Axial 1/10 SCX10 III 4WD Rock Crawler Builder's Kit Overview

The SCX10 has long been the RC platform of choice for scale trail enthusiasts. The Axial 1/10 SCX10 III Builder's Kit 4x4 Rock Crawler takes that proven foundation and adds the latest performance upgrades found on current Axial Ready-to-Run products. This is your starting point for building a rig that won't look like anyone else on the trail.

Kit building is a hobby perfectly suited for Axial enthusiasts, many of whom are passionate about tinkering with and modifying their rigs. There's no better starting point for your custom build than the SCX10 III Builder's Kit. It's a classic crawling platform carrying a wealth of proven Axial quality and innovation.

The Builder's Kit advantages go well beyond the satisfaction of putting together your own rig. The assembly process turns you into an expert on its engineering and a pro at maintenance and repairs. Most importantly, you're able to express your individuality by choosing a body style you like and finishing it however you wish. By adding your personal preference in tyres, wheels, body, and electronics, you create a custom crawler inside and out. Compared to buying an RTR rig that comes fully equipped, the kit ensures you won't pay for anything you won't use.

RC crawling segment is shifting toward more performance. Performance means lower centre of gravity, strategic weight distribution, and other key elements that lead to a more capable rig in all conditions. The Builder's Kit delivers these upgrades.

The new performance shock towers give you multiple mounting options to tune and optimize your suspension. Mount your shocks vertical for a linear feel or angle them for a progressive feel and lower centre of gravity. Going hand in hand with the shock towers, the metal panhard mount is built for durability. It handles the majority of side load in the 3-link front suspension and is designed to work with both straight and portal axles, keeping your suspension triangulated under stress.

Three modular battery trays accommodate 88mm, 100mm, and 112mm length batteries. Each tray accepts battery widths from 35-47mm. All three rubber elastomer hold-downs are included, giving you flexibility for most battery styles in the market.

Boat-Side Sliders feature smooth bottoms to help you slide across rocks. They include screw openings for side-mounted battery trays (AXI231008, sold separately) and two slots for velcro straps if you prefer a lightweight setup with a small pack.

The transmission can be externally locked in standard 4WD, but it also has an optional, servo-actuated DIG feature. The DIG feature lets drivers lock the rear wheels for sharper turns, faster pivots, and better control on difficult terrain. Robust 6mm high-clearance stainless steel links with upgraded rod ends are included, as well as Standard AR45 straight axles. If you prefer portal axles, the LCXU transmission makes it easy to switch with a single gear change.

The kit includes eleven universal body mounts, giving you all the options needed to properly mount whichever body you choose.

The Axial 1/10 SCX10 III Builder's Kit 4x4 Rock Crawler gives you the perfect foundation for your next build-the proven single-piece SCX10 III steel C-channel chassis, an optimized suspension and steering, and a trail-tough drivetrain. When you add your choice of body, tyres, wheels, and electronics, it's a rig you can truly call your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the SCX10 III Builder's Kit suitable for beginners to RC crawling? — The SCX10 III represents a Skill Level 3 kit, making it ideally suited for builders with some RC experience or those willing to invest time in learning. The assembly process (10-15 hours) is thoroughly documented with instruction manuals and exploded view diagrams. However, if you've never built an RC kit before, you might find it more accessible to start with a simpler platform first, then tackle this as your second or third build project. The real advantage comes when you understand RC mechanics well enough to appreciate the tuning options this kit provides.
  • What's the difference between this Builder's Kit and a Ready-to-Run SCX10 III model? — The fundamental difference is that builder's kits include only the chassis, suspension, drivetrain and structural components, requiring you to source and install the electronics (motor, ESC, servo), wheels, tyres, body and transmitter. Ready-to-run models come fully assembled and ready to drive. The kit approach means you won't pay for electronics you don't want, and you gain the satisfaction of building your own rig plus the ability to select every component. You'll also become an expert on the vehicle's engineering through the assembly process, making maintenance and repairs far easier.
  • What battery does the SCX10 III Builder's Kit require? — The kit is compatible with 2S or 3S LiPo batteries with either EC3 or IC3 connectors. You have flexibility in choosing battery capacity based on your needs: high-capacity packs for endurance trail runs where longer runtime is essential, or lighter, compact packs for competitive crawling where weight reduction is the priority. Three modular battery trays (88mm, 100mm and 112mm length options) accommodate different battery sizes and shapes.
  • Can I convert this to use portal axles instead of straight axles? — Yes, absolutely. The kit includes standard AR45 straight axles, but the LCXU transmission design makes switching to portal axles incredibly straightforward — you only need to perform a single gear change. The adjustable metal panhard mount positions forward or backward to accommodate either configuration, providing complete flexibility for your build preferences.
  • What does the DIG feature do, and do I need it? — DIG (Disconnecting Interaxle Gear) is optional and allows the rear wheels to be locked for sharper turns, faster pivots and better control on difficult terrain. It requires an additional servo (sold separately) and the optional DIG conversion kit. For technical trail crawling and competitive use, many builders appreciate the enhanced control; for casual recreational crawling, standard 4WD operation is perfectly adequate. The choice is entirely yours based on your specific needs.
  • What skill level is required for assembly? — This is classed as a Skill Level 3 kit, indicating intermediate builder experience. Assembly typically takes 10-15 hours and requires basic tools, mechanical knowledge and patience. The comprehensive instruction manual and exploded view diagrams guide you through each step. Many builders find the assembly process educational and rewarding, gaining deep understanding of how the vehicle works and how to maintain it afterwards.
  • How does this compare to other 1/10 scale rock crawlers available in the UK? — The SCX10 III line is the most established and proven platform in the rock crawling market, trusted by scale trail enthusiasts for over a decade. The Builder's Kit specifically includes modern performance upgrades found on current Axial Ready-to-Run products: performance shock towers with multiple tuning options, metal panhard mount, modular battery trays and boat-side sliders. These features represent substantial engineering improvements over older platforms, delivering lower centre of gravity, better weight distribution and more tuning flexibility — all critical for serious rock crawling performance.
