Technical Performance

The Hobbywing EZRUN MAX5 HV G2 represents a significant engineering achievement in 1/5th scale RC electronic speed control. This brushless ESC is engineered with premium components and cutting-edge circuitry to deliver unmatched reliability and performance for serious RC enthusiasts. The controller measures 94.5mm in length, 59.4mm in width and 50.9mm in depth, weighing 428.5g with included input wires, making it compact enough to fit in most 1/5th scale RC vehicle chassis whilst maintaining robust construction. The ESC accepts input power through 8.0mm female bullet connectors and provides black 8AWG 200mm power wires and red 8AWG 200mm power wires as standard, with additional spare wire sets included for flexibility in installation. The continuous current rating of 250 amps and peak burst capability of 1600 amps positions this as one of the most powerful ESC options available for 1/5th scale RC vehicles, suitable for use with the latest high-KV brushless motors and demanding applications. The integrated framed fan cooling system operates across the 5-8.4V range powered by the internal BEC, providing active thermal management during high-performance driving. Compatibility with Hobbywing's EZRUN series motors ensures optimised performance when components are matched correctly, whilst the ESC also supports a wide range of third-party sensored brushless motors with standard sensor interfaces. The IP-67 waterproof rating means the entire power system can be deployed on muddy, sandy, wet or snowy terrain without compromise to safety or performance, though Hobbywing notes that this protection represents splash and dust resistance under normal use rather than permanent submersion capability. The solid construction and sophisticated firmware combine to create a brushless RC ESC that can handle the most aggressive racing, bashing and competitive applications across the UK and internationally.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the maximum battery voltage the Hobbywing MAX5 HV G2 can handle? — This brushless ESC supports up to 12S LiPo battery configurations, which represents 44.4 volts maximum. The HV (high voltage) designation indicates this controller is specifically engineered for maximum voltage operation, making it ideal for modern high-performance RC setups that demand extreme power delivery for 1/5th scale vehicles.
  • Is the Hobbywing MAX5 HV G2 suitable for beginners or only experienced racers? — Whilst this is a professional-grade brushless ESC designed for serious enthusiasts and competitive racers, the intuitive SET button programming and optional LCD Program Box make configuration accessible to users with moderate RC experience. However, beginners may benefit from starting with a less powerful ESC option, as the MAX5 HV G2's extreme output requires respect and understanding of safe power management practices.
  • What makes the intelligent freewheeling technology important? — This advanced feature actively reduces heat generation during operation by optimising current flow and minimising resistance losses. Lower operating temperatures directly translate to better performance reliability during long driving sessions, reduced risk of thermal shutdown, and extended lifespan of the ESC components, meaning better value over the life of your RC vehicle.
  • Can I use the MAX5 HV G2 with non-Hobbywing motors? — Yes, the ESC supports any sensored brushless motor with compatible standard sensor interfaces, though certain advanced features like turbo timing adjustment and motor overheat protection are exclusive to Hobbywing EZRUN 56118 G2 motors. Third-party motor compatibility is supported, but you'll achieve optimal performance by pairing this ESC with its designated matching motor.
  • What is the difference between continuous current and peak current rating? — The continuous rating of 250 amps represents the sustained current the ESC can handle indefinitely without thermal stress, whilst the 1600 amp peak rating represents brief burst capability during maximum acceleration. For most driving situations, the continuous rating determines practical performance; the peak rating provides headroom for extreme transient demands like violent launches.
  • How does the IP-67 waterproof rating protect my ESC? — IP-67 certification means the ESC resists dust ingress and brief water immersion, allowing operation in wet, muddy and sandy conditions typical of UK outdoor RC racing. However, this is not a permanent rating and degrades with age; Hobbywing specifically advises against prolonged soaking in water to maintain protection integrity over time.
  • What programming options are available for the MAX5 HV G2? — You can adjust settings using the integrated SET button on the ESC itself for basic configurations, or connect an optional LCD Program Box Pro for detailed parameter adjustment and monitoring. For advanced users, the separate program port supports various Hobbywing programming accessories, and the firmware can be updated to access the latest features and optimisations.
  • Why does the ESC include two different power wire gauge sizes? — The standard configuration includes 8AWG wires sufficient for most applications, with spare 8AWG red and 10AWG black wires provided for flexibility in installation preferences. Different wire gauges allow customisation based on your specific motor connector type, battery configuration and installation constraints in your particular RC vehicle.
  • Does the real-time data logging feature require additional purchase? — The basic ESC includes data recording capability that can be accessed via LCD Program Box, but real-time smartphone monitoring requires purchasing a separate OTA Bluetooth module (Hobbywing product number 30850400). This optional module provides wireless connectivity within approximately 5 metres in open field conditions for live telemetry viewing and analysis.
