Frequently Asked Questions
- What is an air speed head and why would I need one in my RC aircraft? — An air speed head is a sensor component that measures the actual airspeed of your RC aircraft as it flies through the air. This data is transmitted back to your transmitter via telemetry, allowing you to monitor aerodynamic performance in real time. Advanced flyers use this information to optimise flight characteristics, diagnose control issues, and improve overall aircraft handling. It's particularly valuable for aerobatic flying, thermal soaring, and understanding how your aircraft behaves under different flight conditions.
- Is this air speed head compatible with my radio system? — The FMS 1100MM PC-21 Air Speed Head is designed to integrate with radio systems supporting telemetry feedback and sensor data transmission. The standard FMS RTF transmitter and receiver pairing is the FS-i4X transmitter with FS-iA6 receiver, which support bidirectional communication and telemetry capabilities. Compatible systems utilising the AFHDS 2A protocol and supporting multi-channel hopping frequency technology across 2.408GHz to 2.475GHz will work with this component. Ensure your chosen radio system supports telemetry data reception before purchasing.
- Can I use this air speed head on different aircraft types? — Yes, this air speed head can be integrated with various PNP (plug-and-play) aircraft platforms and custom-built foam airframes that feature compatible sensor ports and data transmission capabilities. FMS manufactures the Ranger, and other models that support sensor integration. Similar foam aircraft from other manufacturers with equivalent sensor interfaces can also accommodate this component. However, you must ensure your chosen airframe has the physical mounting provision and electrical connectivity required for sensor integration.
- What radio system should I buy to use this air speed head? — For optimal compatibility with FMS aircraft and sensor components, FMS recommends their FS-i4X 6-channel transmitter paired with the FS-iA6 receiver. Alternatively, FlySky systems such as the FS-i6X with IA6B receiver offer AFHDS 2A protocol support and telemetry capability at competitive pricing. These systems feature multi-channel hopping frequency technology, unique ID recognition ensuring secure pairing, and low power consumption that extends flight battery life. Whichever system you choose, verify telemetry data transmission compatibility before purchasing.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — The FMS 1100MM PC-21 Air Speed Head is specialist equipment designed for experienced RC aircraft pilots with intermediate to advanced flying skills. Installing and configuring sensor components requires understanding of RC aircraft systems, telemetry setup, and flight control integration. Beginners should first master basic RC aircraft flight with standard control setups before progressing to sensor-equipped aircraft. This component is better suited to pilots ready to advance their skills and equipment capabilities.
- What battery does this need? — The air speed head itself draws minimal power and does not require a dedicated battery. However, your complete RC aircraft system will require a flight battery suitable to your airframe size and motor type. Modern RC aircraft typically use lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries in 2S, 3S or higher configurations depending on motor specifications and aircraft size. Your transmitter system (such as the FS-i4X) operates on six 1.5V AA batteries providing 6V DC power. Consult your airframe and motor specifications to determine appropriate battery capacity and voltage for your specific setup.
