification ensures that when the pinion is installed on your motor shaft, the teeth run perfectly true, meaning zero runout and zero vibration. This matters because even tiny amounts of runout (just millimetres) can cause binding, increased friction, and accelerated wear. The 34-tooth configuration at 48 DP pitch provides a moderate gear ratio suitable for a wide range of track speeds and motor types. With a 3.17mm shaft diameter, it accommodates standard brushless and brushed motor outputs, making it compatible with countless popular RC car platforms used by UK enthusiasts. The 4mm teeth width and 9mm gear length provide robust contact surfaces for reliable power transmission, whilst the 1.5mm hex socket allows for secure installation with standard RC tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a 48 DP pinion and why does it matter for my RC car? — A 48 DP pinion is a gearing component that transfers power from your motor to the wheels through engagement with a larger spur gear. The 48 DP specification refers to the tooth pitch (Diametral Pitch), which determines the tooth size and spacing. This particular pinion has 34 teeth, which combined with your spur gear tooth count, determines your overall gear ratio—essentially controlling how fast your car goes and how much torque it produces. Different tooth counts allow you to fine-tune performance for different tracks and driving styles.
  • Is this pinion suitable for beginners? — The Corally 48 DP Pinion is a replacement component rather than a complete vehicle, so it's best suited to hobbyists who already own an RC car and understand basic maintenance and parts replacement. If you're new to the RC car hobby, we recommend starting with a ready-to-run RC car package. However, if you're learning about RC drivetrain tuning and want to experiment with gear ratios, this is an excellent professional-quality component to use.
  • What is the benefit of hardened steel over standard steel? — Hardened steel is heat-treated to increase its hardness and wear resistance, meaning the teeth can withstand higher stresses without deforming, stripping, or gradually wearing down. Standard steel gears may develop flat spots or rounding on the tooth tips over time, which reduces meshing quality and efficiency. The hardened steel used in this Corally pinion maintains its tooth profile indefinitely, ensuring consistent performance throughout its service life.
  • What is concentricity and why is it important? — Concentricity refers to how perfectly centred the gear teeth are around the shaft bore. When concentricity is poor, the gear wobbles slightly as it rotates, causing vibration, noise, binding, and accelerated wear. The Corally pinion features unparalleled concentricity, meaning the teeth run perfectly true with zero runout, translating to smooth, quiet, efficient operation and longer component lifespan.
  • Does this pinion work with all RC cars? — This 48 DP pinion fits all RC cars equipped with 48 DP gearing systems and motors with 3.17mm output shafts. Many popular RC cars use this standard, but not all—you'll need to verify your vehicle uses 48 DP gearing before purchasing. If you're unsure, contact our team at RC Model Shop and we'll help you identify your vehicle's gearing specification.
  • How do I choose the correct tooth count for my pinion? — The tooth count directly affects your gear ratio. More teeth (higher numbers like 34T, 35T, 36T) create a higher gear ratio, giving more top speed but less torque and acceleration. Fewer teeth create a lower gear ratio with better acceleration but lower top speed. The ideal number depends on your motor KV rating, your track size, and your driving style. Faster motors typically use more teeth, slower tracks benefit from fewer teeth. The Corally range offers all gearing sizes, so you can experiment to find your perfect setup.
  • Can I use this pinion with different spur gears? — Yes, the 48 DP pitch allows you to pair this pinion with any 48 DP spur gear. The overall gear ratio is determined by the pinion tooth count divided by the spur gear tooth count. For example, a 34T pinion with an 80T spur produces a 2.35:1 ratio, whilst a 34T pinion with a 90T spur produces a 2.64:1 ratio. Experimenting with different combinations lets you fine-tune your setup.
