This is an essential upgrade or replacement component for anyone running a brushless RC car with a 48 DP gear system and a 3.17mm motor shaft. The pinion gear is the critical link between your brushless motor and your spur gear, directly affecting acceleration, top speed and overall driveline efficiency. A high-quality pinion like this one ensures smooth engagement with your spur gear, reduces noise and vibration during operation, and significantly extends the lifespan of your entire drivetrain. Perfect for 1/10 scale RC cars, buggies, trucks and other vehicles that use 48 DP gearing, the Corally C-71420 represents professional-grade engineering at an excellent value for the RC model shop enthusiast.

Corally has earned recognition in the RC community for manufacturing components that balance affordability with exceptional quality and precision. This pinion gear is no exception—it's manufactured in Europe to the strictest tolerances, ensuring that every tooth is perfectly shaped and every rotation runs true. Whether you need a replacement pinion after extended use, or you're experimenting with different gear ratios to find the perfect balance for your specific track or driving style, the 20-tooth configuration offers a versatile option for medium-aggression gearing setups.

Key Features

  • Special Hardened Steel Construction — This pinion is manufactured from specially formulated hardened steel that resists wear, stripping and deformation even under extreme racing conditions and high-load impacts. Hardened steel gears maintain their tooth profile longer than standard materials, which means your RC car UK investment stays reliable through countless hours of operation and provides better durability compared to softer metals.
  • CNC Cut Teeth with Perfect Concentricity — Every tooth on this pinion is cut using precision CNC machinery, creating perfectly shaped teeth that mesh flawlessly with your spur gear. The exceptional concentricity (trueness) ensures that the pinion runs dead-centre without wobble, eliminating vibration that can damage bearings and degrade performance. This level of precision is what separates quality components from budget alternatives.
  • Ultra-True Running for Vibration-Free Operation — The manufacturing process creates a pinion that rotates with minimal runout, which means vibration-free engagement with your spur gear. This translates directly to smoother acceleration, quieter operation, less stress on your drivetrain components, and improved handling characteristics on the track or bashing terrain.
  • 48 DP Module Standard — This pinion is designed for all vehicles that use the 48 DP (diametral pitch) gear standard, which is one of the most popular gearing sizes for modern 1/10 scale RC cars, buggies and trucks. This universal compatibility means you can confidently order knowing it will fit your existing 48 DP spur gears and motor system.
  • 3.17mm Motor Shaft Compatibility — Engineered specifically for 3.17mm diameter motor shafts, this pinion ensures a secure, precise fit without slop or wobble. The correct shaft diameter is critical for proper gear mesh and longevity, and this specification eliminates guesswork when ordering replacement components.
  • 20 Tooth Configuration — The 20-tooth count provides a balanced gear ratio suitable for most racing and bashing applications. This tooth count is a popular middle ground that delivers good acceleration without sacrificing top speed, making it ideal for varied track conditions and general-purpose driving.
  • Quick Identification Markings — Each pinion is clearly marked with the tooth number (20T in this case), making it incredibly easy to identify and verify you have the correct component. This simple feature saves time during builds, maintenance and gear swaps, especially useful when you're managing multiple RC cars or experimenting with different ratios.
  • Compact Short Design — The short format minimises weight while maintaining structural integrity, contributing to better overall RC car performance and handling. A lighter drivetrain reduces rotational inertia, which can improve acceleration response and reduce strain on your brushless motor and ESC.
  • Made in Europe — Manufactured to European quality standards, this pinion benefits from rigorous quality control and engineering expertise. Supporting European manufacturing ensures consistency and reliability, giving you confidence in every component you purchase for your RC car UK collection.

Technical Performance

The Corally C-71420 represents the intersection of precision engineering and practical RC performance. At just 9mm in length with a 4mm tooth width, this pinion delivers concentrated power transfer without unnecessary bulk. The 48 DP specification is the industry standard for modern 1/10 scale remote control cars, positioning this as the ideal choice for anyone upgrading or maintaining a brushless RC vehicle. The CNC cutting process creates tooth profiles that are mathematically perfect, ensuring optimal load distribution across the gear mesh. When you engage this pinion with your spur gear, the contact patch is maximised, which reduces pressure concentrations that would otherwise cause premature wear or tooth stripping. The hardened steel material has been specifically selected to resist deformation under the enormous stresses that occur during acceleration, top-speed runs and aggressive cornering in RC vehicles. Unlike softer pinions that gradually wear down and develop backlash (loose play), this hardened steel component maintains its tight tolerances throughout its service life. The 1.5mm hex key size for the set screw is a standard fitting that works with all quality RC tools and driver bits, making maintenance and installation straightforward. Whether you're running this as a replacement after thousands of competitive laps, or as a premium upgrade to your current drivetrain, the precision manufacturing and material quality ensure smooth, efficient power delivery to your wheels. For anyone serious about getting the best performance and longevity from their brushless RC car, truck or buggy, this pinion gear is an investment that pays dividends through improved reliability and consistency lap after lap.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why does it matter for my RC car? — A pinion gear is a small gear mounted directly on your brushless motor shaft that drives a much larger spur gear to transfer power to your wheels. The gear ratio between the pinion and spur determines your acceleration and top speed. A quality pinion like this one ensures efficient power transfer with minimal losses, smooth acceleration and longer drivetrain lifespan. Poor quality pinions can strip teeth, create excessive noise and vibration, and waste energy.
  • Will this pinion fit my RC car? — This pinion is designed for any 1/10 scale (or compatible) RC vehicle that uses 48 DP gearing and has a 3.17mm motor shaft diameter. Check your current spur gear specification—if it says 48 DP, and your motor shaft is 3.17mm, then this pinion will fit perfectly. If you're unsure, check your vehicle's manual or contact our expert team at RC Model Shop for confirmation.
  • What's the difference between 48 DP and other gear pitches? — DP (diametral pitch) refers to the gear tooth size and spacing. 48 DP gears have smaller, more closely-spaced teeth compared to 32 DP gears, for example. 48 DP is standard for modern 1/10 scale RC cars and offers a good balance of strength, precision and performance. Different pitches are not interchangeable, so you must match the pitch of your spur gear.
  • Why is hardened steel better than standard steel? — Hardened steel has been heat-treated to increase its hardness and wear resistance significantly. This means pinion teeth maintain their shape and sharpness much longer under the intense stresses of RC driving. Standard or softer steel teeth gradually wear down, developing backlash and eventually stripping. Hardened steel also resists deformation from impact, making it more reliable for aggressive driving styles.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gear? — With proper maintenance and lubrication, a quality hardened steel pinion like this one can last hundreds of hours of driving. You'll know it's time for replacement when you notice noise, vibration, slow acceleration, or visible tooth damage. High-competition drivers may change pinions more frequently to maintain consistent performance, while casual bashers may keep one pinion for years.
  • What is concentricity and why does it matter? — Concentricity refers to how perfectly centred the pinion teeth are around the shaft. Poor concentricity creates runout (wobbling), which causes vibration, noise and uneven gear mesh. This damages both the pinion and your spur gear. The CNC manufacturing process on this Corally pinion ensures exceptional concentricity, so the gear runs dead-true with zero wobble.
  • Is this suitable for competitive racing? — Absolutely. This pinion is manufactured to the same precision standards used in professional RC racing. Competitive drivers appreciate the consistent performance, smooth operation and reliability that this level of quality provides. Whether you're racing regionally or nationally, this pinion will not let you down.
  • Can I use this pinion with any brushless motor? — Any brushless motor with a 3.17mm shaft diameter will work with this pinion. However, your overall gear ratio also depends on your spur gear tooth count. Some motor KV ratings and ESC amperage ratings may be better suited to certain gear ratios, but the pinion itself is compatible with any standard brushless motor of the correct shaft size.
  • What do I need to install this pinion? — Installation is straightforward: remove your old pinion from the motor shaft, slide this new pinion on, and tighten the set screw using a 1.5mm hex key. We recommend applying a small amount of thread-locking compound to the set screw to ensure it doesn't vibrate loose during operation. Always double-check that the pinion sits flush against the motor shaft collar.
