Overview

The Team Associated RC28R FT Aluminium Pinion Gear Set (AS21692) is an essential upgrade and maintenance component for owners of the RC28 and RC28R micro RC cars. This Factory Team pinion set delivers three different gearing options that allow you to fine-tune your micro RC car's performance to suit your driving conditions, whether you're racing competitively or enjoying casual bashing on UK tracks and terrains. As a micro-scale RC platform, the RC28 series has become increasingly popular amongst RC enthusiasts looking for a precision, high-performance alternative to larger RC cars, and having quality replacement and upgrade gears is essential for maintaining peak performance.

The aluminium construction of this pinion gear set ensures durability and lightweight performance, critical factors in the micro RC car segment where every gram counts. Whether you're an experienced RC racer looking to optimise your gearing strategy or an RC hobbyist seeking reliable replacement parts, this Factory Team pinion set from Team Associated — one of the most respected names in RC car manufacturing — provides the quality and precision you need. The inclusion of three tooth count options (15T, 16T, and 17T) in a single purchase means you can experiment with different gearing ratios without needing to source multiple individual gears, making this an economical choice for serious RC enthusiasts in the UK.

The 64DP (64 pitch) specification places this pinion set within the standard micro-scale gearing range, ensuring compatibility with your RC28 or RC28R platform. For anyone using a Team Associated RC28 Team or RC28R Team variant, this genuine Factory Team component is designed to deliver reliable performance and smooth power transmission, helping you achieve consistent lap times and responsive handling on the track or in freestyle driving scenarios.

Key Features

  • Three Gearing Options in One Set — The pinion set includes 15T, 16T, and 17T tooth counts, allowing you to adjust your gear ratio without purchasing individual gears separately. This flexibility enables you to find the optimal gearing for different track conditions, weather, or driving styles, making your RC28 or RC28R more versatile and adaptable to changing requirements.
  • Aluminium Construction — The gears are manufactured from aluminium, a lightweight yet durable material that reduces unsprung mass and improves acceleration and handling response. Aluminium pinions offer an excellent balance between strength and weight, essential considerations in the competitive micro RC car segment where performance margins are tight.
  • 64DP Pitch Specification — The 64 pitch designation ensures these pinions are compatible with the standard drivetrain components of the RC28 and RC28R platforms. This compatibility guarantee means you can install these gears with confidence, knowing they will mesh correctly with your vehicle's spur gear and deliver smooth, efficient power transmission.
  • Factory Team Quality — As part of Team Associated's Factory Team (FT) range, these pinions meet the exacting standards expected by competitive racers and dedicated RC enthusiasts. Factory Team components are engineered for precision, consistency, and reliability, backed by the reputation of one of the world's leading RC manufacturers.
  • Easy Gearing Changes — Swapping pinion gears is a straightforward maintenance task that requires minimal tools and mechanical knowledge. The ability to change your gearing quickly makes it easy to experiment with different ratios between practice sessions or to adapt to changing track conditions during a day of racing.

Technical Performance

The Team Associated RC28R FT Aluminium Pinion Gear Set represents precision engineering optimised for micro-scale RC car performance. The 64DP pitch standard is specifically designed for compact, high-performance micro platforms like the RC28 and RC28R, where tight tolerances and smooth engagement between pinion and spur gear are critical for efficient power delivery. The aluminium material selection reflects the practical demands of micro RC racing: these gears need to be light enough to minimise rotating mass (improving acceleration and deceleration response) whilst remaining strong enough to handle the torque loads typical of brushless micro motors and high-performance ESC setups. The three included tooth counts allow for meaningful performance variation across your driving range. A 15T pinion provides lower gearing (faster top speed but higher current draw and potential overheating under sustained load), the 16T offers a middle ground for balanced performance, and the 17T delivers higher gearing (better torque delivery, longer runtime, lower motor stress). The precision machining typical of Team Associated's Factory Team products ensures that tooth profiles are consistent and properly hardened, reducing wear and maintaining smooth operation over extended use. These are genuine Team Associated components, not aftermarket alternatives, which means material specifications, dimensional accuracy, and quality control meet the standards expected by competitive micro RC racers across the UK and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between the 15T, 16T, and 17T pinion gears included in this set? — The tooth count directly affects your gear ratio and therefore your vehicle's performance characteristics. The 15T pinion provides the lowest gearing, resulting in higher top speed but requiring more motor current and generating more heat during sustained driving. The 16T pinion offers a balanced middle ground suitable for most conditions and driving styles. The 17T pinion delivers the highest gearing, giving you better acceleration and torque delivery whilst reducing motor temperature and extending battery runtime. You can test each option to find the best setup for your specific track, driving style, and weather conditions.
  • Will these pinions fit my RC28 or RC28R? — Yes, these pinions are specifically designed for Team Associated RC28 and RC28R platforms. The 64DP pitch specification matches the standard drivetrain components used in these micro RC cars, ensuring proper mesh and engagement with your spur gear. Simply verify that your vehicle uses a 64 pitch drivetrain system, which is standard for these models.
  • Are these pinions suitable for beginners? — These are genuine Team Associated Factory Team components designed primarily for competitive racing and dedicated hobbyists who understand how to adjust and maintain their RC cars. Whilst beginners can certainly use them, you should have basic knowledge of how gear ratios affect performance and be comfortable performing simple maintenance tasks like pinion removal and installation. If you are new to RC cars, consider starting with a complete ready-to-run RC platform and learning the fundamentals before experimenting with performance modifications.
  • What tools do I need to change the pinion gear? — The source materials do not specify the exact tools required for pinion installation. We recommend checking the assembly manual for your specific RC28 or RC28R model, or contacting our support team at RC Model Shop for detailed guidance on the installation process.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gears? — Pinion wear depends on usage frequency, driving style, terrain, and maintenance practices. Competitive racers may replace gears more frequently than casual bashers. Inspect your pinions regularly for visible wear, tooth damage, or signs of slipping. If you notice performance degradation or visible damage, it's time to install a fresh pinion from this set.
  • Why would I want to change my pinion gear ratio? — Gearing changes allow you to optimise your RC28 or RC28R for different conditions and objectives. Lower gearing (15T) suits high-speed circuits where top speed is the priority. Higher gearing (17T) suits technical tracks with tight corners, providing better acceleration and reduced motor strain. Experimenting with different ratios helps you find the sweet spot for your local track and driving preferences.
