Overview

The Hobbywing UBEC 3A 6S (HW86010010) is an essential power regulation component for any serious RC enthusiast in the UK. This external switching mode DC-DC regulator is designed to draw power from your LiPo battery pack and deliver stable, clean voltage to your receiver and other onboard electronics. Whether you're running a brushless RC car, truck, buggy or any other electric-powered RC model, this UBEC ensures your receiver and servos operate reliably without voltage sag or interference that could affect your driving experience.

Built by Hobbywing, a recognised leader in RC electronics manufacturing, this compact regulator is compatible with different brands of ESCs and works seamlessly across a wide range of battery configurations. For anyone running a 2-6S LiPo battery system (or equivalent NiMH cells), the Hobbywing UBEC 3A 6S delivers the consistent power output your RC setup demands. At just 11 grams and measuring only 43x17x7mm, it's small enough to fit into tight spaces in your chassis whilst delivering serious performance credentials.

RC hobbyists across the UK rely on quality BECs to protect their valuable electronics from voltage fluctuations and ensure smooth, responsive control during high-speed runs or challenging terrain. The Hobbywing UBEC 3A 6S is exactly the kind of reliable, well-engineered component that separates a smoothly-running RC model from one plagued by glitches and inconsistent performance.

Key Features

  • Dual voltage output with jumper selection — This UBEC can be configured to output either 5V or 6V via a simple jumper cap adjustment, allowing you to match your specific receiver and servo requirements without needing multiple regulators for different setups.
  • 3-Amp continuous current output — Delivering a solid 3 amps at either voltage setting ensures you have sufficient power margin for receivers, servos and other accessories even under high demand, preventing brownouts during intense driving sessions.
  • Wide input voltage range — Accepting input from 5.5V to 26V (covering 2-6S LiPo packs or 5-18 cell NiMH/NiCa batteries) makes this UBEC incredibly versatile across different battery chemistries and cell counts, eliminating the need for multiple regulators in your RC fleet.
  • Switching mode efficiency — Unlike older linear regulators, the switching mode design minimises heat generation and power loss, meaning more of your battery's energy reaches your electronics rather than being wasted as heat.
  • Ultra-low ripple voltage — With less than 50mVp-p ripple at 2A with 12V input, the output voltage remains remarkably clean and stable, reducing electromagnetic interference and ensuring crisp, responsive receiver performance during critical control moments.
  • Compact form factor — At just 43x17x7mm and weighing only 11 grams, this UBEC fits easily into tight spaces in modern RC chassis designs without adding significant weight or bulk to your model.
  • ESC compatibility — Designed to work with different brands of electronic speed controllers, this UBEC integrates smoothly into any RC car UK setup regardless of which ESC manufacturer you prefer.

Technical Performance

The Hobbywing UBEC 3A 6S is engineered using switching mode DC-DC conversion technology, which represents the gold standard in RC power regulation. This approach delivers superior efficiency compared to linear regulators, particularly important when drawing sustained current from your LiPo batteries during extended running sessions. The unit's ability to accept input voltages from 5.5V all the way to 26V makes it genuinely universal across the RC hobby — whether you're powering a 2S micro brushless RC car or a 6S high-voltage racing vehicle, this regulator adapts seamlessly. The 3-amp output current rating provides sufficient headroom for typical receiver servo loads whilst maintaining voltage stability even during rapid servo movements or multiple simultaneous control inputs. The extremely low ripple specification (less than 50mVp-p at 2A with 12V input) is particularly impressive and ensures your radio receiver maintains perfect fidelity, critical for maintaining precise control in competitive or challenging driving situations. The dual-voltage capability via jumper selection means a single UBEC can serve different receiver types — older 5V systems or newer 6V specifications — eliminating inventory management issues. Build quality is evidenced by the compact aluminium construction and professional-grade components throughout, delivering years of reliable service in both mild UK weather conditions and heated competition environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a UBEC and why do I need one for my RC car? — A UBEC (Ultimate BEC) is a voltage regulator that steps down the high voltage from your main LiPo battery to the safe 5V or 6V level required by your receiver and servos. Without a UBEC, your receiver would receive the full battery voltage (potentially 22+ volts on a 6S pack), which would instantly destroy the sensitive electronics. Even with an ESC that has an integrated BEC, using a dedicated external UBEC like the Hobbywing provides cleaner, more stable voltage and protects your expensive receiver equipment.
  • Can I use this UBEC with any battery type? — Yes. The Hobbywing UBEC 3A 6S accepts input from 5.5V to 26V, which covers 2-6S LiPo batteries, 5-18 cell NiMH batteries and NiCa batteries. This universal compatibility makes it an excellent choice if you run multiple RC vehicles with different battery types — one UBEC can work across your entire fleet.
  • What's the difference between 5V and 6V output and how do I choose? — Modern receivers typically operate at 6V, whilst older equipment often used 5V. Check your receiver's specification to determine which voltage you need. The beauty of this Hobbywing UBEC is you can switch between both options simply by moving the jumper cap, making it adaptable to different receivers without purchasing separate units.
  • Is 3 amps enough current for my receiver and servos? — For the vast majority of RC hobbyists, 3 amps is more than sufficient. A typical receiver draws 50-100mA, and each standard servo draws 300-500mA when moving under load. Even with multiple high-torque servos operating simultaneously, you'd rarely exceed 1.5 amps total current draw. The 3-amp capability provides excellent safety margin and headroom.
  • What does the ripple specification mean and why is it important? — Ripple is the small AC voltage variation that remains in the supposedly steady DC output. The Hobbywing UBEC 3A 6S produces less than 50mVp-p ripple, which means the voltage stays incredibly clean and stable. This is crucial because any ripple can introduce noise into your receiver's radio signal processing, potentially causing glitches during critical control moments. Lower ripple equals more reliable performance.
  • Can I install this myself, or do I need a professional? — Installing a UBEC requires basic soldering skills to connect the input wires to your battery and output wires to your receiver. If you're comfortable with a soldering iron, this is a straightforward DIY installation. If not, most RC specialist shops in the UK can install it quickly and affordably. The compact size means it mounts easily to any chassis.
  • How does this compare to my ESC's built-in BEC? — Many ESCs include an internal BEC, but external BECs like this Hobbywing unit provide several advantages: dedicated power supply means cleaner voltage, higher current capacity prevents voltage sag under servo load, and it protects your ESC from being overloaded by servo demands. Many RC competitors specifically use external BECs even with ESCs that have integrated ones.
