Key Features
- Custom-Made 540 Steel Case with Chrome-Plated Finish — The motor body is constructed from premium steel and finished with a durable chrome plating, which provides superior protection against corrosion and oxidation whilst maintaining a professional appearance. This robust construction ensures the motor can withstand the rigours of outdoor RC driving and regular use without premature degradation.
- Built-In Capacitor for Minimising Glitching — An integrated capacitor helps filter electrical noise and stabilise voltage delivery, resulting in smoother throttle response and reduced servo glitching during acceleration and deceleration. This feature is particularly valuable when driving in challenging terrain or using lower-quality battery connectors, as it provides more consistent performance feedback.
- High-Torque Magnet and Rotor — The motor features enhanced magnetic properties in both the permanent magnets and rotor assembly, delivering superior torque output compared to standard 540 motors. This extra pulling power is essential for rock climbing, hauling heavy scale bodies, and maintaining momentum on steep inclines and technical obstacles.
- Small Footprint at 50 mm Length — At only 50 millimetres in length, this motor maintains a compact profile that fits comfortably in most standard 540-size RC truck and car setups. The reduced footprint simplifies installation and allows for more flexible chassis design without requiring extensive modification or custom mounting brackets.
- Polished Bushings — The motor shaft rides on precision-polished bushings that minimise friction and wear, ensuring smooth rotation and extended motor lifespan. Polished bushings also reduce internal electrical noise and contribute to the motor's overall efficiency and reliability during extended driving sessions.
- Tuned for Rock Climbing and Scale Driving — Every aspect of this motor has been optimised specifically for the demands of crawling and scale driving, where smooth control, consistent torque delivery, and reliability are paramount. This specialised tuning makes it far superior to generic 540 motors when used in these applications.
Technical Performance
The RC4WD 540 Crawler Brushed Motor 27T delivers impressive performance across a remarkably wide voltage range of 2.4 V to 30 V, making it compatible with virtually any lithium polymer or nickel-metal hydride battery pack you might already own. At the standard test voltage of 7.2 V (a 2S LiPo configuration common in RC crawlers), the motor produces no-load performance of 15,000 RPM with a current draw of just 1.2 amperes, demonstrating excellent efficiency. Under rated load conditions at the same 7.2 V specification, the motor maintains 13,600 RPM whilst drawing 5.02 amperes, confirming its ability to deliver sustained torque under realistic driving conditions. The motor body has an outer diameter of 35.5 millimetres and a length of 50 millimetres, with an output shaft measuring 11 millimetres in length and 3.1 millimetres in outer diameter — standard dimensions that ensure compatibility across the widest range of gearbox options. The entire assembly weighs just 158 grams (5.57 ounces), contributing minimal unsprung mass to your build. Operating temperature range extends from -10°C to +60°C, meaning the motor performs reliably whether you're driving in cold winter conditions or hot summer heat. Shaft end play is precisely controlled between 0.1 millimetre and 0.5 millimetre, critical tolerances that maintain smooth operation and prevent binding. The noise output remains below 78 decibels, ensuring your RC driving experience remains enjoyable and won't disturb others nearby. Whether you're running 2S, 3S, or 4S LiPo batteries, or even traditional NiMH packs, this motor will deliver consistent, reliable performance that won't quit when you need it most.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the RC4WD 540 27T motor suitable for complete beginners to RC crawling? — Yes, this motor is an excellent choice for beginners. The brushed design is simpler to understand and maintain than brushless systems, and the smooth throttle response makes it forgiving for drivers still learning vehicle control. The built-in capacitor reduces glitching, which helps newer drivers avoid frustration with unpredictable behaviour. However, you will need to purchase a compatible ESC, battery, and charger separately, so factor those costs into your initial investment.
- What battery does the RC4WD 540 27T motor need? — This motor is incredibly flexible with battery selection, accepting anything from 2.4 V to 30 V. Most RC crawlers and scale trucks use either 2S (7.4 V) or 3S (11.1 V) lithium polymer batteries, both of which work perfectly with this motor. At 7.2 V (which is close to the 2S specification), the motor delivers 15,000 RPM no-load and 13,600 RPM under realistic load, providing excellent torque for climbing and scale driving. Always check that your chosen ESC can handle brushed motors and supports your intended voltage range.
- How does the 27-turn configuration compare to other RC4WD 540 motor options? — RC4WD offers this motor in multiple turn counts ranging from 20T to 80T. The 27T version represents a mid-range option that balances torque with reasonable top-end speed — higher turn counts (35T, 45T, 55T) deliver more torque but lower maximum RPM, whilst lower turn counts (20T) sacrifice some torque for higher top speed. The 27T is particularly well-suited to rock crawling and technical terrain where consistent mid-range torque matters more than outright speed.
- Will this motor fit my RC truck? — The motor is a standard 540-size format with a 50 millimetre length and 35.5 millimetre body diameter, making it compatible with most popular RC trucks and cars that use 540 motors. Popular compatibility includes various RC4WD models, and it will work with many other brands' 540-format chassis. Always verify your specific chassis accepts 540-size motors before purchasing, as some vehicles use alternative formats.
- What makes the chrome-plated steel case better than alternatives? — Chrome plating provides superior corrosion resistance compared to bare steel, which is essential when driving in wet conditions, dusty terrain, or near water. The hard chrome coating also offers better heat dissipation than paint-based finishes, helping the motor maintain consistent performance during extended driving sessions. The professional appearance is an added bonus for those building scale-accurate crawlers.
- Does this brushed motor require special maintenance? — Brushed motors require periodic maintenance compared to brushless alternatives, including occasional brush inspection and commutator cleaning. However, this maintenance is straightforward and forms part of regular RC hobby upkeep. The polished bushings reduce wear, extending the interval between major servicing. Always keep the motor clean and dry when not in use.
