Overview
The FTX Outback Hi-Rock Front Universal Driveshafts (FTX9215) are essential replacement and upgrade components for enthusiasts running the FTX Outback Hi-Rock 4x4 trail rock crawler. These telescopic universal driveshafts represent a crucial part of the Hi-Rock's innovative drivetrain design, which has been engineered to deliver superior performance across challenging terrain. Whether you're a seasoned RC crawler enthusiast in the UK or someone discovering the world of trail crawling for the first time, having quality replacement driveshafts on hand ensures your rock crawler stays on the trail and performing at its best.
The FTX Outback Hi-Rock has gained recognition amongst the UK RC community for its exceptional balance of scale realism and trail-conquering capability. The front universal driveshafts play a pivotal role in this performance equation, transmitting power from the split transmission system to the front axle with precision and reliability. These components are specifically designed to work seamlessly with the Hi-Rock's advanced drivetrain architecture, which positions the motor directly above the front axle for optimal weight distribution and climbing performance.
For RC car enthusiasts looking to maintain their Hi-Rock or those building a spare parts collection, the FTX9215 front universal driveshafts are a worthwhile investment. They're designed with durability in mind to withstand the rigours of technical trail work, rocky terrain negotiation, and the occasional lock-up situation that crawler pilots inevitably encounter. At £18.99, these are an affordable way to keep your FTX Outback Hi-Rock ready to run whenever adventure calls.
Key Features
- Telescopic Design — The telescopic construction allows the driveshafts to extend and compress dynamically as the suspension articulates, ensuring consistent power delivery through varying suspension positions and preventing binding during extreme articulation events that are common in technical trail work.
- Universal Joint Construction — Universal joints at each end of the driveshaft allow power transmission across angles, essential for maintaining traction when the front axle tilts and moves independently during rock crawling and uneven terrain navigation.
- Front-Specific Engineering — These driveshafts are specifically engineered for front axle application on the Hi-Rock platform, ensuring perfect fitment and optimal performance characteristics tailored to the weight distribution and handling characteristics of that location.
- Slipper Clutch Compatible — The driveshafts work in conjunction with the Hi-Rock's adjustable drivetrain slipper clutch system, which protects the transmission and driveshafts in the event of a lock-up, extending component lifespan and improving overall drivetrain reliability.
- Precision-Manufactured — Built to the exacting standards FTX is known for, these driveshafts ensure smooth power delivery and minimal vibration, contributing to better handling characteristics and improved control during technical manoeuvres.
- OEM Replacement Parts — As official FTX components, these driveshafts are the exact same specification fitted to new Hi-Rock models, guaranteeing compatibility and performance characteristics identical to the original equipment.
Technical Performance
The FTX Outback Hi-Rock Front Universal Driveshafts represent the pinnacle of component engineering for intermediate-scale trail crawling. These telescopic driveshafts are manufactured to deliver reliable power transmission in the demanding environment of rock crawling, where extreme suspension articulation and challenging terrain are constants. The split transmission system unique to the Hi-Rock platform requires driveshafts that can accommodate significant vertical travel whilst maintaining constant velocity power delivery. The front-mounted motor configuration, positioned directly above the front axle, creates a weight bias that improves climbing performance but also places specific stress loads on the front driveshafts. The universal joint design ensures that power is transmitted smoothly even when the front axle is articulated at extreme angles—something that happens frequently when crawling over rocks and obstacles. The telescopic nature of these components means they extend and retract with suspension movement, preventing the over-extension or under-extension that would cause drivetrain binding or loss of traction. When combined with the Hi-Rock's adjustable slipper clutch, which can be tuned to protect against lock-ups, these driveshafts deliver years of reliable service. The engineering behind these components reflects FTX's commitment to delivering ready-to-run RC crawlers that don't compromise on performance or durability. Built from robust materials proven in thousands of hours of trail testing, the FTX9215 driveshafts are the kind of component that keeps your rock crawler performing consistently, whether you're crawling local woodland trails or tackling more challenging technical sections.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between front and rear driveshafts on the FTX Outback Hi-Rock? — The Hi-Rock features both front and rear driveshafts specifically engineered for their respective locations. Front driveshafts (FTX9215) are engineered to handle the specific loading and articulation characteristics of the front axle when the motor is mounted above it. Rear driveshafts are optimised for the different suspension geometry and load distribution at the rear. Using the correct specification for each location ensures optimal performance and longevity.
- Are these driveshafts waterproof? — Yes, the FTX Outback Hi-Rock is designed as a waterproof trail crawler, and these driveshafts are engineered to be water-resistant. However, after water fording or wet trail sessions, it's good practice to allow components to dry thoroughly before extended storage to prevent corrosion of the internal universal joint components.
- Can I use these on other FTX models? — These driveshafts are specifically engineered for the FTX Outback Hi-Rock platform and are not compatible with other FTX models, as each model has unique suspension geometry, transmission layout, and axle design. Always check your manual or contact a FTX specialist to confirm correct parts for your specific model.
- What maintenance do these driveshafts require? — Like all drivetrain components, the driveshafts benefit from inspection after particularly muddy or sandy sessions. Check that all grub nuts securing the driveshaft ends remain tight, as some users report they can gradually loosen during extended use. Applying threadlock to these fasteners before installation is recommended to prevent any loss of torque.
- How often do I need to replace these driveshafts? — With proper maintenance and correct slipper clutch tuning, these driveshafts are designed for thousands of hours of reliable service. Replacement is typically only needed if you experience a major crash or structural damage to the shafts or universal joints themselves. Regular inspection will alert you to any wear.
- What is the benefit of the telescopic design? — The telescopic design accommodates the full range of suspension articulation without binding or creating dead spots in power delivery. This is crucial for trail crawling where suspension travel is maximal. The design ensures consistent traction throughout the suspension range, which is essential for maintaining grip when navigating rocky, technical terrain.
