Overview
The FTX Outback Mini 64t Main Gear & 12t Pinion Gear Set (FTX8857) is an essential replacement drivetrain component for owners of the FTX Outback Mini 3.0 Ranger 1:24 scale RC crawler. Whether you're an experienced RC enthusiast who regularly maintains and upgrades your fleet, or a dedicated hobbyist looking to keep your beloved RC vehicle in peak condition, this genuine FTX spare part delivers the reliability and compatibility you need. Gears are critical components in any RC car's transmission system, and having quality replacements on hand ensures your vehicle remains race-ready and performs at its best during your outdoor adventures across the UK and beyond.
This gear set comprises two essential components that work together to transfer power from your motor through the drivetrain to the wheels: a 64-tooth main spur gear and a 12-tooth pinion gear. The combination of these two gears creates your vehicle's gear ratio, which directly influences acceleration, top speed, and overall driving characteristics. For the FTX Outback Mini 3.0 Ranger, this specific gear combination has been engineered to deliver balanced performance suitable for both casual bashing and more technical crawling sessions. If you've noticed grinding sounds, slipping, or a loss of power transfer in your Outback Mini, worn or damaged gears are often the culprit, making this replacement set a worthwhile investment.
Available from RC Model Shop, this is a genuine FTX component that guarantees perfect fitment and performance on your 1:24 scale RC crawler. We understand that keeping your RC car in working order is essential whether you're a weekend basher enjoying family fun or a serious hobbyist who demands the best from their equipment. Stock up on this replacement gear set today and ensure you're never sidelined by drivetrain issues during your next RC adventure.
Key Features
- 64-tooth Main Spur Gear — This is the larger gear in the set that meshes with the pinion gear to create the primary speed reduction ratio. The 64-tooth configuration works in conjunction with the 12-tooth pinion to produce a gear ratio of approximately 5.33:1, which is ideal for the FTX Outback Mini 3.0 Ranger's 1:24 scale dimensions and weight. A well-maintained spur gear ensures smooth power delivery and consistent acceleration across various terrain types.
- 12-tooth Pinion Gear — The smaller drive gear that directly connects to the motor shaft, the pinion gear is crucial for transferring motor output to the main spur gear. The 12-tooth design is specifically matched to work with the 64-tooth spur gear, ensuring optimal mesh, minimal backlash, and maximum efficiency. This pairing creates the perfect balance between acceleration and top speed for the Outback Mini platform.
- Genuine FTX Manufacturing — These are official FTX components manufactured to exacting standards, not aftermarket substitutes or generic alternatives. Genuine parts guarantee proper fitment, durability, and performance characteristics that cheap replacements simply cannot match. You're investing in reliability and longevity when you choose OEM parts.
- Drivetrain Spares Category — This product is categorised as a drivetrain spare, making it easy to locate alongside other transmission-related components. If you're rebuilding your entire drivetrain or simply replacing worn gears, having access to genuine OEM components means you can be confident in the quality and compatibility of every part.
- Compatible with FTX Outback Mini 3.0 Ranger Range — This gear set is specifically engineered to fit the FTX Outback Mini 3.0 Ranger 1:24 Ready to Run models across all colour variants including Dark Grey, Dark Red, and Green. Universal compatibility across the range means you don't need to worry about colour-specific variants — one part fits all.
Technical Performance
The FTX Outback Mini 64t Main Gear & 12t Pinion Gear Set represents the heart of your vehicle's transmission system, and understanding how these components work is essential for maintaining peak performance. Gears in RC vehicles are typically manufactured from hardened plastic or composite materials designed to withstand the stresses of acceleration, deceleration, and load bearing across various terrain conditions. The specific tooth counts — 64 on the spur gear and 12 on the pinion — create a gear ratio that balances the motor's output to deliver appropriate torque and speed characteristics for the Outback Mini platform. This 5.33:1 ratio (calculated by dividing 64 by 12) provides sufficient mechanical advantage to deliver strong pulling power whilst maintaining reasonable top speeds suitable for crawling, climbing, and general off-road adventure. The engineering behind these gears ensures they mesh smoothly with minimal backlash, which is the small amount of free movement between meshed gear teeth. Excessive backlash results in a loose, imprecise feel, whilst poor mesh alignment can cause accelerated wear and premature failure. FTX has engineered these components to tight tolerances, meaning when properly installed on your Outback Mini 3.0 Ranger, you'll experience smooth, responsive power delivery. Regular inspection and replacement of worn gears is part of responsible RC vehicle ownership, particularly if you frequently bash your crawler through challenging terrain or run extended sessions. Dirt, moisture, and general wear gradually degrade gear teeth, reducing efficiency and eventually causing slipping or grinding. By keeping replacement gears on hand, you can quickly restore your vehicle to full performance and minimise downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the FTX Outback Mini 64t & 12t Gear Set suitable for beginners? — Whilst this is a replacement spare part rather than a complete vehicle, it is absolutely suitable for beginners who own an FTX Outback Mini 3.0 Ranger. If you're new to RC and have experienced gear damage or wear, replacing the gears yourself is a straightforward maintenance task that teaches valuable mechanical skills. The Outback Mini platform is renowned for being beginner-friendly, and maintaining its drivetrain is an important part of responsible ownership.
- How do I know if my gears need replacing? — Several signs indicate worn or damaged gears: grinding or crunching sounds during acceleration, a noticeable loss of power or responsiveness, visible cracks or missing teeth on the gears themselves, or the motor spinning without transferring power to the wheels (indicating slipped gears). If you notice any of these symptoms on your Outback Mini 3.0 Ranger, this replacement gear set should resolve the problem.
- What is the gear ratio created by the 64t spur and 12t pinion? — The gear ratio is calculated by dividing the number of teeth on the spur gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear: 64 ÷ 12 = approximately 5.33:1. This ratio determines how many times the motor shaft must rotate to complete one full rotation of the wheels. A higher ratio provides more torque for crawling and climbing, whilst a lower ratio favours speed. The 5.33:1 ratio in this set is optimised for the FTX Outback Mini's 1:24 scale and weight, delivering balanced performance.
- Are these gears compatible with other FTX models? — These gears are specifically designed for the FTX Outback Mini 3.0 Ranger 1:24 Ready to Run models in all colour options (Dark Grey, Dark Red, and Green). Whilst FTX produces numerous crawler models across different scales and designs, you should verify compatibility with your specific model before purchasing, as different platforms may use different gear specifications.
- How long do RC gears typically last? — The lifespan of RC gears depends heavily on driving habits, terrain difficulty, maintenance frequency, and environmental conditions. Casual weekend drivers might enjoy hundreds of hours from a single set of gears, whilst aggressive bashers or rock crawlers tackling severe terrain may need replacements more frequently. Regular cleaning and inspection help extend gear life by preventing dirt accumulation and catching damage early.
- Can I upgrade to different gear ratios for different driving styles? — The 64t & 12t combination is engineered specifically for the Outback Mini 3.0 Ranger's performance envelope. If you're interested in experimenting with different gear ratios, FTX may offer alternative gear sets designed for different performance characteristics (more speed versus more torque). However, you should always verify compatibility and consult the manufacturer or experienced retailers before using non-standard gears.
