The hardened steel construction ensures longevity even under demanding racing conditions, whilst the precise manufacturing tolerances guarantee smooth meshing with your spur gear. This is the kind of upgrade component that serious RC hobbyists turn to when they want to optimise their vehicle's performance and improve reliability during competitive events or casual weekend driving sessions.

Key Features

  • Hardened Steel Construction — This pinion gear is manufactured from hardened steel rather than softer materials, which significantly increases its resistance to wear, stripping, and damage during aggressive driving or racing. Steel pinions maintain their tooth profile far longer than plastic alternatives, ensuring consistent performance and longer intervals between replacements, making them the preferred choice for serious RC car UK owners.
  • 48 DP (Diametral Pitch) Standard — The 48DP pitch classification ensures this pinion will mesh correctly with compatible 48DP spur gears, which is increasingly common across modern RC car platforms. This standardised specification means you can confidently use this gear across multiple vehicles that support 48DP gearing, making it a versatile component for collectors and multi-vehicle enthusiasts.
  • 21-Tooth Configuration — With 21 teeth, this pinion offers a well-balanced gear ratio that provides responsive acceleration whilst still allowing for competitive top-end speed. This tooth count is ideal for many RC car applications and represents a popular middle-ground choice within the extensive 48DP range (which spans from 16 to 32 teeth), making it suitable for varied driving conditions and performance preferences.
  • 5mm Shaft Bore — The precisely machined 5mm (ø5mm) bore diameter is engineered to fit securely onto standard 5mm motor shafts found in countless brushless and brushed RC car motors. This standardised bore size ensures broad compatibility with most modern RC car platforms and makes installation straightforward for experienced hobbyists.
  • Short Format Design — The short pinion format is optimised for space-efficient installation within tight motor mounting areas on modern RC chassis, allowing for compact drivetrain layouts without compromising on gear strength or performance characteristics. This design consideration is particularly valuable for vehicles with limited underbody clearance or innovative motor placement configurations.
  • Genuine Team Corally Product — Sourced directly from Team Corally, a respected manufacturer known for precision engineering and quality control, this authentic component carries the assurance of proper specifications and consistent performance. Choosing genuine parts from established manufacturers eliminates the risk of counterfeit or substandard components that could compromise your RC car's reliability.
  • Part of Comprehensive Range — This 21-tooth pinion is one of 16 different tooth-count options available in the same 48DP hardened steel short format, ranging from 16 to 32 teeth. This extensive selection allows you to precisely tune your RC car's gearing to match your vehicle, track conditions, motor characteristics, and driving style, whether you're chasing speed records or seeking improved acceleration for tight technical courses.

Technical Performance

The Corally 48 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 21 Teeth represents the culmination of precision manufacturing and material science specifically applied to RC car drivetrain components. Machined from hardened steel, this pinion gear exhibits exceptional strength and wear resistance that significantly outperforms standard plastic alternatives used in budget or entry-level RC cars. The hardened steel material undergoes specialised heat treatment processes that increase its durability, allowing it to withstand the extreme rotational forces, impacts, and stresses inherent in competitive racing environments or aggressive bashing sessions. The 48 diametral pitch specification ensures compatibility with modern RC platforms that have standardised around this gearing system, whilst the 21-tooth count positions this gear within the sweet spot of the available range for balanced performance characteristics. The precise 5mm bore is manufactured to exacting tolerances, ensuring that the pinion seats securely on your motor shaft without wobble or run-out, critical factors that directly impact meshing accuracy and overall drivetrain efficiency. When properly installed and meshed with a compatible 48DP spur gear, this pinion will deliver smooth power transmission, minimal backlash, and predictable handling characteristics. The short format design is particularly suited to modern brushless RC cars with space-constrained motor bays, allowing designers to optimise chassis layouts without sacrificing gear quality or strength. Whether you're upgrading from plastic pinions or simply replacing a worn component, switching to this hardened steel unit represents a tangible improvement in reliability and longevity that will be noticeable across multiple driving sessions and will reduce your ongoing maintenance requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What vehicles is the Corally 48 DP 21-tooth pinion compatible with? — This pinion is designed to work with any RC car that features a 48DP drivetrain system with a 5mm motor shaft bore. Compatibility spans numerous platforms from various manufacturers that have adopted the 48DP standard. Before purchasing, verify that your specific RC vehicle supports 48DP gearing and features the correct motor shaft diameter. If you're unsure about your vehicle's specifications, our team at RC Model Shop can help you identify compatible components.
  • Why choose hardened steel pinions over plastic alternatives? — Hardened steel pinions offer substantially improved durability, wear resistance, and longevity compared to plastic options. Steel maintains its tooth profile far longer, resists stripping and damage during aggressive driving, and requires less frequent replacement. For serious RC car UK enthusiasts, racers, and anyone who drives frequently, the investment in steel pinions pays dividends through reduced maintenance requirements and more consistent performance over extended use periods.
  • How do I determine if the 21-tooth configuration is right for my RC car? — The 21-tooth pinion offers balanced performance between acceleration and top speed, making it suitable for most driving styles and track conditions. If you prefer more acceleration and lower top speed, consider a pinion with fewer teeth (16-20). If you want higher top speed with slightly reduced low-end punch, look at options with more teeth (22-32). Your motor KV rating, battery voltage, spur gear size, and vehicle weight also influence the ideal gear ratio for your specific application.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst the Corally 48 DP Pinion itself is a straightforward replacement component, pinion installation requires some mechanical skill and appropriate tools like a pinion puller to avoid damaging the component or motor shaft. Experienced RC hobbyists will find installation straightforward, but beginners might appreciate guidance from our RC Model Shop team or consulting vehicle-specific build guides to ensure proper installation and meshing.
  • What is the difference between 48DP and other pinion pitch standards? — Diametral pitch (DP) describes the tooth density of a gear; higher DP numbers indicate smaller, more numerous teeth. 48DP is a relatively fine pitch becoming increasingly standard on modern RC cars, whilst older platforms might use 32DP, 64DP, or other standards. Pinions and spur gears must match in pitch specification to mesh correctly. Using mismatched pitches will result in poor performance and potential drivetrain damage. Always verify your vehicle's specification before purchasing replacement gears.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gear? — Hardened steel pinions like this Corally unit typically last significantly longer than plastic alternatives. Replacement intervals depend on driving intensity, surface conditions, maintenance quality, and meshing accuracy. Racing or aggressive bashing might require replacement every few seasons, whilst casual hobby driving could see several years of service. Regular inspection for visible tooth wear, noise changes, or performance degradation will indicate when replacement is necessary.
  • Can I use this pinion with different spur gear sizes? — Yes, the 48DP pinion can work with various 48DP spur gear sizes, allowing you to adjust overall gear ratio for different performance characteristics. However, both pinion and spur must be 48DP pitch and properly meshed (correct clearance, alignment, and backlash) to function smoothly. Spur gear selection significantly impacts the final drive ratio and vehicle performance, so proper matching is essential.
