Overview

The ARRMA 23T Mod1 Safe-D5 Pinion Gear Z-ARA310970 is an essential replacement and upgrade component for serious RC car enthusiasts in the UK who demand precision engineering and reliable performance. Whether you're running an ARRMA Felony 6S BLX, an Outcast 4X4 8S BLX, or a TALION 6S EXB, this pinion gear is engineered to deliver smooth, efficient power transmission from your brushless motor to the main drivetrain. As a critical component in any high-performance brushless RC car setup, selecting the right pinion gear is fundamental to achieving optimal speed, torque delivery, and overall vehicle handling characteristics.

The 23-tooth configuration on this Mod1 pitch gear makes it an ideal choice for users looking to fine-tune their RC car's gearing ratio and performance envelope. Pinion gears are one of the most frequently replaced consumables in RC motorsport and recreational bashing alike, making it essential to keep spares on hand for competitive racing or regular weekend driving sessions. The Safe-D5 bore specification ensures secure, slip-free engagement with compatible motor shafts, guaranteeing reliable power transfer during hard acceleration, cornering and high-speed runs. Built to ARRMA's quality standards, this pinion gear represents genuine, authorised replacement equipment for your brushless RC car.

RC Model Shop stocks genuine ARRMA parts and accessories for all major RC car models available in the UK market. Whether you're upgrading your gearing for faster acceleration, replacing a worn pinion, or building a complete custom drivetrain setup, we supply everything you need for both competitive and recreational RC driving. This pinion gear is backed by ARRMA's engineering expertise and is designed to withstand the demands of modern 6S and 8S brushless RC vehicles.

Key Features

  • 23-Tooth Design — The 23-tooth count provides a specific gear ratio option that allows you to optimise your RC car's acceleration and top speed characteristics, giving you the flexibility to dial in performance for different track conditions and driving styles.
  • Mod1 Pitch Specification — The Mod1 (Module 1) pitch ensures compatibility with ARRMA's standardised drivetrain components, guaranteeing smooth mesh and efficient power transfer without excessive backlash or wear patterns.
  • Safe-D5 Bore — The Safe-D5 bore configuration provides a secure, interference-fit connection to compatible motor shafts, eliminating slip and ensuring consistent power delivery throughout your driving session, from standing start acceleration through to high-speed cornering.
  • Genuine ARRMA Component — This is an authentic ARRMA pinion gear, manufactured to the exact specifications required for reliable operation in ARRMA brushless RC cars, ensuring perfect fit and durability compared to third-party alternatives.
  • Universal Brushless Compatibility — Designed to work with ARRMA's brushless motor systems found in 6S and 8S models, this pinion gear integrates seamlessly into established drivetrain configurations without modification.

Technical Performance

The ARRMA 23T Mod1 Safe-D5 Pinion Gear is engineered with precision tolerances to deliver reliable performance in high-power brushless RC applications. The Mod1 pitch standard ensures compatibility with ARRMA's spur gears and motor systems, providing consistent gear mesh characteristics and minimal noise during operation. The 23-tooth count is a popular intermediate ratio, offering a balanced approach between acceleration and top speed for drivers who want responsive handling without sacrificing maximum velocity. The Safe-D5 bore utilises a tapered design that creates an extremely secure connection with compatible motor shafts, preventing the kind of slippage that can occur under heavy load or during aggressive driving manoeuvres. Whether you're running a 6S LiPo battery configuration in an ARRMA Felony or pushing an 8S system in an Outcast 4X4 or TALION, this pinion gear is built to handle the torque and rotational forces generated by modern brushless motors. The manufacturing quality reflects ARRMA's commitment to producing components that can survive hard bashing, competitive racing and demanding track conditions without premature wear or failure. Regular inspection and replacement of your pinion gear is recommended as part of standard RC car maintenance, particularly if you notice unusual noise from the drivetrain or a loss of power transfer efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why does my RC car need one? — A pinion gear is a small toothed gear that mounts directly onto your RC car's motor shaft and meshes with the spur gear (main drivetrain gear). The pinion transfers power from the motor to the wheels, and the number of teeth on the pinion directly affects your vehicle's speed and acceleration characteristics. A smaller number of teeth (like 23T) provides more acceleration but lower top speed, whilst a larger tooth count delivers higher top speed with less acceleration. Pinion gears are consumable parts that wear over time and need replacing as part of regular RC car maintenance.
  • Is the 23-tooth configuration right for my driving style? — The 23-tooth pinion is considered a mid-range ratio and works well for drivers seeking a balanced blend of acceleration response and top speed. If you find your car is too slow, you can drop to a 21-tooth pinion for quicker acceleration. If you want more top speed, upgrade to a 25 or 27-tooth option. The beauty of pinion gearing is that it allows fine-tuning of your vehicle's performance without major modifications.
  • What does the Safe-D5 bore mean and why does it matter? — The Safe-D5 bore is ARRMA's specification for the hole that slides onto your motor shaft. The Safe-D5 design provides a secure, slip-free fit that prevents the pinion from spinning independently under heavy acceleration or during hard cornering. This ensures 100% power transfer from your brushless motor to the drivetrain. A slipping pinion results in loss of power, potential damage to the motor shaft and shaft keyways, and inconsistent vehicle performance.
  • Which ARRMA models can use this 23T pinion gear? — This pinion gear is compatible with the ARRMA Felony 6S BLX (both Orange and Black variants), the ARRMA 1/5 Outcast 4X4 8S BLX EXB brushless stunt truck, and the ARRMA 1/7 TALION 6S EXB 4X4 speed truck. Always verify that your specific model is listed in the compatibility section before purchasing, as using an incompatible pinion can result in poor mesh and drivetrain damage.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gear? — Pinion gear lifespan depends on how frequently you use your RC car, the driving intensity and track conditions. Competitive racers might replace their pinion every few events, whilst casual bashers might go several months between replacements. You should inspect your pinion regularly for signs of tooth wear, chipping or cracking. If you notice unusual grinding noises from the drivetrain or a sudden loss of power, it's time to fit a fresh pinion gear.
  • Can I mix and match pinion gears from different manufacturers? — Whilst some third-party pinions might physically fit, we strongly recommend using genuine ARRMA pinion gears designed specifically for your vehicle. ARRMA's Mod1 specification and Safe-D5 bore are engineered to precise tolerances that guarantee smooth mesh and reliable power transfer. Using non-genuine parts risks inadequate fit, increased wear, noise and potential drivetrain damage. Always choose authorised ARRMA components for the best results.
  • Do I need any special tools to install this pinion gear? — Installation of a pinion gear typically requires a pinion puller tool (to remove the old gear from your motor shaft) and an arbour press or gear installation tool to fit the new one safely without damaging the motor shaft or bearing. We recommend consulting your vehicle's manual for detailed installation instructions or seeking advice from experienced RC enthusiasts.
