Overview
The MIP 4.0MM Nut Driver Wrench Gen 2 (MIP9801) is an essential tool for any serious RC enthusiast in the UK. Whether you're tuning your RC car, maintaining your latest model, or performing routine adjustments, this precision nut driver delivers the rock-solid construction and tight tolerances that have made MIP the go-to brand for RC maintenance tools for nearly 30 years. The Gen 2 refinement brings modern enhancements to an already legendary tool, combining classic MIP heritage with updated features that improve durability, visibility, and usability in your workshop or at the track.
Designed and manufactured entirely in the USA, the MIP 4.0mm Nut Driver represents the pinnacle of RC tool engineering. It's trusted by World Champions and hobbyists alike around the world, and for good reason – this is the wrench that helps extract screws damaged by inferior tools, making it an invaluable addition to any RC toolkit. The 4.0mm size is particularly versatile for common fasteners found on most modern RC vehicles, making this an ideal choice whether you're running ready-to-run RC cars, race kits, or competition-grade machines.
With its iconic amber-handled design now enhanced with a black oxide coating and laser-etched markings, the Gen 2 version maintains the unmistakable MIP identity whilst offering improved protection against wear and corrosion. The short overall length improves ergonomics and control during use, whilst the thin-wall, deep socket head reaches nuts on long screws and works effectively in tight areas – essential features for accessing fasteners in confined spaces on your RC vehicle.
Key Features
- Black Oxide Coating — The Gen 2 upgrade replaces the previous nickel plating with a durable black oxide finish that provides superior protection against scratches, oxidation, and corrosion, extending the tool's lifespan and keeping it looking and performing like new for longer.
- Laser-Etched Size Markings — Clear, crisp laser-engraved markings display the MIP logo and tool size, making it impossible to miss which size you're grabbing from your toolbox, whilst ensuring the markings won't fade or wear away over time.
- Colour-Coded Identification Ring — A bold colour-coded ring allows quick visual identification of the tool size, speeding up your workflow during maintenance and tuning sessions where you need the right tool fast.
- Deep Socket Head Design — The thin-wall, deep socket configuration is specifically engineered to reach nuts located on long screws and work effectively in tight areas where standard tools simply won't fit, a critical feature for accessing fasteners in confined spaces on modern RC vehicles.
- Optimised Steel Construction — Built from premium steel and hand-assembled in the USA, the tool features optimised construction for maximum durability and long wear characteristics, ensuring it withstands the demands of regular RC maintenance.
- Super-Comfortable Polycarbonate Handle — The ergonomically designed handle is crafted from resilient polycarbonate that maintains its comfort in both hot and cold weather conditions, ensuring you can work on your RC machines regardless of the season or weather outside.
- Short Tool Length — The refined overall length improves ergonomics and control during use, reducing hand fatigue and giving you better precision when tuning critical fasteners on your RC car or truck.
- Hand-Assembled Quality — Every single tool is hand-assembled and manufactured 100% in the USA, reflecting MIP's commitment to uncompromising quality and attention to detail that professional RC enthusiasts demand.
Technical Performance
The MIP 4.0mm Nut Driver Wrench Gen 2 represents the culmination of nearly three decades of precision tool manufacturing for the RC industry. Constructed from premium steel and optimised for durability and long wear characteristics, this tool is engineered to handle the demands of both casual weekend bashers and serious competition drivers. The black oxide coating provides a significant upgrade over traditional nickel plating, delivering enhanced protection against the scratches, corrosion, and general wear and tear that comes from regular use in the RC hobby. The deep socket head design with thin-wall construction allows access to fasteners in spaces where standard tools cannot reach, whilst the laser-etched markings ensure size identification remains clear and legible throughout the tool's lifetime. At 4.0mm, this size addresses one of the most commonly used fastener sizes across modern RC vehicles, from ready-to-run models to competition-grade machines. The polycarbonate handle has been specifically selected for its resilience across temperature extremes, maintaining comfort and grip whether you're working in summer heat or winter cold. Every tool undergoes hand assembly in the USA, ensuring that the tight tolerances and rock-solid construction MIP is renowned for are maintained in each individual unit.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Why is the MIP 4.0mm Nut Driver considered the best in the RC industry? — The MIP 4.0mm Nut Driver has been the #1 tool in the RC industry for almost 30 years, trusted by World Champions and hobbyists worldwide. Its reputation is built on rock-solid construction, precise tolerances, and uncompromising quality. It's specifically designed to extract screws damaged by inferior tools, making it an essential addition to any serious RC toolkit. The Gen 2 version enhances this legacy with improved durability and visibility features.
- What is the difference between the Gen 2 and previous versions? — The Gen 2 upgrade brings several improvements: the black oxide coating replaces nickel plating for better protection against corrosion and scratches; laser-etched size markings provide clear, permanent identification that won't fade; a colour-coded ring offers quick visual size identification; and the refined short tool length improves ergonomics and control. However, the core construction, precise tolerances, and uncompromising quality that define MIP tools remain completely unchanged.
- What makes the 4.0mm size particularly useful for RC cars? — The 4.0mm size is one of the most versatile for common fasteners found on modern RC vehicles, whether you're running ready-to-run models, race kits, or competition machines. This size covers a significant range of tuning and maintenance tasks across most popular RC platforms available in the UK market.
- Is this tool suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. While the MIP 4.0mm Nut Driver is trusted by World Champions and professional competitors, it's equally valuable for beginners learning to maintain their RC cars. The precision tolerances and durable construction mean it won't strip fasteners like inferior tools might, making it an excellent investment for anyone new to the hobby who wants tools they can rely on.
- Why is the deep socket head design important? — The deep socket head with thin-wall construction is specifically engineered to reach nuts located on long screws and access fasteners in tight areas where standard nut drivers cannot reach. This is a critical feature for modern RC vehicle design, where space is often constrained around suspension components, chassis adjustments, and other frequently-tuned areas.
- Will this tool work in extreme weather? — Yes. The polycarbonate handle is specifically designed to remain resilient in both hot and cold weather conditions, maintaining comfort and grip whether you're working on your RC car in summer heat or winter cold. This makes it suitable for year-round RC racing and maintenance in the UK climate.
