Overview
The FTX Stinger Motor Pinion Gear Set 23T/29T (FTX10591) is an essential upgrade and replacement component for owners of FTX on-road street cars. Whether you are an experienced RC enthusiast in the UK looking to optimise your brushless RC car's performance, or someone maintaining their existing FTX Stinger, this pinion gear set delivers the precision engineering and reliability that FTX is known for. As a dedicated RC car UK retailer, we understand that having the right spare parts on hand is crucial for keeping your electric RC cars running at their best, and this gear set is a must-have for any FTX Stinger owner.
Pinion gears are a critical component in the drivetrain of any brushless RC car, as they directly transfer power from the motor to the main transmission system. The dual-gear configuration in this set—featuring both 23-tooth and 29-tooth options—gives you flexibility to fine-tune your vehicle's performance characteristics. A smaller pinion gear (23T) will provide higher top speed and acceleration, making it ideal for high-speed street racing, whilst a larger pinion gear (29T) will offer improved torque and control, perfect for tight courses or when you need better handling characteristics. This versatility makes the FTX10591 an invaluable addition to any RC enthusiast's spare parts collection.
The FTX Stinger is renowned as a reliable 1/10 on-road street brushless RTR car, and maintaining its drivetrain components is essential for consistent performance. This pinion gear set is manufactured to the same high standards as the vehicle itself, ensuring perfect fitment and durability through countless laps and high-speed runs. If you are upgrading from standard gearing or replacing worn components on your existing Stinger, this gear set will restore your car's performance to factory specifications or allow you to experiment with different gear ratios to suit your driving style and track conditions.
Key Features
- Dual Gear Configuration — This set includes both 23-tooth and 29-tooth pinion gears, allowing you to experiment with different gear ratios and find the optimal setup for your specific driving style, track layout, and performance goals. Different tooth counts dramatically affect acceleration, top speed, and handling balance, giving you full control over your car's characteristics.
- Precision Engineering — FTX components are manufactured to exacting standards using high-quality materials, ensuring that these pinion gears mesh perfectly with your motor's output shaft and main transmission gear. Precision-cut teeth prevent stripping, grinding, and premature wear, keeping your drivetrain running smoothly for extended periods.
- Direct Motor Power Transfer — As the interface between your brushless motor and transmission, these pinion gears are responsible for converting motor rotations into usable vehicle motion. A well-maintained pinion gear set ensures maximum efficiency and minimal power loss, translating to better acceleration and more responsive handling in your 1/10 on-road street car.
- OEM Quality Replacement — These are genuine FTX components designed specifically for compatibility with FTX Stinger and EVO30 models, guaranteeing perfect fitment and reliability. Using genuine replacement parts is far more cost-effective than attempting repairs with inferior alternatives.
- Versatile Gearing Options — Whether you need high-speed performance for open track running or prefer balanced handling for technical courses, having both 23T and 29T options lets you dial in the perfect setup without purchasing multiple expensive parts.
Technical Performance
The FTX Stinger Motor Pinion Gear Set 23T/29T is engineered for use with brushless motor systems found in FTX's premium on-road street cars. The pinion gear serves as the critical link between the high-speed rotation of a brushless motor (typically running at thousands of RPM) and the wheel speed you actually experience. The 23-tooth configuration delivers a lower gear ratio, ideal when you want maximum top speed and acceleration for straightaway racing and high-speed circuits. Conversely, the 29-tooth gear provides a higher gear ratio that sacrifices some peak speed in favour of improved torque characteristics, better launch control, and more predictable handling through technical corners. In the context of a 1/10 on-road street brushless RTR car, pinion gear selection directly impacts how your ESC (electronic speed controller) manages power delivery and how your vehicle behaves under acceleration and braking. These components are cut from durable materials using precision manufacturing techniques to ensure that teeth engage smoothly with the main transmission gear, minimising friction, vibration, and energy loss. The quality of the pinion gear is absolutely fundamental to the longevity of your motor and transmission system—cheap or worn gears will cause premature wear throughout your entire drivetrain and may even damage expensive motor components.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between the 23T and 29T pinion gears? — The tooth count directly affects your car's gear ratio and performance characteristics. The 23-tooth gear provides a lower ratio for higher top speed and faster acceleration, making it ideal for wide-open tracks and speed runs. The 29-tooth gear delivers a higher ratio that increases torque and improves control, perfect for tight technical courses where precise handling matters more than raw speed. Most drivers keep both on hand to adjust their setup based on track conditions.
- Why would I need to replace my pinion gear? — Over time, the teeth on pinion gears wear down through constant engagement with the main transmission gear, especially if you run your car frequently or at high speeds. Worn teeth cause grinding sounds, lose efficiency, and can eventually strip completely, leaving your car immobilised. Regular inspection and replacement of worn gears is essential maintenance for any dedicated RC enthusiast. Additionally, changing your pinion gear is one of the quickest and most affordable ways to tune your car's performance without major modifications.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — This is a replacement and upgrade component rather than a complete system, so it is aimed at owners who already possess an FTX Stinger or EVO30 car. If you are new to RC cars, we recommend starting with a complete ready-to-run (RTR) package. However, once you own your FTX on-road car, learning to swap and adjust pinion gears is an excellent way to understand how gear ratios affect performance and is well within the capabilities of any beginner.
- How do I know if my pinion gear needs replacing? — Listen for grinding or unusual sounds coming from the motor area during operation. Visual inspection will reveal worn or chipped teeth if you remove the pinion gear. If your car feels sluggish, loses acceleration suddenly, or produces metallic grinding noises, it is time to replace your pinion gear. Having a spare set on hand means you can diagnose drivetrain issues quickly without waiting for parts to arrive.
- What tools do I need to change the pinion gear? — You will need a small hex wrench (typically 1.5mm or 2mm, depending on your motor mount design) to remove the grub screw that holds the pinion gear on the motor shaft. The process takes just a few minutes once you have the right tool. Most RC enthusiasts keep a small toolkit handy for regular maintenance and adjustments.
- Can I use other brand pinion gears on my FTX Stinger? — While some aftermarket gears may physically fit, we strongly recommend using genuine FTX components to ensure perfect compatibility, precision fit, and optimal performance. Cheaper alternatives may have slightly different tooth profiles or material quality, leading to poor meshing, excessive wear, and potential drivetrain damage. Genuine FTX parts are affordable and worth the investment for reliability and peace of mind.
