This FTX buggy review looks at why FTX models remain a sensible choice for newcomers and casual bashers, where they perform best, and what to check before choosing one.
FTX has long been a familiar name in the UK RC scene because it offers proper hobby-grade vehicles at approachable prices. That distinction matters. A hobby-grade buggy is designed to be maintained, repaired and improved over time, rather than discarded after one damaged suspension arm or tired battery.
What an FTX buggy does well
The appeal of an FTX buggy is straightforward: you get a lively electric RC car with independent suspension, replaceable parts and a layout that is easy to understand. For many buyers, an entry-level 1/10 scale buggy is the right step up from a toy-grade car. It is quick enough to feel exciting, yet generally manageable on a driveway, compact track or firm grass.
Models such as the FTX Vantage have earned a following for this reason. A four-wheel-drive buggy format gives useful traction when the surface is loose, damp or dusty. It also helps less experienced drivers put the power down without constantly spinning the rear wheels. The low body and wide stance make a buggy feel more planted than a monster lorry, particularly through faster turns.
FTX vehicles are usually supplied in ready-to-run form, although the exact package can vary by version. Always check whether a battery and charger are included before ordering. A ready-to-run car still needs a properly charged battery, sensible setup and a suitable place to run it.
The other major advantage is supportability. Suspension arms, hubs, body shells, gears, driveshafts and electronics are all serviceable parts. A crash does not have to end a weekend's running. For a first-time owner, that availability makes the hobby less frustrating and far better value in the long run.
FTX buggy review: the real-world compromises
Value-focused RC vehicles always involve a few compromises, and it is better to be clear about them. An FTX buggy is not intended to be a competition race machine straight from the box, nor should it be treated like a much larger, high-powered basher designed for repeated skate-park jumps.
Ground clearance is the first consideration. Buggies are excellent on short grass, tarmac, hard-packed dirt and prepared loose surfaces. Long or wet grass can overload the drivetrain, trap debris around the wheels and make the vehicle work much harder than it should. If your usual running area is a rough field, a truggy, stadium lorry or monster lorry could be the more practical choice.
The standard tyres on an entry-level buggy are also a compromise. They need to work reasonably well across several surfaces, but no all-round tyre is perfect everywhere. On a dry, dusty patch the car may slide more than expected; on slick wet tarmac, it can lose grip suddenly. That is normal RC behaviour rather than a fault, but it rewards a gentler trigger finger.
Durability depends heavily on driving style. The chassis and suspension are made for regular use, but high-speed impacts and badly landed jumps can still break parts. New drivers often assume more speed is the answer. In practice, learning smooth throttle control, braking before a turn and avoiding kerb-height jumps will keep a buggy going for much longer.
2WD or 4WD: which is the better choice?
For a beginner, four-wheel drive is normally the easier route. It provides extra stability under acceleration and feels more confident on mixed UK surfaces. A 4WD buggy can be a good all-weather garden or car-park model, provided the surface is not too rough or waterlogged.
Two-wheel drive has its own appeal. It is often simpler mechanically, can be lighter, and teaches good throttle control because the rear wheels must do more of the work. On a dry, smooth surface, a 2WD buggy can be great fun and rewarding to drive. It can also require more patience when grip is limited.
The right answer depends on who will use it. For a younger driver, a family gift or someone wanting easy early success, 4WD is usually the safer recommendation. An enthusiast who enjoys setting up a car and refining their driving may enjoy the character of 2WD more.
Brushed versus brushless power
Many FTX buggies are available in brushed or brushless forms, or have compatible upgrade routes. Brushed power is typically the best starting point. It is more modest in speed, easier on drivetrain components and less intimidating in a small running space. It also gives drivers time to learn steering and braking rather than simply reacting to speed.
Brushless power brings stronger acceleration, higher top speed and a more demanding driving experience. It may need a more capable battery, charger and greater attention to gearing and temperatures. It is an excellent upgrade for experienced drivers, but it is rarely the most economical first purchase if the car will mainly be used in a garden.
If you are buying for a child, check whether the transmitter has an adjustable throttle limit. Reducing maximum throttle at the start can prevent breakages and build confidence. Once basic control is there, full power feels like a worthwhile upgrade without buying another model.
Batteries, charging and running time
Battery choice changes how an FTX buggy feels. A nickel-metal hydride battery is simple and forgiving, making it suitable for a first hobby-grade model. Lithium polymer batteries are lighter and can provide stronger performance, but they need a compatible balance charger and careful handling.
Do not choose a battery based on the highest capacity alone. It must fit the battery tray, use the correct connector and suit the vehicle's electronics. A physically oversized pack or unsuitable connector can turn a simple upgrade into an unnecessary modification.
Actual run time depends on capacity, terrain, temperature, driving style and motor type. Constant full-throttle grass running will shorten it considerably. Rather than expecting one battery to last a whole afternoon, many owners find that two sensible packs and a reliable charger provide the most useful setup.
With LiPo packs, use the battery's low-voltage protection settings where available, stop running when performance drops noticeably and never store a damaged, swollen or very hot pack. Charging should take place on a non-flammable surface under supervision. These are normal hobby habits, not reasons to avoid LiPos, but they should be understood before buying.
Spares matter more than the original price
A buggy is only good value if you can keep it running. Before purchasing, look at the parts diagram and identify the items most likely to be needed after normal use: front suspension arms, steering components, wheel hexes, body clips, gears and tyres. It is sensible to keep a few common spares in the toolbox if the vehicle will be used regularly.
A basic maintenance routine makes a noticeable difference. After each session, remove grass and stones from the chassis, check that the wheels turn freely and inspect for loose screws or bent turnbuckles. Let the motor and electronics cool before fitting another battery. If the car has been run in damp conditions, dry it thoroughly rather than putting it straight into storage.
For upgrades, prioritise reliability before speed. Better quality bearings, fresh tyres suited to your surface and stronger steering components can improve the ownership experience more than chasing a bigger motor. Aluminium parts can be useful in specific high-stress areas, but fitting metal everywhere can add weight and transfer crash forces to a more expensive component.
Who should buy an FTX buggy?
An FTX buggy suits the buyer who wants a genuine hobby RC car without immediately committing to premium race equipment. It is a strong option for first-time drivers, teenagers with access to a suitable outdoor space, and returning hobbyists who want practical spares support and a platform they can learn to maintain.
It is less suitable for somebody whose priority is crawling over rocks, running through deep mud or launching huge jumps. Choose the vehicle around the terrain, not just the body style. A buggy can be enormously capable on the right surface, but it cannot replace the ground clearance and tyre volume of a larger off-road lorry.
