Overview

The Hobbywing SkyWalker 20A V2 is a professional-grade brushless speed controller specifically engineered for RC fixed-wing aircraft and aeroplanes. This cost-effective ESC combines exceptional reliability with advanced performance features, making it an ideal choice for RC plane hobbyists, professionals, and anyone looking for a dependable electronic speed controller for their brushless RC aircraft. Whether you're flying a lightweight trainer, an intermediate aerobatic model, or a larger touring aircraft, the SkyWalker 20A V2 delivers the stability, precision and durability that RC aeroplane enthusiasts demand from their equipment.

At the heart of this advanced controller lies a high-performance 32-bit ARM M0 processor running at up to 96MHz, capable of supporting motor speeds up to 300,000 RPM on 2-pole motors. The SkyWalker 20A V2 is designed with both durability and performance in mind, offering RC plane pilots the confidence that comes from proven reliability and cutting-edge engineering. With its compact dimensions of just 45x23x8mm and lightweight construction at only 19 grams, this ESC integrates seamlessly into tight fuselage spaces without compromising on power or functionality. The V2 generation brings enhanced capabilities and improved efficiency compared to its predecessor, whilst maintaining the same affordable pricing that made the original SkyWalker series so popular amongst UK RC aeroplane builders.

Hobbywing's commitment to quality assurance ensures that every unit undergoes strict testing to guarantee maximum safety and reliability. The SkyWalker series is particularly suited to RTF (Ready-To-Fly) models and beginners who are assembling their first brushless RC aeroplane, but its advanced programmable features and robust construction also appeal to experienced pilots and competition flyers who refuse to compromise on quality or performance.

Key Features

  • DEO Technology (Driving Efficiency Optimization) — This exclusive Hobbywing technology optimises driving efficiency throughout the flight envelope, delivering fast and smooth throttle response that gives pilots precise control in all flight phases. The improved efficiency means longer flight times and reduced ESC operating temperatures, allowing you to fly longer whilst maintaining reliable, cool-running operation even during extended sorties.
  • 32-bit ARM M0 Processor at 96MHz — The advanced microprocessor running at 96 megahertz ensures responsive, accurate control of your brushless motor with support for speeds up to 300,000 RPM on 2-pole motors, delivering the performance needed for aerobatic flying and high-speed cruising without lag or hesitation.
  • Programmable Reverse Brake Modes — The SkyWalker 20A V2 features Reverse Brake and Linear Reverse Brake modes that simulate the authentic feeling of landing a real aircraft, allowing you to reduce landing distances and improve your approach control. Normal Brake Mode and Brake Disabled mode are also available, with fully adjustable brake force that you can tune to your specific aircraft and flying style through the programming options.
  • Built-in Search Mode — This exclusive feature helps you locate a missing RC aeroplane by generating distinctive motor signals that act as an audio beacon. The search mode also includes an automatic battery disconnect function that prevents your LiPo battery from being damaged through over-discharge if your model has been idle for a pre-set time period, protecting your valuable battery investment.
  • Multiple Protection Systems — Comprehensive protection functions safeguard your equipment against abnormal input voltage, thermal overload, throttle signal loss, and low voltage cutoff. These intelligent safeguards extend the service life of your ESC and provide peace of mind knowing your investment is protected against common operational hazards.
  • Fully Programmable Parameters — Configure every aspect of the controller's behaviour through either the Hobbywing LED Program Box or your transmitter, allowing you to set brake type, brake force, cut-off voltage, LiPo cell count, startup modes, timing and active freewheeling to match your exact aircraft requirements and flying preferences.
  • Active Freewheeling — This advanced feature reduces drag and improves glide characteristics by allowing the propeller to freewheel when the motor is not being driven, enhancing efficiency and flight duration on your RC aeroplane.

Technical Performance

The SkyWalker 20A V2 is engineered with precision and durability at its core, utilising quality components throughout its compact 45x23x8mm aluminium housing. The continuous current rating of 20 amps with a peak current capacity of 40 amps (available for up to 10 seconds) makes this ESC suitable for a wide range of brushless motors commonly used in RC fixed-wing aeroplanes. The linear-mode BEC (Battery Elimination Circuit) provides a stable 5-volt output at 3 amps, sufficient to power standard RC aeroplane servos and receivers without requiring a separate battery pack. Voltage compatibility spans from 2S to 3S LiPo batteries (7.4 to 11.1 volts nominal), covering the most popular battery configurations for RC aeroplane flying. The 32-bit processor at 96MHz ensures rapid signal processing and motor control response, whilst DEO technology minimises heat generation and maximises efficiency throughout the operating range. This engineering excellence translates to reduced controller temperature under load, extended flight times from your battery pack, and consistent performance across varying atmospheric conditions and altitude changes. Whether you're flying a lightweight trainer at low power settings or pushing a performance aerobatic aircraft near maximum throttle, the SkyWalker 20A V2 delivers reliable, precise motor control with the heating characteristics of a much larger ESC.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Hobbywing SkyWalker 20A V2 suitable for RC aeroplane beginners? — Yes, absolutely. The SkyWalker series was specifically designed with RTF (Ready-To-Fly) models and beginners in mind. The intuitive programmable parameters can be easily configured using either a Hobbywing LED Program Box or your transmitter, and the robust protection systems mean you can fly with confidence whilst learning. The automatic low voltage cutoff protects your battery from damage, and the thermal protection ensures the ESC won't overheat during extended flights or aggressive flying.
  • What battery does the SkyWalker 20A V2 require? — This ESC is compatible with 2S and 3S LiPo batteries (7.4 to 11.1 volts nominal). Most RC aeroplane flyers use 2S batteries for trainer aircraft and lightweight models, whilst 3S batteries are common in higher-performance aeroplanes. A 2200-3200mAh capacity is typically recommended for balanced flight times and weight, though this varies depending on your specific aircraft and motor combination.
  • Can I use the SkyWalker 20A V2 in a large RC aeroplane? — The 20-amp continuous current rating suits motors up to approximately 500-600 watts, which covers the majority of RC fixed-wing aeroplanes. For larger professional models or very high-performance aircraft, Hobbywing offers the SkyWalker 30A V2 as an upgrade option. Check your motor's power requirements and winding specifications to ensure compatibility.
  • What makes DEO technology different from other brushless ESCs? — DEO (Driving Efficiency Optimization) is Hobbywing's exclusive technology that improves driving efficiency, resulting in faster and smoother throttle response, better flight stability and flexibility, and significantly reduced controller temperatures. This means longer flight times from your battery pack and more reliable performance throughout your flying session without the ESC heating up excessively during demanding manoeuvres.
  • How do I program the SkyWalker 20A V2? — You have two options for programming: use the optional Hobbywing LED Program Box (model HW30501003) for detailed configuration without a transmitter, or programme directly through your transmitter using standard ESC programming menus. Either method allows you to adjust brake type and force, cut-off voltage, LiPo cell settings, startup mode, timing, active freewheeling and other parameters to suit your aircraft.
  • What is the Search Mode used for? — The built-in Search Mode generates distinct motor signals that act as an audio beacon to help you locate a missing RC aeroplane in long grass or undergrowth. Additionally, this mode can automatically disconnect your battery after a pre-set period of inactivity, preventing valuable LiPo batteries from being damaged through deep discharge whilst your model is idle.
