Overview
The FTX Utah 2.0 15T Metal Portal Axle Gear (FTX11581) is a premium replacement component designed specifically for the FTX Utah 2.0 rock crawler and compatible FTX models. This metal portal axle gear represents a significant upgrade over standard plastic alternatives, offering enhanced durability and performance for serious RC enthusiasts in the UK who demand reliability from their crawlers. Whether you're tackling challenging terrain in your local countryside or competing in organised RC events, this component ensures your vehicle maintains optimal drivetrain performance when it matters most.
Portal axle gears are critical drivetrain components that transmit power from the motor to the wheels while managing torque and rotational forces. The 15-tooth configuration on this unit is precision-engineered to deliver the right balance of speed and pulling power for rock crawling applications. RC car UK enthusiasts will appreciate that upgrading to metal gears from plastic originals significantly extends component lifespan, reduces maintenance frequency, and improves overall vehicle reliability during extended crawling sessions.
Built to exacting standards by FTX, a brand recognised throughout the UK RC community for quality and innovation, this metal portal axle gear is an essential upgrade for anyone serious about maximising their Utah 2.0's potential. The metal construction provides superior wear resistance compared to plastic alternatives, ensuring that your investment in your RC crawler continues to deliver performance season after season.
Key Features
- Metal Construction — Manufactured from durable metal rather than plastic, this portal axle gear resists wear and deformation far more effectively than standard components, ensuring consistent performance and dramatically extending the service life of your drivetrain even under extreme crawling conditions.
- 15-Tooth Configuration — The 15T ratio has been specifically chosen for the Utah 2.0 platform to deliver optimal torque delivery and speed characteristics for rock crawling applications, providing the ideal balance for both technical terrain and moderate speed terrain.
- Portal Axle Application — Designed as a portal axle component, this gear manages power transmission in the portal drive system, which is essential for maintaining traction and control when navigating challenging obstacles and steep inclines.
- FTX Utah 2.0 Compatibility — This component is engineered with precise tolerances to fit the FTX Utah 2.0 platform seamlessly, ensuring perfect mesh with mating drivetrain components and maintaining proper gear alignment for smooth operation.
- Premium Material Quality — The metal construction provides superior strength and rigidity compared to plastic alternatives, resisting impact damage and maintaining precise tooth profiles under the demanding stresses of rock crawling.
- Easy Installation — As a direct replacement component, installation is straightforward for anyone with basic RC mechanical knowledge, making this an ideal upgrade for improving your existing Utah 2.0 setup.
- Enhanced Reliability — Upgrading to metal gears significantly reduces the risk of gear stripping and tooth damage, ensuring your crawler remains operational throughout extended terrain sessions without unexpected drivetrain failures.
Technical Performance
The FTX Utah 2.0 15T Metal Portal Axle Gear represents the pinnacle of drivetrain durability for 1/10 scale rock crawlers. Metal gears offer substantially improved performance characteristics compared to standard plastic components across multiple factors. The 15-tooth specification is optimised specifically for the Utah 2.0's platform requirements, delivering the precise torque multiplication and speed reduction necessary for controlled rock crawling. The metal construction resists the deformation and wear that commonly affects plastic gears during extended use, maintaining consistent mesh tolerances and tooth profile geometry throughout the component's service life. When paired with your Utah 2.0's electric drivetrain and transmission system, this metal portal axle gear ensures that motor power is transmitted efficiently and reliably to the wheels. UK RC enthusiasts running their crawlers in demanding environments—whether tackling local rock gardens, outdoor event courses, or backyard terrain obstacles—will notice immediate improvements in drivetrain reliability and consistency. The metal-to-metal engagement provides more rigid power transfer compared to plastic alternatives, reducing flex and noise whilst improving feedback and control feel. This component works in harmony with the Utah 2.0's complete drivetrain system to maximise your crawler's capability on technical terrain where precision control and reliable power delivery are essential for success.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this metal portal axle gear compatible with my FTX Utah 2.0? — Yes, the FTX Utah 2.0 15T Metal Portal Axle Gear (FTX11581) is engineered specifically for the FTX Utah 2.0 platform. It is designed as a direct replacement for the original portal axle gear, with precise tolerances that ensure perfect fit and proper mesh alignment with all mating drivetrain components. This makes installation straightforward and ensures optimal performance immediately upon fitting.
- What is the advantage of a metal gear over a plastic one? — Metal gears offer multiple significant advantages over plastic alternatives. They provide superior wear resistance, meaning your gears will maintain their tooth profile and precise dimensions far longer even under heavy use. Metal gears resist deformation and flex under load, providing more rigid and efficient power transmission. They are much less prone to stripping and tooth damage, particularly during high-torque rock crawling scenarios where plastic gears might fail. Finally, metal gears typically require less frequent replacement and maintenance, making them more cost-effective over the long term for serious RC enthusiasts.
- How difficult is it to install this portal axle gear? — Installation difficulty depends on your mechanical experience, but for anyone with basic RC knowledge, fitting this replacement gear is straightforward. It is a direct replacement component that simply fits into the existing portal axle assembly. You will need basic tools and some familiarity with your Utah 2.0's drivetrain layout. If you are unsure, our team at RC Model Shop can advise on installation, or you may wish to visit our Walsall store where our experienced staff can offer hands-on guidance.
- Will this gear improve my Utah 2.0's performance? — This component is not designed to increase speed or change your vehicle's performance characteristics significantly. Rather, it enhances reliability and consistency. By upgrading from a plastic gear to this metal alternative, you will experience improved drivetrain durability, more consistent power delivery, and reduced risk of gear failure during demanding crawling sessions. The benefits manifest as longer intervals between maintenance, fewer unexpected failures, and more reliable terrain performance over extended use.
- What happens if my original gear fails? — If your original plastic portal axle gear fails, your Utah 2.0's drivetrain will not function properly, potentially leaving you stranded during a crawling session. A stripped or broken gear will prevent proper power transmission to the wheels, making the vehicle undriveable. Installing this metal replacement before failure occurs ensures you avoid this scenario entirely, making it a valuable preventative upgrade for serious crawlers.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst this component is not exclusively for experienced users, it is most beneficial for anyone who runs their Utah 2.0 regularly in demanding conditions. Beginners with newly purchased crawlers may not immediately notice the difference between plastic and metal gears, but as you progress and tackle more challenging terrain, the enhanced reliability will become increasingly valuable. Many experienced UK RC enthusiasts recommend upgrading to metal drivetrain components early in a crawler's ownership as a cost-effective way to extend overall lifespan.
- How long will a metal gear last compared to plastic? — Metal gears typically outlast plastic alternatives by a factor of several times under comparable use conditions. Whilst plastic gears might require replacement after dozens of hours of hard use, metal gears can often serve for hundreds of hours whilst maintaining consistent performance. Actual lifespan depends on your terrain selection, driving intensity, and maintenance practices, but metal construction invariably delivers superior longevity.
