Technical Performance
The Corally 32 DP Pinion represents a significant step forward in drivetrain engineering for RC cars. The use of special hardened steel provides superior wear resistance compared to standard steel or plastic alternatives, meaning you'll enjoy longer component life and fewer mid-race drivetrain failures. The CNC cutting process ensures that every tooth is identical to its neighbours, eliminating the variation that plagues lower-quality gears and creating a smooth, consistent mesh with your spur gear. This concentricity is critical—even minute run-out can cause vibration that gets transmitted through the chassis, affecting handling and driver control. The hardened steel construction means this pinion can handle the extreme torque outputs of modern brushless systems without tooth stripping, a common failure point on inferior gears. The 6.2mm tooth width provides adequate material for power transmission while maintaining the lightweight design essential for RC performance. The 13mm overall length ensures proper engagement depth with your spur gear, preventing premature wear and maintaining the correct mesh pressure across the entire tooth profile. Whether you're running a high-KV motor for speed events or a low-KV high-torque motor for acceleration racing, this pinion will reliably transmit power. The 5mm shaft diameter is the industry standard for competitive RC cars, ensuring this component will integrate seamlessly into your existing setup or work perfectly as a replacement for a worn pinion that's causing acceleration loss or increased drag.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between 32 DP and other pinion sizes available? — The DP (diametral pitch) rating determines the tooth size and module of the gear. A 32 DP pinion has smaller teeth than a 48 DP gear, which affects the overall gear diameter and the gear ratio when paired with your spur gear. The 32 DP standard is the most common specification for 1/10 and larger scale RC cars, making it the ideal choice for most hobbyists and competitive drivers in the UK RC scene. Other DP ratings like 48 DP are used on smaller or specialist scales, so ensure you match your spur gear's DP rating to this pinion.
- How do I choose between different tooth counts like 14T, 15T, 16T and 17T? — The tooth count directly affects your gear ratio and overall performance characteristics. A 14-tooth pinion like this model provides a lower ratio (more teeth on the pinion means a smaller ratio difference with your spur gear), resulting in quicker acceleration and better torque delivery, making it excellent for tight, technical tracks with many corners. A 17-tooth pinion would provide a higher ratio for faster top-end speed on open, flowing tracks. Most drivers run between 14T and 17T depending on track layout, weather conditions, and motor choice, so owning multiple pinions allows you to dial in the perfect setup.
- Is this pinion compatible with my specific RC car model? — This pinion will work with any 1/10 or larger scale RC car that uses 32 DP gears and accepts a 5mm motor shaft. This includes vehicles from Traxxas, ARRMA, Losi, Team Associated, Kyosho, and numerous other manufacturers. However, always check your car's manual or specifications to confirm it uses 32 DP gears and has a 5mm motor shaft before purchasing, as some specialist scales or budget models use different standards.
- What performance improvement will I see by upgrading to this hardened steel pinion? — If you're replacing a worn plastic or soft steel pinion, you'll immediately notice smoother, quieter acceleration with less vibration transmitted to the chassis. The improved concentricity means better handling consistency, as your car will respond more predictably to throttle inputs. You'll also experience significantly longer pinion life before teeth begin to strip, saving money on replacements in the long term. The reduced friction from the precise tooth profile may also result in fractionally improved runtime on a full charge, though this is less noticeable than the handling improvements.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — With proper maintenance, a hardened steel pinion like this can last for hundreds of racing passes or hours of bashing. Inspect your pinion regularly for signs of tooth wear, chipping, or stripping. If you notice jerky acceleration, a grinding sound, or visible damage to the teeth, it's time for replacement. Always pair a new pinion with a fresh spur gear, as mixing a worn spur with a new pinion (or vice versa) will result in poor mesh and accelerated wear on both gears.
- What is the difference between hardened steel and standard steel pinions? — Hardened steel has been heat-treated to increase its hardness and wear resistance, allowing it to withstand higher loads and resist stripping far better than standard steel. This means longer component life, improved reliability during high-torque runs, and more consistent performance over the pinion's lifespan. For competitive RC racing or frequent bashing, hardened steel is essential; for casual driving, standard steel may suffice, but the cost difference is minimal and the reliability gain is significant.
- Can I use a set screw or is this pinion a friction fit? — This pinion features a 5mm bore for direct installation onto your motor shaft. The security of the fit depends on your motor shaft diameter tolerance and the pinion bore tolerance. Most modern RC motors and quality pinions like this one maintain tight enough tolerances for reliable friction fit, but some drivers prefer to use a small set screw through the pinion into the motor shaft for absolute security. Check whether your motor supports set screw installation before attempting this modification.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst this pinion is manufactured to professional racing standards, it's equally suitable for beginners, as any RC car using 32 DP gears will benefit from improved quality and reliability. The installation process is simple—remove the old pinion from your motor shaft and slide this new one on, securing with the hex key if your motor uses that method. Beginners should ensure they order the correct tooth count and verify 32 DP compatibility with their car before ordering.
- What tools do I need to install this pinion? — You'll need a 2.0mm hex key (allen key) if your motor shaft uses a grub screw to secure the pinion. If your setup relies on friction fit alone, no tools are required—simply slide the pinion onto the motor shaft. You may also want a gear puller tool to remove the old pinion without damaging it, though a carefully applied lever can work in a pinch.
