Technical Performance

The eTronix ET0774 represents a significant engineering achievement in electronic power control for RC applications. Built with high-efficiency circuitry, this magnetic switch operates across an impressive 3.5V to 13V input range, covering virtually every battery chemistry and cell count configuration used in contemporary RC hobby vehicles across the UK. The continuous current rating of 15A at 25°C provides reliable power for demanding applications, whilst the burst capability of 45A over 0.1 seconds ensures the switch handles sudden load spikes without faltering—crucial when accelerating RC cars from rest or when multiple high-draw systems demand power simultaneously. The engineering excellence is evident in the ultra-low dropout voltage of just 60mV at 20A, which means minimal voltage loss across the switch itself, preserving maximum available power for your motor, servo, and receiver systems. The standby current specification of below 10µA is remarkable, indicating an exceptionally well-designed power management circuit that prevents parasitic drain when your RC model is idle. This makes the switch perfect for projects left idle between racing sessions or weekend activities. The compact 25 x 10mm dimensions belies the sophistication of the internal design, allowing installation in the tightest spaces—inside sealed receiver boxes, integrated into custom carbon fibre housings, or mounted within waterproof enclosures for amphibious RC boats and submarines. The heavy-duty 14AWG wiring supplied with each unit (170mm length) is substantial enough for high-current applications, and the absence of pre-fitted connectors gives experienced builders the flexibility to solder or crimp connections appropriate to their specific installation requirements.

Why Magnetic Switching Makes Sense for RC Enthusiasts

Traditional mechanical on/off switches rely on physical contacts that wear down with repeated use, eventually requiring replacement or becoming unreliable. Magnetic switching eliminates this entirely by using electronic sensing rather than moving metal contacts. This means zero mechanical wear regardless of how many times you activate your model. More importantly for UK RC hobbyists, magnetic switching removes the inconvenience of unplugging batteries or opening sealed compartments before each use—simply wave the included magnet near the switch location and your model powers on or off. This is particularly valuable for sealed or waterproof RC builds where opening hatches would compromise the integrity of your waterproofing. You can prepare your model in advance, leave it switched on and ready to run, and activate it externally whenever you choose. For gliders that need to be prepped high up on a mountain launch, for RC boats that must remain sealed until the moment of launch, or for race models that need absolute reliability without fumbling with external connectors, magnetic switching transforms the user experience entirely.

Perfect Applications for the eTronix ET0774

  • RC Boats and Yachts — Keep your hull sealed and waterproof by mounting the switch internally, then activate from shore using the external magnet.
  • RC Submarines and Underwater Models — Completely sealed installation with zero mechanical connections means perfect watertight integrity.
  • RC Gliders — Prepare your model on the ground, climb the mountain with it switched on, and activate launch when ready without opening any compartments.
  • Race Models with Sealed Enclosures — Keep high-performance electronics protected inside taped or sealed boxes with no need to break the seal before each run.
  • Custom High-Current Builds — With 15A continuous and 45A burst capability, this switch handles demanding motor setups and multi-system installations.
  • Projects Requiring Minimal Battery Drain — The sub-10µA standby current ensures your model can sit idle indefinitely without losing charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the eTronix ET0774 suitable for beginners? — Absolutely. Whilst advanced builders will appreciate the compact form factor and flexibility of bare wire terminals, beginners can easily use this switch in any RC application. The magnetic activation is genuinely intuitive—once installed, simply position the magnet to switch on and off. The only consideration for beginners is soldering the 14AWG wire to battery connectors, but this is a straightforward task if you have basic soldering skills.
  • What battery voltage does this magnetic switch accept? — The eTronix ET0774 accepts any battery pack between 3.5V and 13V, covering single-cell LiPo (approximately 3.7V nominal), NiMH packs (4.8V or higher), and multi-cell LiPo configurations up to 4S (approximately 14.8V nominal, though it's rated to 13V continuous). This makes it compatible with virtually every battery type used in RC hobby work across the UK.
  • Can this switch handle my high-power RC car? — Yes, the continuous current rating of 15A at 25°C suits most RC vehicles, and the burst capability of 45A over 0.1 seconds handles acceleration spikes. For exceptionally high-current applications (brushless motors drawing sustained 20A+ continuously), you may want to verify your specific requirements, but for standard RC cars, buggies, and trucks, this switch is entirely appropriate.
  • How much battery drain occurs when my RC model is idle? — The standby current is exceptionally low at below 10µA, which is negligible. In practical terms, you could leave your RC model switched on using this magnetic switch for months without appreciable battery drain. This makes it ideal for leave-it-ready-to-run setups.
  • Will this switch work with sealed and waterproof RC setups? — This is precisely what the ET0774 is designed for. The magnetic switching is completely contactless, and the compact module can be mounted inside any sealed enclosure without requiring mechanical connections to external switches. Hundreds of UK RC boat builders and glider enthusiasts use magnetic switches for exactly this purpose.
  • What's the dropout voltage and why does it matter? — Dropout voltage (60mV @ 20A) is the voltage lost across the switch itself when current flows through it. This represents wasted energy, so lower is better. The eTronix rating of 60mV at 20A is excellent, meaning minimal power loss and maximum voltage delivery to your motor and electronics, directly translating to better performance and longer runtime.
  • Can I use this switch with multiple battery types? — Yes. The 3.5V–13V input range covers LiPo, NiMH, alkaline batteries, and virtually every chemistry used in RC work. This flexibility makes the ET0774 an excellent choice for builders who run multiple RC vehicles with different battery specifications.
  • Why does the switch come without connectors? — This gives you complete flexibility. You can solder the 14AWG wires directly to XT60, Deans, or any other connectors your specific RC setup uses, or you can crimp custom connectors for higher-current applications. This is particularly valuable for builders of high-power models where connector selection is critical.
